24.01.2022 Like icing on the cake, we wrapped up this gorgeous house renovation project in Ashgrove with the issuing of the final pieces of engineering paperwork. Here's a little walkthrough of our involvement. Congratulations to the team: @jdl.construction @empiredesignsbrisbane ... And might I say, proudly engineered by Cornell Engineers. See more
23.01.2022 Shout out to Biloelans (my word for the good people of #Bileola) tomorrow. I'll be in town (via Virgin Australia and Avis Car Rental Gladstone) to help propose a course of action for stabilising some buildings that are bucking and weaving.
23.01.2022 Caption this photo....
22.01.2022 Where did this terrible weather come from? Luckily we have LOTS of fresh beautiful flowers in fridge today to brighten even the dullest of days
21.01.2022 I'm not saying developer's blocks aren't as free-draining as they should be. This photo is saying that. I'm not.
21.01.2022 All aboard!! We are on our way for a job at Stradbroke Island!! Yes even engineers work on Saturday
20.01.2022 We all know that decks need to be braced so you don't get that wobbly feeling (Whoa, that wobbly feeling...). BUT When we specify sub-floor bracing for decks we prefer to use hardwood braces screwed to the underside of the deck joists. The reason is that 30 x 0.8 G.I. (galvanised iron) strap just doesn't have the long term durability that we prefer our structures to have. Strap bracing is fine in enclosed spaces, inside walls, under roofs and under sealed floors. ... Everywhere else, we reckon you should be using solid timber braces. See more
20.01.2022 Jenny Bae, our graduate structural engineer, has really captured the spirit of some of the Cornell Engineers team in her caricatures. What do you think?
19.01.2022 Spot the problem.
19.01.2022 A little bit of aerial footage of a massive garage being constructed by David Whitehouse and the team at Whitehouse Builders.
19.01.2022 Another little pro bono (pr bn) job for our sporting community at Benowa Bowls Club. The new verandah looks a million bucks (well, now that it's finished it does).
18.01.2022 Some very useful advice for engineers and others on Patrick Irwin's website https://www.irwinstructures.com.au/articles/ He's an unofficial mentor to me (in that he has no idea I hold him in such high regard) and very much worth taking advice from. Which article did you enjoy the most?
18.01.2022 I'm putting the finishing touches on an article about improving drainage around a house. Could you share some photos of poor drainage around YOUR house that we can use, please? https://cornellengineers.com.au/houses-on-sloping-blocks-w/ Matt
17.01.2022 We were very proud to have helped this incredible woman this week. Our client, Jebet Kipsaina, is a lady who has made a career out of helping those who need it most. That's a soul-goal that's very close to our heart. https://www.perthnow.com.au//perth-based-red-cross-nurse-j
17.01.2022 Here’s a reason to wake up. Fresh bag of #merlocoffeebeams going into the grinder. Smell that #coffee #goodmorning #coffeelover
15.01.2022 Inspection today on @northstraddieisland . What in the world are you doing today?
15.01.2022 Enormous. Sunday. Wishes. Have a great day
14.01.2022 See ya Jed! Enjoy your work trip to Gympie, Queensland today!
14.01.2022 Perfect weather for investigating building leaks!
13.01.2022 It's dangerous and messy when plasterboard ceilings collapse. Know the signs and have your ceiling checked by a competent professional if you: - hear loud cracking noises it the ceiling, - see plasterboard sagging or drooping, - notice dislodged cornices or ... -see small circles or blisters scattered along a straight line in your ceiling. https://www.qt.com.au//apn-ceiling-collapses-force-/79444/ https://www.commerce.wa.gov.au//spontaneous_celing_collaps https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//woman-trapped-by-queensl See more
11.01.2022 I get it. Sending a Messenger message is just about perfect. - An email is too hard ([email protected]) - A phone call feels so old school (07 3102 2835) - Sending a letter seems prehistoric (PO Box 2572, Ascot)... - Dropping in seems corona-dangerous (1/26 Navigator Place, Hendra) - A site meeting seems too committed (Your place). - And for Facetime, Zoom and Skype you have to get dressed! So send us a Messenger message! Let's get this conversation started!!! (Ahem --- click the Send Message butten!)
