25.01.2022 WEIRD WEDNESDAY - Reuben is disguising himself to see if he can escape out of this lockdown! He has gone a bit stir crazy.

23.01.2022 Puppy count! Do you remember the x-ray we posted last week asking how many puppies were waiting to be born? We had some lovely news shortly after the x-rays were taken - their beautiful mum Gerta gave birth to SIX healthy and gorgeous puppies! 2 black and tan, 2 red and 2 dappled - all as cute as each other! Gerta's human mum is one of our great nurses and is beyond excited with how well her little lady has done with the birth and how much in love with her babies she is

23.01.2022 What a year it has been! We can certainly all agree that this year has tested all of us, in more ways than we ever thought possible. It is more important than ever for us to check in with each other and ask "RUOK?" Here at the clinics, today is officially RUOK day, but we have been making a conscious effort during this crazy Covid time, to sit down each day and have an extra break for some down time to take away from the our daily work stresses. We want to bring awareness ...on how important it is in the Veterinary Industry, to be able to talk about mental health and suicide prevention as unfortunately it is increasing.at a high rate in the Veterinary world. Veterinarians have one of the highest rates of suicide - approximately four-times the national average. In our line of work, our jobs can be very challenging and stressful at times so we ask you all to "love your pet, love your vets and nurses and make time to ask one another RUOK" We would like to thank all of our amazing staff for the great support we give one another and for all the fantastic work that is carried out on a daily basis. 21.01.2022 The Christmas countdown is on! Please make sure you've got enough medication to take away with you, provide to your boarding kennel or cattery or have on hand at home if needed through the Christmas and New Year periods. Many of our suppliers close down over the Christmas period, so now is the time to start planning ahead for your fury friends. 20.01.2022 Staff pet of the month: TJ TJ is the senior citizen in her household at the ripe old age of 13! Her name stands for "Tess Junior" who was her mother and looks just like her. TJ has, in her later years, become a massive fan of snoozing, lounging around in the house and generally being a bit of a couch potato. She enjoys stacking her bed on top of her doggie friend Lady's and sleeping raised up where she can keep an eye of what is happening in the house. TJ is... an attention seeker if ever there was one! She will happily sit for hours as long as someone will pat or rub her - and cries as soon as these stop as she always wants more! She is a chewer and pulls the stuffing out of all of her toys so that she is left with only the outer pieces. She lives with another dog and a cat at home - not a big fan of her cat housemate but her and her cavie friend Lady get on well together. She is a little lady who rules the roost in her house and could not be happier. See more

20.01.2022 Giving cats tablets: Something that strikes fear into a lot of pet owners it is the idea of having to tablet their cat, and it can be quite stressful for all. We have some tips that may make things a little easier: Refer to the instructions given by your veterinarian, and double check that you have the correct amount of medication.... 1) Have your cat in a sitting position and place one hand on top of the cat's head, over the ears. (holding cheek bones as demonstrated in the first photo below) 2)Tilt the head backwards so your cat's nose is pointing to the ceiling. This will cause their mouth to open slightly. 3)Hold the tablet between your thumb and index finger of your second hand as shown in the picture. 4) Open their mouth with the fingers of your other hand. 5) Drop the tablet into the back of the throat as shown below 6) Close their mouth and rub the neck. 7) Ensure the tablet has been swallowed. Good luck, move swiftly and watch your fingers!!

16.01.2022 Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to snake bites! When walking dogs, keep them on a leash and away from long grass and rocks. Stay on open paths. Do not let dogs explore under rocks, logs, timber, or in burrows.... If you encounter a snake while with your pets, try to stay between your pet and the snake, and calmly move yourself and your pet away from it as soon as possible. Clean up the backyard, fill holes in the ground, and remove rubble and building materials. Clear away undergrowth, toys, tools and things that create hiding places for snakes. Consider installing a snake-proof fence around your home or if you’re erecting a fence dig it 30cm into the ground. Remember that snakes can climb! Remove food scraps and spilled bird seed that attract vermin, and subsequently snakes. Avoid excessive watering of lawns and gardens, and eliminate pooling water. (Removing outdoor water sources helps to deprive snakes of necessary moisture.) See more

16.01.2022 WEIRD WEDNESDAY.. Harper is such a poser, she sleeps with legs all over the place - how can this be comfortable!? She looks to be enjoying herself anyway!

