24.01.2022 Big breakfast or light breakfast? Always lots of different factors - BUT it seems that what you do after is important and if you sit a lot after breakfast, then your blood sugar levels are more likely to be higher. (NB This was a small group of pre-diabetic overweight individuals aged 60-66: Is this you?)

21.01.2022 Climate change is a health issue. The impact will be an increasing one.

20.01.2022 From Fr Rod Bower: When will we love our kids more than being right. For my friends who argue against pill testing. If it saves the life or permanent disability of one young adult who has made one or a couple of stupid decisions, then it will have been worth it.

17.01.2022 It seems one of the best things you can do for Living Well and Long is to challenge yourself. Get breathless regularly! In this article, Being 'below average' cardiovascular fit is heaps better than being 'low' fit and this is associated with longer life even more strongly than giving up smoking. Summary: Those who lived longer tended to have a healthy fitness profile when they were tested (on average) in their 50's https://jamanetwork.com//jamanetworkop/fullarticle/2707428 https://edition.cnn.com//study-not-exercising-w/index.html

12.01.2022 People with MS often fatigue more quickly in hot weather. Drinking cold water is suggested by a number of MS Societies. How it works though is unclear. So this study looked at the effect of drinking water on core temperature. The typical rise in body temperature didnt change with drinking cold or body temperature water. So it seems that cold water has it's affect by stimulating cold receptors. If loading up with cold water is difficult, it maybe that cold mouth rinses may help - but this will need further research. Well Done! Great information from the NEURA research group.

12.01.2022 "Aint science grand"!

10.01.2022 Some very simple advice - make habits healthy habits. Prescriptive diets are mostly unnecessary - arrange healthier choices ; prescriptive exercise is mostly unnecessary - just be more active; improve routine sleep. The community and governments need to help these choices as they have a major impact on our environment - for example, advertising regulations, food standards, pricing of soft drinks, and access to open space for activity.

09.01.2022 Seems obvious that if you are healthy, then a medication doesn't help! I think what it does show is that we have no way of accurately identifying risk of a cardiovascular event in a population where that event hasn't happened before but there are better known risks with some of the side-effects of these types of drugs, then we should be more cautious. This has been argued for other types of medications such as cholesterol lowering drugs eg. statins.

08.01.2022 Balancing benefit with harms. What seemed such a promising drug in the management of some chronic pain disorders, has not had the benefits expected and now with lots of downs sides being more apparent.

07.01.2022 A little primer on our immune system - must get that flu shot!

04.01.2022 This is intriguing and exciting - [Herpes infection (HSV1) PLUS a specific gene] is associated with increased risk of Alzheimers, possibly through a mechanism of HSV increasing protein deposits in the brain - the same ones which go with Alzheimers. Anti-viral treatments have a potential role as would vaccinations as well as more closely monitoring of those carrying the APOE4 gene. They reference another study which suggest a similar impact from Herpes Zoster (Shingles). I wonder whether they have looked at other Herpes virus forms, and chicken pox?

03.01.2022 When there is a lot of debate around the value of fish oil supplements for other conditions such joint arthritis, this is positive news for mums-to-be to reduce risk of pre-term births.
