25.01.2022 Are Sales Commissions Really A Winning Strategy? Here are some thoughts "Sales are contingent upon the attitude of the salesman, not the attitude of the prospect."... William Clement Stone "The secret of man's success resides in his insight into the moods of people, and his tact in dealing with them." J. G. Holland "How you think when you lose determines how long it will be until you win." Gilbert K. Chesterton "A salesman, like the storage battery in your car, is constantly discharging energy. Unless he is recharged at frequent intervals he soon runs dry. This is one of the greatest responsibilities of sales leadership." R. H. Grant "Internalize the Golden Rule of sales that says: All things being equal, people will do business with, and refer business to, those people they know, like and trust." Bob Burg "Victory is sweetest when you've known defeat." Malcolm Forbes Reference: Talking Business with Murray Browne ProfiTips eNewsletter 6 August 2012

23.01.2022 The Australian Taxation Office has issued its annual compliance program, 'Compliance in focus 2013-14', setting out the areas it will focus on in its investigations and reviews throughout the coming year. The compliance program can help you determine the likelihood of being subject to scrutiny by the Australian Taxation Office. If your business operates outside of Australia, you have a "complex" business structure, you are involved in the construction or building industry, you have offshore based service hubs in your business structure (especially if you have an e-commerce operation), if you use trusts and/or have large employee related obligations, it is likely the Australian Taxation Office look at areas of your business over the coming year.

21.01.2022 BUYING A BUSINESS CHECKLIST - PART 2 OF 3 on the 11 February, we started looking at factors to consider when buying a business, here is the next part of that article. 4. Track Record. There is no better starting point to assemble form on a business than the Tax Man. 5 years of tax returns and their attachments will tend to tell the worst-case story as the owner will have attempted to minimise their tax by minimising their stated earning. It's hard to hide easily f...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Is there still a need for a Shareholders Agreement between family? Attwood Marshall Lawyers Says YES! When poverty walks through the front door, love leaves through the back door.... Whilst business is going great and all the shareholders do what they have to do there is usually no need for any formal agreement between them. This usually changes dramatically when the business suffers a downturn or some other unforeseen event causes a significant disruption to the business. We unfortunately live in the real world and not in a perfect world and therefore things happen over which we sometimes have no control. 18.01.2022 In a slump? Cant get motivated. Here are some tips for getting yourself out of the Slump. 1.Write it all out - what do you want, what changes are you looking to make, what is your big dream, write reams and reams if you want, don't stop the creative flow once it gets started.... 2.Pick one goal - that's right, drill it down to just one goal, make it easy to achieve, now is not the time to challenge yourself too much. 3.Break it down into steps - write out all the little steps it will take to achieve this goal, and then number them in order of what needs to be done first. 4.Get organised - what do you need to get it done efficiently, de-clutter your space, do both your work and home if possible so that the sense of moving forward carries through all aspects of your life. 5.Delegate if possible - recruit others to the cause, or outsource to specialists. 6.Give yourself a time frame in which to get it done, and try to stick to it! 7.Re-read your goal and tasks several times a day to keep you focussed. If you find yourself slipping off into the land of YouTube or Facebook, then it is time to read your goal and tasks again. 8.Look at the other areas in your life that have been pushed off to the side and start to integrate them back into your daily routine. This might be as simple as walking the dog, or getting your receipts filed. 9.Congratulate yourself on a job well-done. Every time you achieve something, even the small stuff, give yourself a pat on the back and tell yourself (and anyone else within ear shot) just how awesome you truly are! Motivation is not a constant thing that is always there for you. It comes and goes, and comes and goes again, like the tide. ProfiTips eNewsletter Murray Browne 2 April 2012

02.01.2022 BUYING A BUSINESS CHECKLIST - PART 1 OF 3 There is probably no situation more pregnant with opportunity - or with risk and loss - than buying a business. Sure, if you buy the wrong house you are going to lose some sleep living in it, and some money fixing it or flipping it, but that will be nothing like the money you will lose by buying "the wrong business" or even by buying the right business at the wrong price.... If you are thinking of buying a business, here are some key steps you can take to accurately quantify in the candidates you may consider, their potential for risk and reward in your hands: 1. You. Yes, you. Are you looking at businesses in a market in which you already have commercial experience, or will you be an amateur in a market new to you? If the latter, you will need to ensure that: a. The business comes with stable, moral key staff whom you can grow to like and who can grow to like you as their new proprietor; or b. You have access to expert advisors/consultants/coaches who have experience in your new industry and market and a track record of assisting their clients to succeed. 2. Value. Buying a business at its full value sometimes does not make sense. Warren Buffet's rule for buying businesses is (besides ensuring they have a track record of strong cashflow and excellent management and a good market relevance) that they be priced at least 20% below their market value. That does not mean 20% below what other people thing they are worth; it means 20% below what you think - and have calculated - they are worth. 3. Market Research. The time for you to do this incognito is before you become a member of a new market by buying into a business in that market. So, if you have a business in mind, shop them and their competition and see how they stack up from the customer-experience point of view. You will probably be able to dig out such interesting information as market share (or at least relative ranking); position in the pricing table; quality of service; marketing clout. There is nothing to stop you collaring the reps from one or two key suppliers are asking them for their ideas on the relative ranking of the key players (you don't have to say who you are considering buying). Part 2, To be continued next week... Reference: Talking Business with Murray Browne ProfiTips eNewsletter 11 February 2013

01.01.2022 Carbon Tax. How will it effect your business. A survey has shown that 42% of Small medium Enterprises (SME)still dont understand the incoming Carbon Tax. ( Survey By MYOB. March 2012, 1043 SME surveyed) Carbon tax comes into effect in just over 3 weeks. ... MYOB CEO, Tim Reed, stated "What many don't realise is that the carbon tax could very well be a positive experience for those who take action now to research, plan ahead, health-check their business fundamentals and capitalise on the opportunities." "Business owners must recognise that, although the carbon tax will have flow-on effects to goods and services they need, there are practical steps that can be taken now to minimise the impact." he said. Six steps MYOB recommend for carbon tax preparedness: 1.Review your current expenses and those incurred over the past year, identifying energy intensive costs that will be affected by the inevitable energy price rises. 2.Gain a deeper understanding of where additional costs may be incurred by asking suppliers about the effect on their business and when they will be able to tell you their price impacts. 3.Consider locking in contracts with key suppliers now, at pre-carbon tax rates. 4.Review your important business processes and identify areas where you could be operating more efficiently by, for example, changing processes, upgrading equipment and re-training staff. 5.Analyse your current pricing and assess how the additional costs may impact your profit margins. You need to justify any price increases not only to your customers, but also to the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) if asked. 6.Ensure your accounting software is up to date so that the carbon tax changes are seamless. I hope you have a better grasp and understanding of some steps that can be taken to help your SME. If you have any questions or still dont quite understand, we will gladly help.

01.01.2022 Handling Stress With Humour We hope these make you laugh on this fine Wednesday. It's time for professional help if you find yourself trying to deal with stress in these ways...... Putting miniature marshmallows in your ears and humming loudly. Using your Mastercard to pay your Visa and vice-versa. When someone says "have a nice day", telling them you have other plans. Making a list of things to do that you have already done then ticking them off to feel as though you are winning. Filling out your tax form using Roman numerals. Taping pictures of your boss on watermelons and launching them from high places. Reading the dictionary upside down and looking for secret messages. Leafing through "National Geographic" and drawing underwear on the natives. Reference: Talking Business with Murray Browne ProfiTips eNewsletter 4 & 9 April 2013
