18.01.2022 Aboriginal heritage and connections The largely waterless lands of the Corner Country were traditionally occupied by several Aboriginal groups. In the Milparink...a area lived members of the Maliangaapa people, around Tibooburra, were Wadigalis and Wangkumaras. A fundamental understanding of the land and environment helped Aboriginal people to survive, especially their ability to find and conserve water. Many Europeans, both explorers and early settlers, could not have survived without the help of the Aboriginal people. Trade routes and tracks were established across the desert to the west, to the north and east to the rivers. Stone artefacts found in the Corner Country had their origins in quarries hundreds of kilometres away. The settlement by Europeans brought dramatic and significant changes to their way life in the Corner Country. As pastoralists spread their flocks of sheep across the region there were often serious and tragic consequences. In time many Aboriginal people were employed on the newly formed stations and were able to co-exist with pastoralists on their traditional lands. They were highly regarded as stockmen. Others moved to local centres such as Tibooburra. The Tibooburra Local Area Land Council today provides a link between the past and present with a Keeping Place of aboriginal artefacts as well as a camping area on the eastern edge of the township. Just follow the emus! Please be aware that some of these images depict persons of Aboriginal descent who are no longer with us.

18.01.2022 Stunning Sturt National Park is now home to bilbies! 100 years after they were declared extinct in NSW, Greater Bilbies have been released into a large feral ca...t and fox-free area. The reintroduction program is a partnership with UNSW’s Wild Deserts project and Taronga Western Plains Zoo, which aims to turn the tide on extinctions by reintroducing at least 13 regionally extinct mammals into NSW. Sturt National Park is now the third national park in NSW to welcome bilbies back home. 06.01.2022 Oh wow! and a Tibooburra show just added#$!!!

06.01.2022 My intention is to publish a series of albums that explore "what is Corner Country" and more importantly, "what sets it apart from the rest"? This is the first.... Across the far north-west of New South Wales is the area known as Corner Country. It’s a ruggedly beautiful and remote area where the straight lines of the wild dog border fences are at odds with the contours of ranges, sand dunes and creeks. It is a place to which one can escape. The larger towns and cities are far away, there is little or no noise, there is light and colour during the day, far horizons upon which the sun rises or sets, and at night a billion-star sky. Yet it also offers the comfort and camaraderie found around a bar, a dinner table or a campfire. Corner Country is the only New South Wales area bounded by two states, Queensland and South Australia, with borders intersecting at Cameron Corner. It derives its name from John Brewster Cameron, who, in 1879 surveyed the 29th parallel along the Queensland border. Visitors can step through three states in moments, and enjoy accommodation, meals and drinks at the Cameron Corner Store. The Corner Country is unincorporated meaning that there is no local government across the entire area. Much of the land is Crown Land and leased by landholders for grazing livestock, whilst Sturt National Park is an amalgamation of expired leases and acquired properties surrounding the township of Tibooburra. Milparinka is the only other surviving township in the area. Despite its relative isolation, Corner Country’s low population, relative freedom of movement and lifestyle and accessibility to Broken Hill, Bourke ( Wanaaring), Wilcannia (White Cliffs) Queensland and South Australia makes it an ideal place for living and visiting.
