22.01.2022 "A truly great library contains something in it to offend everyone." -- Jo Goodwin For this week's Banned Books Week, we're honoring an author who has spent de...cades fighting against censorship: Judy Blume. As she once observed: "It's not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers. For two inspiring books about girls fighting against censorship in schools - both for ages 9 to 12 - we highly recommend "Property of the Rebel Librarian" (https://www.amightygirl.com/property-of-the-rebel-librarian) and "Ban This Book" (https://www.amightygirl.com/ban-this-book) For a thought-provoking young adult novel exploring censorship, we recommend "Suggested Reading" for ages 14 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/suggested-reading For two excellent books about Mighty Girls who find hope by reading forbidden books - both for ages 12 and up - we recommend "Voices" (https://www.amightygirl.com/voices) and "The Book Thief" (https://www.amightygirl.com/the-book-thief) For stories about girls living in oppressive societies with little respect for freedom of expression, you can find many titles for children and teens in our "Oppression & Repression" book section at http://amgrl.co/2gAoIGs And, for Mighty Girl stories that pay tribute to the transformative power of books, check out our blog post "Celebrating a Love of Reading: 35 Mighty Girl Stories about Books, Libraries, and Literacy" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=11656

22.01.2022 We love our old libraries this one looks much as it did when it was first constructed in the 1590s. This is the Old Library at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and is captured by Lloyd Mann. #libraries #library #photography #CambridgeUniversity

20.01.2022 Good morning friends I have received a few boxes of lovely books from a friend who has been sorting through her son's beloved reads. If you have a reluctant reader there are some treasures here ripe for discovery - and some real children's classics! There are a few big people classics here too, including some little penguin classics to dip into when you don't have much time but need some intellectual stimulation.... As always if you want a particular book just send me a message and I will try to put it aside for you. As loyal fans of this facebook page you get first dibs! My broken leg is now recovering - 6 weeks until the pins come out - and I am more mobile and can now focus on a bit more on making sure that there is always a book or two on the shelves that you can't resist! Happy reading! Alison Street Librarian

04.01.2022 Well, we like to think so! :-)

03.01.2022 "Poems do not endure as objects but as presences. When you read anything worth remembering, you liberate a human voice; you release into the world again a compa...nion spirit.I read poems to hear that voice. And I write to speak to those I have heard." Louise Glück, Hermann Seeger - Reading in the Dunes.

02.01.2022 Good morning. I received a lovely lot of donated books yesterday including many modern and older classics. If you have ever thought about catching up on some titles you missed out on, always check with me, as you never know what gems I have! And if you need a particular book for your child's school booklist, you might just find it here. Happy Reading!... Alison Street Librarian

01.01.2022 Reading is an act of civilization; it’s one of the greatest acts of civilization because it takes the free raw material of the mind and builds castles of possibilities. Ben Okri Tavik Frantisek Simon - Vilma Reading on a Sofa, 1912.