09.01.2022 The most dangerous #structuralengineers are the ones who don’t know what they don’t know. The next most dangerous structural engineers are the ones who don’t care. This from Mr David Chandler, the NSW Building Commissioner. Source link below. The first of those who should take note are engineers. On every project where we have identified potentially serious structural defects, the engineer is a member of Engineers Australia. When challenged with some of the issues we are ob...serving it seems anyone but them may be responsible - they were not engaged to check this or they could not be there all the time. But they still issued certificates to attest to construction in accordance with their design. https://www.linkedin.com//anywhere-anytime-inspections-all See more
07.01.2022 This year, Cornell Engineers celebrates 14 years of working side by side with Steve Challen and the team at Palmview Homes Mackay. It was back in 2006 that we first became acquainted. We found a mutual understanding with both of our teams wanting to create sturdy, cost-effective homes with solid integrity and heartwarmingly homely features. 14 years later we're still working together and proudly producing the same exceptional quality investment homes and residences. If you're building or investing in Mackay, we wholeheartedly recommend you speak to Steve and his team at Palmview Homes. His website is https://www.palmviewhomes.com.au/ and you can call Steve direct on 0417 212 218.
06.01.2022 Sorry folks. Discovered this morning that the SSL security on our Cornell Engineers website was expired. https://cornellengineers.com.au/ You would have received an error saying we were insecure. Don't worry. We don't store or access personal information there. It was just a momentary reduction from HTTPS back to HTTP for a little while.... We've got that fixed up again now. We're https again and there shouldn't be any problems researching structural engineering, slab heave, moisture entry issues and selecting Cornell Engineers to be Your Engineer. Welcome back!!! 05.01.2022 Step 1 of a home renovation. Feasibility? Finance? Assemble team.
05.01.2022 Hydro-excavation is a tool for digging safely near services that we don't want to damage. High-pressure water and a big vacuum cleaner work hand in hand to loosen the soil and then suck it up. This project is a new fence being built by Rigoli Constructions.
04.01.2022 Hello and thanks again to all our followers, likers and supporters. We've been neglecting you somewhat and I apologise - but we've been so busy in the office with new builds, #renovations and house repairs. So, if you feel like renewing your acquaintance with Cornell Engineers, head over to our website and browse through our blog https://cornellengineers.com.au/blog/ or just shout out to us here on #Facebook to make our day!... And keep an eye out, we'll be introducing our newest staff members in a series of intro's in the coming weeks!!! See more
04.01.2022 Whether it is a mezzanine floor in a workshop, a new deck or a whole timber-framed house, we think the best way to get your posts set at the exact right height.... is to hang them from a partially completed frame. Smart huh? This one is from our job with CMBM.
04.01.2022 Selling your cracked house soon? Don't engage a structural engineer to write a report until you watch this video. https://youtu.be/q_OWnzNpGaw #realestate #realestateagent #realestateinvesting #realestatemarket #realestatetips #Brisbane #HouseHunters #Househunting
02.01.2022 Spot the problem....
01.01.2022 Finalising the paperwork on our Dutton Park project today. Nice little job with construction by Tonic Projects and design by the talented @mcpheebuildingdesign https://mcpheebuildingdesign.com.au/
01.01.2022 Has your brickwork wall cracked? Does some of your brickwork overhang other bits of wall? Brick growth is one of the reasons we specify vertical joints in brickwork walls - to allow the bricks somewhere to grow. BUT.... If your renderer grouts right over those joints then the bricks have nowhere to grow. Poor rendering is one of the many reasons we are called to investigate damage in houses.... Did you know that bricks start "growing" from the moment they leave the kiln? Around 0.6mm/m length of wall. So a 10m long brickwork wall will grow in length about 6mm over its life. To determine if the cracks in your brickwork are brick growth we look for overhanging brickwork, long panels of brickwork with no articulation gaps or breaks, and we check your floor levels to see if there has been foundation movement. Here's our video about the other reasons we add articulation joints. https://youtu.be/02F1mlmHqmI
