24.01.2022 Self portrait of an illustrator turned graphic designer - our creative director Tim Claeys. There are a few of his doodles here as well. This is what happens when the artist takes minutes at the weekly staff meeting, or perhaps when he doesnt. Hell also be putting his talents to good use as a judge for the World Illustration Awards later this year. See the link in our bio for more info on our blog about how we use #illustrations to help our clients and what Tims up to. . #contentmatters #artist #illustration #communication #storytelling #graphicdesign #Melbourne #australia #publishing #clientpublishing @frdc_au @tiffany_jaded @guffgif @nat.batten @ North Melbourne, Victoria

20.01.2022 On the other side of International Womens Day on 8 March, we look back at some of the incredible #women whose stories we have been proud to tell. These women are working in fields as diverse as finance, law, public policy, grains and fisheries ... but are all making their mark and a difference in the world. 19.01.2022 Here at Coretext we're rather blessed to have a wealth of talents at our fingertips, and they come in all shapes and sizes! Creative director Tim Claeys is not only a designer but also an internationally recognised illustrator and what better time to pull out the brushes and dive into hobbies and pastimes previously neglected! This painting of a horse is one of Tim's from earlier years, and we're looking forward to seeing what creative pursuits self-isolation brings.

18.01.2022 Coretext reporter Clarisa Collis in a wheat crop growing on Matt and Rachel Hinkleys property at Derrinallum in western Victoria, just before Christmas. Wheat is Australias largest commercial crop with a farmgate value of about $6.5 billion. Look out for Clarisas coverage of the Hinkleys grains operation in the March-April print and online editions of GroundCover magazine (Issue 145). 15.01.2022 We love it when our remote employees come to visit! Coretext's regional writers, Jo Fulwood and Nicole Baxter, journeyed from WA and NSW to celebrate with us at our Christmas party and what fun we all had! They're pictured here with Coretext's Creative Director Tim Claeys among Melbourne city's festivities.

14.01.2022 We produced this spiral-bound beauty with @thegrdc, designed to help growers quickly identify weeds in their paddocks. Weed management is one of the toughest challenges facing Australian grain growers and costs an estimated $3.3 million every year. Accurate identification of weed species is crucial to guide correct decision-making and weed management. The Common Weeds of Grain Cropping Ute Guide has been designed with accessibility and ease of use in mind, to be kept on hand indeed, in the ute!

14.01.2022 Given that we can only venture out for an hour each day for some exercise in Melbournes stage 4 lockdown, it makes views of the open skies even more precious. And there are still spectacular effects to see, like this 22-degree halo spotted by Coretext writer and editor Catherine Norwood on a recent walk. 13.01.2022 Another magazine published in lockdown! We've had to change a process or two to accommodate working from home, but we're still full steam ahead. You might say it's going swimmingly This is the latest issue of FISH, produced with @frdc_au and the dedicated efforts of all involved. Great work, team!

13.01.2022 Happy and safe holidays from all of us at Coretext even Larry, who clearly can't find his present under the office tree! See you in 2020!

11.01.2022 Science Week and MIFF At Coretext and in lockdown our devices have been getting a workout. Not only has National Science Week moved online, with a feast of fascinating events for all ages, but so has the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). And we have discovered more than a little crossover between the two. We first discovered the documentary The Leadership as a science week event. Part of MIFF, and on right now, this call to arms documentary follows 76 female sci...entists from around the world on the first Homeward Bound voyage designed to heighten the influence of women in STEM. And as the promotional material says, they discover gender inequality in STEM is just the tip of the iceberg. Meanwhile, we discovered the eye-opening AI doco Coded Bias through the MIFF portal. A compelling reminder that the tech weve come to depend on is far from neutral, Coretext editorial director Brad Collis says Coded Bias is a must view for anyone interested in science and technology and how quickly new tools can end up in the wrong hands or put to dubious uses because the community at large wasnt paying attention or even showing interest. The debate has begun about the function, usefulness and dangers of AI and associated machine learning, but Coded Bias makes it disturbingly clear that this might yet again be a case of fantastic technology having unintended consequences because it was developed in isolation to society and in fact is already undermining many of the worlds attempts to improve social justice. MIFF and National Science Week are both on until 23 August 23. Its not too late to discover your own gems among the riches on offer. miff.com.au scienceweek.net.au Our picks of the flicks If science isnt so much your thing, Coretext editorial director Tim Claeys has scoped out more of the MIFF program. (Reviews his own.) He started wit the free animation shorts suite all excellent and mostly dystopian in nature, including the post apocalyptic Wade, man vs. robot in Mother Bunker and a hilarious Dutch short on the human-animal relationship. And then theres: Mayor a doco on the mayor of Ramallah, Palestine exposing the absurdity of conflict Just 6.5 and Iranian drug thriller, narco to crime to punishment, so real hard to believe it was filmed The Diver a 12-minute psycho drama of cinematic excellence Alis Circle an Afghan refugees passage to France with cultural conflicts and sacrifice. In your face realism Da Tie. A Belgian/Ghanaian co production. Brilliant story, excellently crafted, great soundtrack BUT basically thats where it stops and EVIL starts. 10.01.2022 As many of us begin to wind down for the year, the fire season is only ramping up. And as it does comes the fourth and final issue of Fire Australia for 2020, which looks both back into history and forward into the future of firefighting. Even after such a challenging year, it's a reminder to be prepared and put safety first. @afac @fpa_australia @bnhcrc #fireaustralia #magazine #publishing #coretext #contentmatters #scicomm #sciencecommunication #journalism #fireseason #australia #australianbushfires #planahead #firefighters #bushfire #fireaustraliamagazine

10.01.2022 Brilliant headline (especially if you are a Glen Campbell fan). Deftly penned court reporting. Community journalism at its pithy best. Hats off to the Mudgee Guardian. Mudgee holds a special place in Coretexts heart; home of a beloved colleague, the late Alice Macrae.

