12.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Carnarvon? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's an opportunity to share stor...ies, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie... Carnarvon is located 889 kilometres north of Perth, at the mouth of the Gascoyne River. The Shark Bay world heritage area lies to the south of the town and the Ningaloo Reef to the north. The traditional owners of the region are the Inggarda, Baiyunga, Thalanji, Malgana and Thudgarri people. Long before European settlement the area was known as Kuwinywardu meaning "neck of water". Aboriginal people associating with the Carnarvon area today typically associate as being Yamatji. The area around Carnarvon was settled in 1876 by the Browns and the Brockmans, who travelled from York to Carnarvon with 4,000 sheep. Brockman settled on Boolathana Station and Brown established Brickhouse Station. In 1891 the town of was gazetted, named after Henry Herbert the fourth Earl of Carnarvon, a past Secretary of State for the Colonies. Carnarvon became the first port in Western Australia which loaded livestock on board ships for transport to markets. The One Mile Jetty once boasted an animal race the length of the jetty. In 1966 road train transport commenced, ships stopped calling and the jetty fell into disrepair. Carnarvon was also a whaling port. Today thanks to fertile soils around the Gascoyne River, the area grows about 47,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables per year, including a range of tropical produce such as bananas, pawpaw, mangoes, grapes, tomatoes, avocados and beans. Visitor's to Carnarvon can appreciate the town's history on its heritage trail. It includes the Railway Station Museum which houses the Kimberley Steam Train, brought down from Broome in the 1950’s and the last steam train to operate in the North West. The Shearing Hall of Fame celebrates the golden days of the Gascoyne shearing industry in the 1950s. While the One Mile Jetty Interpretive Centre shares Carnarvon stories about whaling, pastoral farming and livestock, Aboriginal culture and the battle between the HMS Sydney II and German HSK Kormoran’s story off the Carnarvon coast in 1941. Enjoy Western Australian stories? We invite you to follow the State Library of WA on Facebook. We're sharing stories and photographs from the Library's wonderful collection every day! 04.01.2022 Would you say this is mesmerising? We certainly think so! This is the incredible Blowholes along the Quobba coastline just north of Carnarvon, captured by @jo...dienorman Commonly asked question, what is the best time to visit the Blowholes? Well, great question! As you can see from this video, it is best when the tide is surging in for high tide, high swells create incredible ocean spectaculars, though you should be cautious when standing along the coast, as king waves do kill. This incredible natural attraction should be on your bucket list for your next #WanderOutYonder adventure to Carnarvon #CatchYouinCarnarvon
