25.01.2022 Surgery is only one tool that can solve a specific structural problem. It is rarely the definitive solution. Dont let anyone place a knife in your back until you understand chronic pain. And most important take back control of your own care.

25.01.2022 Pacing... is a mindful way of returning to exercise and participating in meaningful activity using a paced approach. "Pain usually leads to changes in activity levels. You may give up activities as a way to avoid pain. You may find that you push harder, determined the pain wont beat you. Pushing harder can mean you get pain flares, and avoiding activity can also lead to more pain and disability. Using a paced approach gives you a way to break everyday activities and exercise into smaller bits; it means doing little bits often or finding the middle road between not overdoing and not under doing. Pacing is important in pain management because it helps you to stay active, doing the things you care about and want or need to do, and helps you to avoid pain flares. " https://youtu.be/DorpArmOBz0

24.01.2022 A good reminder as we head into slushy drinking weather :-)

23.01.2022 This is an interesting article: "Whether you’ve been through a bad break up or you’re reading a sympathy card, the old saying, time heals everything, gets passed around whenever someone is suffering. While it’s usually said with the best of intentions, that saying can be quite damaging. As a therapist, the notion that time equals medicine is an issue I tackle in my office on a daily basis. Individuals seeking help often say, I shouldn’t still be feeling this bad. It might... be a year after a painful divorce, or two years after the loss of a loved one, their pain is palpable." And I wonder how this relates to the fact that when people feel emotional pain, the same areas of the brain get activated as when people feel physical pain...

17.01.2022 An interesting look at how movement and exercise can stimulate brain activity. After a 20 minute walk there is a noticeable increase in brain activity. These images are taken at the University of Illinois.

15.01.2022 This is a question Im frequently asked: "What's the difference between physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathy". It's a tricky question to answer!... Thankfully ABC News has unpacked the difference between these 3 options.

14.01.2022 "Were told we need pain without the experience, we risk harming our bodies and living short lives. With pain, and for most people, we learn to not go there, dont do that, dont do that AGAIN, and look at that person dont do what theyre doing! Thirst, hunger, fear, delicious tastes and smells, the feelings of belonging, of safety and security, of calm and comfort: all of these are experiences we learn about as we develop greater control over our bodies. Pain is an experience we learn to associate with actual or possible threat to self. Lets take a moment to think about what self-hood means." https://healthskills.wordpress.com//02/20/what-is-pain-for/

14.01.2022 "While these are preliminary findings, if people could reduce the awareness and attention on the pain, then their tolerance could be improved. That suggests with chronic pain, if people can reduce their focus on the pain, the pain they may experience may reduce," Dr. Urquhart said." http://www.theage.com.au//why-ultramarathoners-dont-feel-p

13.01.2022 Be kind to yourself, it's important for your physical health. "Self-compassion was particularly helpful for older people who were in poor physical health"

12.01.2022 "So much of the research on exercise motivation boils down to one question: How do you convince yourself to suck it up and go do something you fundamentally dislike? And then keep doing it, regularly, for the rest of your life? Even dedicated athletes, as a study published last year in the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology found, often spend much of their time on runs thinking about the fact running is really, really hard. Thats, um, not really encouraging news for the rest of us.

12.01.2022 Great clip on how your body processes medicine! NB: when the clip refers to 'pain sensors' just swap this to 'nocioceptors' or 'sensory receptors'. As there is no such thing as 'pain receptors'. :-)

09.01.2022 The current human disconnection from the natural world starts with our disconnection from our own bodies, which we as a culture inherited to a degree that most of us generally dont quite acknowledge the extent of our inability to feel our own bodies. 09.01.2022 Do you crack, or seek health professionals to crack your joints frequently? Frequent cracking should be avoided as it may further stretch the ligaments over time. In hypermobile individuals this is even more imperative than in more stiff individuals. If you are addicted to cracking your joints, isometric strengthening around the joint may be appropriate to create stability and reduce the need to crack. ... https://youtu.be/_ZNENkkf5Uw