09.01.2022 We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Premier of Victoria John Cain. Among his many achievements is one of particular significance that many people are not aware of - his pivotal role in establishing the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) around which was built the Victorian State Trauma System which has become a global model for trauma response and management. The story of the systems evolution and impact - especially in reducing the road toll - is told in the book From Roadside to Recovery which Coretext was privileged to work on. John Cain was a leader for the community he served.

08.01.2022 The only visitor Coretext designer Aidan Gifkins has these days! His local Sulphur-crested cockatoos don't heed social distancing restrictions and are always up for a good, albeit one-sided, yarn.

08.01.2022 We dont live beneath the sky, we live within it, says founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society Gavin Pretor-Pinney. Coretext senior writer and editor Catherine Norwood is recently enamoured with our near neighbours, the clouds, in all their various forms. "Learning about clouds is bringing me a new perspective, on weather, on climate, and on our atmosphere the gaseous bubble, lest we forget, that allows life on this planet to exist," she says. Read her blog about these important heavenly bodies: https://www.coretext.com.au//inside-the-sky-an-awakening-t

07.01.2022 There were some logistical challenges but it was great to get these stories up over lockdown. Fantastic work being done out there.

07.01.2022 The festive season is all about giving and celebrating but don't forget to look after yourself in the midst of all the present shopping and food buying. Indulge in some self-care this summer by taking some time for yourself and paying attention to your mental health. We've just published the summer issue of Counselling Australia, and this quarterly journal serves as a reminder to us at Coretext to be mindful of our psychological and emotional wellbeing.

07.01.2022 Taking a break from his laptop during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Coretext director Brad Collis decided to check on his backyard beehives and noticed a brutal eviction underway. When a hive needs more space for brood or for storing food ahead of winter, the female workers begin evicting the male drones (who dont do any work). It is a clinically brutal part of a natural cycle that has been happening for millions of years long before humans arrived and imposed their sensibilities. 06.01.2022 COVID-19 has thrown up countless challenges for everyone, including the higher education sector, which has the task of balancing closures and restrictions with the need to sustain education and research. Universities are an important and valued client base for Coretext, which was created 20 years ago to specifically support the knowledge sector. We have been working hard to help maintain many innovative science communications programs with which we are involved or initiated.... One of these is SOLVE magazine for the University of Portsmouth. This has been extremely successful in raising the profile of its globally significant research, which helps industry, policymakers and the community generally to engage with its science. Because SOLVE 2020 has been delayed until UK universities reopen, we took on the challenge of turning a static print product into a dynamic, multimedia, digital edition using the Joomag platform. It was a wonderfully creative exercise squeezed into a very short time-frame, but it gave Coretexts many diverse talents a chance to spread their wings. Here is SOLVE 2020 digital, incorporating videos, audio and animated graphics that complement beautifully the great writing and design. https://view.joomag.com/solve-magazine/0114851001589434668

05.01.2022 We’re celebrating the launch of Monash Life magazine with our colleagues at Monash University. We really enjoy contributing to this project that tells the stories of incredible Monash alumni. With a globetrotting journalist exposing issues of human rights, a scientist cleaning up waterways, and Australia’s first female Indigenous ambassador, their work makes a difference. It’s a treat for us as writers, photographers and designers to work with such inspiring material and we...’re thrilled our friends at Monash have overcome all the logistical challenges this year to make it all possible. There’s so many to choose from, but here are a few of the beautiful photographs taken for the 2020 edition. 1. Yalda Hakim, photo: Katherine Boyle @katherineboyle_photography @yaldahakim 2. 03.01.2022 COVID-19 is no reason not to bee active! Nearly 90% of the worlds wild flowering plant species depend, entirely or in part, on pollinating insects. (Bees were instrumental in the evolution of flowering plants some 100 million years ago). Today this relationship also extends, crucially, to more than 75% of the worlds food crops. World Bee Day is celebrated globally and while COVID-19 has thwarted many planned awareness activities, people are encouraged nevertheless to think ...about these extraordinary creatures that played an important role in human evolution and continue to support our existence. It is important to learn about bees because their wellbeing and our wellbeing is interlinked. One way is to set up your own beehive. The activity of a hive is fascinating to watch and for good hive managers which can include children because it is not difficult to learn there is always the bonus of some delicious, healthy, natural honey each summer. Coretext principals, Brad Collis, Adrienne Dolphin and Tim Claeys have been keen bee carers for many years, looking after hives in the city (Melbourne) and in the country (South Gippsland) as these recent snaps show. 03.01.2022 Lockdown done right! Coretext's directors celebrate their sourdoughs ... Editorial director Brad Collis is snapped here with his scrumptious rye, and creative director Tim Claeys' crusty beauty is a white loaf. Both sourdough starters utilise a natural airborne yeast Brads began at Cape Liptrap and Tims started in Fairhaven and it must be something in that coastal air because these look delicious!