16.01.2022 A Baby Magpies Plea If you see me on the ground, hold tight,my parents are likely to be somewhere 'round!' They may be out collecting my food, or chasing off predators that are likely to intrude! Please give them time, and wait to see, they are extremely likely to return for me ;-) As i wobble and clumsily flutter down to the ground, I'm just learning my bearings of how to get 'round'... An exciting new world for me to see. Out of the nest and free as can be! Although i may not yet be able to fly, please don't worry as I'm bound to get by. I can usually flutter and jump to higher ground. I can communicate with my parents by emitting a sound. If you see me in immediate danger, please help and don't be a stranger! If I'm injured,i need your assistance. Call your local animal shelter. Please do not be tempted to take us home and try to raise us on your own. We require experienced care,a nutritious diet like our parents would prepare. We know you mean well, and truly thank you for caring. But when it comes to raising us, even our parents find it overwhelming! See more

10.01.2022 SNAKE SEASON IS NEARLY HERE. Its that time of the year again that we all need to keep our eyes out for snakes. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS Sudden weakness followed by collapse... Shaking or twitching of the muscle Vomiting Dilated pupils not responsive to light In the later stage paralysis may occur and your pet may have blood in his or her urine. You may not see any of these symptoms for 24 hours after the bite has occurred, and generally you will never see the bite wound. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, you must seek veterinary attention IMMEDIATELY. HELPFUL HIINTS Keep your dog on a leash & away from high grass & rocks, creeks or dams Keep your yard tidy and your lawns short Clear walk ways of any debris Make sure no food is left around that may attract mice or rats Store firewood away from the house Always seek professional help in the removal of a snake from your property. REMEMBER:- Remain calm Do not try to catch the snake Keep your pet as still as possible Go directly to your nearest veterinary clinic, even if your pet appears to have recovered

09.01.2022 INTRAVENOUS FLUID THERAPY: Intravenous fluids and intravenous access in dogs and cats are something that we strongly advocate for in the clinic - this means placing a catheter into the vein of the cat or dog which allows us to restore blood volume, correct any dehydration present and also administer IV medications. During anaesthetics having access directly into the vein of an animal and giving fluids in this way allows us to control blood pressure more easily and aids with a more stable and predicatable anaesthic for us and the animal. They are an invaluable additional tool in surgery and also for sick or injured patients for medicating and giving fluids and drugs as needed.

08.01.2022 Staff pets of the month: Reuben and Nessie This dynamic duo are Reuben and Nessie - Reuben (JRT) is 9 years old and Nessie (Heinz 57) is 5 years old. These two are pretty much joined at the hip, both are rescue dogs and the best boy and girl ever! They are both extremely sensitive and caring and absolutely love all other creatures. They have the best natures and are fantastic foster siblings for cats and dogs alike, which is wonderful as they often end up with "house-guests".... They are very calming influences on others and adore children. Nessie looks like a miniature German Shepard but is actually a border collie x kelpie....with tiny legs. As you can see, her special talent is pretending to be a dead cockroach, she also likes to honk like a goose. Reuben performs many tricks, he will do ANYTHING for treats. He can speak, roll over, beg and ring a bell. He is excellent at mind power and will stare at you until you take him for a walk. It always works! This happy pair are a constant source of joy for their lovely owner and are living their lives to the fullest and happiest they can possibly be.

06.01.2022 Meet Stretchy Stretchy is a Darwin Albino Python who is owned by our lovely work placement student Caitlin. Stretchy came in for a visit last week and received plenty of attention by all of us here at the clinics :-)

Simply make an appointment, bring your pet in, weigh them and purchase the worming tablet from us and our friendly nurses will worm your pet for you.... 04.01.2022 Urinalysis: A diagnostic test: The first photo below is known as a urine "dipstick". It is used to check for a number of parameters in a urine sample such as glucose, pH, blood or ketones. Chemicals on the stick react and cause a colour change depending on the levels of certain products in the urine. These changes can be invaluable at helping the vets to diagnose various conditions, and used in conjunction with a urine sediment (second picture) is a tool used frequently ...in veterinary medicine. The sediment is formed when particles in the urine are spun out and the sample is then examined under the microscope to check what cells are present, or if there is blood or bacteria present. If an animal is suspected of having a urinary tract infection or any other urinary issue we will usually examine a urine sample to aid with our diagnosis. See more
