25.01.2022 Congratulations to our two Kent Street Senior High School CoRE ANSTO Hackathon Teams, who both placed in the top 6 teams out of 36 competing across Australia, including 2nd place! A special thanks to their inspirational leaders,Kathleen Booth and Stephanie Claire, who has been with students on their CoRE learning journey for the last 3-4 years. In Kathleen’s words It was their CoRE learning which helped them plan, navigate, problem solve and create their solutions to the hac...kathon competition. This is an outstanding national achievement and a credit to students’ motivation and work ethic and awareness of the need to be positive social and environmental citizens of our future world. Kent St CoRE is the CoRE Learning Foundation’s lighthouse school and this achievement is a testament to a legacy of contemporary #STEMLearning, which has been at the heart of its development and evolution for the last 15 years. CoRE is ‘for the students by the students’, and like the students before them, these champions will confidently follow their passions and aspirations as they work towards their future careers. 23.01.2022 The real classroom is in full swing! Last week, Tom Price Senior High School CoRE students embarked on three separate field trips to Karijini National Park. Year 7’s visited Weano Gorge to explore interactions between Earth’s spheres. Students paid special attention to the water cycle and the chemistry of solutions, in addition to geological processes and the unique biology of the Pilbara. Year 8’s studied earth processes involved in sedimentation, volcanism, and metamorphis...m. Students were immersed in the rock cycle as represented by the Archaean geology of the Fortescue and Hammersley groups. Similarly, Year 9’s examined ancient and contemporary geological processes to examine the broad-scale effects of plate tectonics. They will go on the apply this knowledge when designing their own exoplanet, complete with plate tectonics and life. #therealclassroom #futureleaders #STEMLearning #CoRE

14.01.2022 Our first Tom Price Senior High School CoRE Hub Showcase was packed, brilliantly adhering to COVID requirements For the CoRE Learning Foundation, it was our first event that demonstrated our vision of CoRE Talent Pipeline - from year 5 through to year 9. In 3 years it will be to year 12 in 3 years The hall was packed with energised students sharing their work with proud parents and members from the Ashburton Shire Community. The student speeches beamed with their pride in... their CoRE education and the fun they have experienced in #therealclassroom from Year 5 Ryley from Tom Price Primary: "This year I have learned a lot about science in CoRE. It is a very fun subject. We have been building trains with electric circuits this term. I like working in teams on the project and helping our classmates. At first, we had to learn a lot about getting along but now we get along and work hard." This statement tugs at the essence of CoRE, it is a collaborative and inclusive learning environment which enables all our students to develop their STEM skills and achievement and most importantly within their relevant environment, so they can develop an understanding of their learning. This is a unique situation where the primary schools provide the students with the skilling and then in high school, they will be extended. Next year we welcome Paraburdoo Primary to this hub. We would like to thank our key sponsor Downer Group for supporting this event. #therealclassroom #CoREshowcase #CoRELearningModel #CoreExpansion #handsonlearning

09.01.2022 To ensure that STEM Learning is maintained and evolved, CoRE Educators must be leaders. CoRE Educators embrace the learning model, they evolve and customise it, and it is they who engage the students and get the best out of them. Every so often we will be highlighting the incredible work of CoRE Educators in this Educator Interview series! Our first is with Brigitta Ryan, Year 5 and 6 Teacher at Tom Price Primary School. Below is a preview of the interview. To read it in full... head to https://tinyurl.com/y569w4tj Brigitta, what do you find are the benefits of the CoRE Learning Model? I have found the CoRE Learning Model to be flexible and adaptable, which has allowed us to customise each PBL to ensure it is accessible for our students. This has then increased student involvement, curiosity, and the thirstiness to delve deeper, expand thinking, and ask more complex questions. What results and changes have you seen in your students’ learning? Students have become more inventive and curious to find out more. They aren’t just relying on a teacher for answers, which is a more traditional way of seeking information, they are becoming more proactive, by using their initiative and inquiry skills, to expand their knowledge and thinking. #futureleaders #CoRE #therealclassroom

07.01.2022 The CoRE Learning Foundation welcomes to the family our new Champion School for the Wheatbelt, Merredin College. Merredin CoRE was launched over the first 2 weeks of Term 1 with great success. The CoRE Learning Model has been introduced to Years 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10, consisting of 115 students and 3 educators and they have hit the ground running! Two field trips have already taken place seeing Year 5 and 6 students explore local bushland in the hopes of studying the Mallee Fowl..., a native and ubiquitous species of the Wheatbelt. Fortunately, students had the opportunity to visit a brilliant example of a Mallee Fowl mound. Year 7 and 8 students visited Narnkeening Gnamma holes in the effort to draw connections between the rock cycle, the diagnostic granite outcrops of the Wheatbelt, and the Aboriginal Australian engineered gnamma holes. Students discovered how essential these holes were for Aboriginal Australians as they migrated across the Wheatbelt region with changing seasons. #CoRELearning #STEMLearning #therealclassroom Ramelius Resources

01.01.2022 Last week, Kent Street Senior High School CoRE Alumni of 2016, 2017 and 2018: Gladella, Lee-an and Ryan, all studying Applied Geology at Curtin University, attended the world's only (known) currently running, geological field trip. The students built on their knowledge of #therealclassroom whilst mapping the Archean greenstone lithology of Mt Hunt in Kalgoorlie. Here's what they had to say: "I always knew when I started studying geology that at some point, I was going to ...have to go out into the field in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. This may not seem like such a big deal, but for someone with a boatload of mental health issues, this was a massive thing to me. This field trip taught me the importance of adapting and adjusting your theoretical knowledge when things aren’t so clear and pretty in the field. I also learnt that not everyone is as scary as they seem and that it’s okay to reach out for help from your teachers and peers. The field trip was extremely helpful for me academically and personally." - Gladella Ulep, 2016 CoRE Alumni "The field trip was an eye-opening experience in that not all rocks in the real world look like the pretty, easily recognisable rocks from your textbooks. I'm grateful for our unit coordinators who worked hard to make this opportunity possible for us." - Lee-an Lu, 2017 CoRE Alumni "The field trip was challenging, but a massive step in progressing forward towards becoming a geologist. The days were long, geology was complex, and the rocks barely looked like anything out of a textbook. Using the skills acquired from CoRE and working in #therealclassroom I felt I was able to work at a high standard and excel in areas where others who have not been part of CoRE may have struggled." - Ryan Wade, 2018 CoRE Alumni WA School of Mines Alumni Chevron Australian Geoscience Council Saracen Mineral Holdings
