25.01.2022 Some tips to help you do your laundry in a more environmentally friendlier way to help save the reef.

25.01.2022 Hi Monique here again. We are very excited and privileged to also have International underwater and fashion photographer, @Jellan Merlant-Pilonchery, on board our CoralWatch Volunteer Production team for Operation Eilish, De Niro & Harington. #Jellan has created beautiful images locally and all around the world for the past decade. For us, he captured some wonderful underwater footage of our #CoralWatchers in action off Lady Musgrave Island and conducted behind the scenes i...nterviews with everyone at Coonarr Beach. Like the rest of the crew, Jellan has volunteered his talent without charge for the sake of the reef. Thank you so much Jellan, for joining our watch If you are reading this and want to know how you can help watch out for the reef, in the water or from home, visit www.coralwatch.org, share this post, ‘Like' us on Facebook and invite your friends to like us too! 22.01.2022 Happy Thursday everybody, it is Monique here! Please join me in thanking our ‘Film Colourist’, Justin McDonald, with a ‘like’ or a ’thank you’ in the comments for once again generously donating his time and expertise pro-bono to help us help the reef. What is a colourist I hear you ask? Well it’s exactly as it sounds. Juzzy is the person who can control the colour of the footage in post production. A bit like what you can do on your phone when you ‘Edit’ a photo - although a ...lot more advanced and controllable. Why would we want to change the colour I hear you ask? Well in this case we didn’t want to. We’ll leave that for the tourism and other commercial entity ads ha ha. We wanted it to look as authentic and true to life as possible. But with the high quality digital cameras Damien and Jellan were shooting with, all the footage is captured in what is technically referred to as ‘Raw Format’. This means all the visual information is there but it looks really bland and ugly. It needs someone with Juzzy’s skill to make that happen. So there you go, a little bit of a sneak peek behind the production curtain to see how they do it! And Juzzy, thank you so much for joining our watch! 19.01.2022 Hi, Monique here. Our young local Bundaberg hero is back in the news. Seven-year-old Elijah Richardson is cleaning up the beaches on his doorstep and asks people to stop littering after collecting hundreds of cigarette butts in a matter of days. Many butts he picks up are only 15 steps away from the bin! Elijah became a self-made eco warrior by chance after becoming increasingly concerned by the amount of litter he saw near waterways. He talks to and learns from conservation ...groups like #CoralWatch and Tangaroa Blue Foundation. You can follow Elijah’s story on his page Elijah’s World https://www.bundabergnow.com//09/22/elijah-richardson-lit/ https://www.facebook.com/bundabergnow/videos/1550406935304663/?vh=e&extid=6uhmVnFUx9vX6o9i #citizenscienc #coral #reef #greatbarrierreef #queenslandscience #QBI #savereefs #savereefsfromhome #comejoinourwatch

14.01.2022 Hi, it is Monique. It is amazing how many people are supporting our Operation Billie Eilish, Kit Harington - Jon Snow and Robert De Niro. 11.01.2022 EXCITING NEWS: Concept designs revealed for world-first coral ‘ark’. Great Barrier Reef Legacy is working with Traditional Owners, industry and corporate ...partners, research collaborators, government organisations and tourism operators, to establish the world's first Living Coral Biobank. This ambitious project will preserve the genetic biodiversity of hard coral species by collecting and maintaining living samples of some 800 species worldwide. Importantly, this endeavour will compliment and value-adds to global research and restoration efforts, including activities to rehabilitate habitats and help corals to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate. The facility will be located at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef in Port Douglas, Australia. Designed by Australian firm Contreras Earl Architecture who has ties to the region, along with leading engineering and sustainability consultants Arup and Werner Sobek, the primary goal of the facility is to keep alive and nurture over 800 species of the world’s hard corals. The new building typology a ‘living ark’ will be the only dedicated facility of its kind in the world. Through its innovative design and engineering it will be a world leader in next-generation renewable energy design, creating optimal conditions for coral storage while minimising energy consumption and solar gain. The Living Coral Biobank is the only project that can secure the living biodiversity of the world’s coral species immediately, says Dr Dean Miller, Living Coral Biobank Project Director and Managing Director of Great Barrier Reef Legacy. To ensure this priceless living collection is held in perpetuity for generations to come we need the world’s most advanced facility that also promises to use only renewable energy sources and function with optimum efficiency, while also creating an unforgettable visitor experience - and that’s exactly what this design delivers! One of the lead architects, Rafael Contreras said: This project brings with it a profound responsibility to consider the impact of architecture and the construction industry on the natural world. As one of the world’s major contributors of CO2 emissions and associated climate change, it is essential that the construction industry be encouraged by architects towards carbon neutrality. The Living Coral Biobank is an opportunity to set a global benchmark for sustainable outcomes and zero-carbon goals as well as creating a world-leading conservation and education facility. The ambition for this project is to create a beacon for environmental awareness a centre of hope, learning and wonder. Amanda McKenzie, CEO of the The Climate Council said: The Biobank building will be of immense importance for coral conservation and the community of Port Douglas. As an education, research and design experience, it will contribute to the town’s resilience, development and enhance its worldwide recognition as the gateway to the world’s ever-more precious resource that is the Great Barrier Reef. The Climate Council applauds this wonderful initiative.
