24.01.2022 Wadawurrung, Wandana and a message of peace // A moving smoking ceremony by Wadawurrung woman Corrina Eccles has spelled out a powerful message of peace and reconciliation at Villawood’s Wandana community. Her voice cracking with emotion, Corrina stood in front of giant lettering spelling out ‘Wadawurrung Country’ as she delivered an especially relevant message. I stand here today to represent all those people who didn’t have a voice, that had to remain silent. ... They weren’t able to share their identity. They weren’t able to stand here like I do, proudly, and say: ‘I know who I am, I know where I belong. I am Wadawurrung. This is my country, my family’s country and the spirit of my people.’ The ceremony launched the’ Wadawurrung Country’ message in Viallwood’s giant corten lettering above the Geelong Ring Road. The initiative was driven by Committee for Geelong leadership students working with the Wadawurrung and Aboriginal business Arranyinha facilitator Marsha Uppill. The three-metre high letters, visible to thousands of motorists each day, were matched by a large triptych artwork by Mount Duneed’s BJ O’Toole depicting the Wadawurrung countryside. The project is aimed at raising the profile, awareness and recognition of the Geelong region’s first peoples. As Corrina Eccles stressed, it was a highly-visible presence not achieved beforehand. So nyatne, Villawood, you can’t comprehend how much this really means. And nyatne, or thank-you, from Villawood to the Wadawurrung for the opportunity to share such important values. As our Geelong senior development manager Paul Abel stated: The Villawood letters have become an iconic part of the Geelong landscape. 13.01.2022 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE // We’re pleased to share with you the latest construction progress at Coridale and our community is quickly coming to life. Stage 1 Bulk earthworks, sewer, water and drainage works are now complete. The team has also recently finalised works to the road layers, and is currently completing concreting, electrical and fibre works. Titles remain as anticipated in Q1 2021, and settlements are also anticipated to commence in Q1 2021. Stage 2 Bulk earthwo...rks, sewer, water and drainage works are complete, as Stage 2 works are closely following Stage 1. With works to the road layers underway, and works to the electrical and fibre network to commence shortly, we anticipate concrete works will commence next month. Titles remain anticipated in Q2 2021, with first settlements also anticipated to commence in Q2 2021. Stage 3 Construction commenced in July 2020, and the team are currently completing bulk earthworks, and have commenced construction of the sewer and drainage networks. The message ‘Wadawurrung Country’, together with a giant artwork by indigenous artist BJ O’Toole, recognise our traditional owners and their deep, ongoing connection with the district’s land, its physical character and spiritual aspects.
