24.01.2022 Some progress the last 2 days. Got the diff housing ready to drop out yesterday, i removed it this morning and then time to do a lift so I can prep/paint underneath with Raptor. Because of social distancing flipping it onto its side wasnt an option so had to go this way, was a slow process but I got there eventually

24.01.2022 Uh oh Amazing how some broken through rust bubbles on the inner wheel arch can escalate quickly I had no idea of this rust trap, its since broken through on the engine bay side where the round spot is and once I start with the wire wheel Im expecting it to break through down on the pressed section where the surface rust is showing.

23.01.2022 Great news, my latest shipment has arrived The tracking sat idle for 6 weeks New front caliper assemblies, rear backing plate assemblies, Lada Sport front disc pads, brake reservoir, handbrake cable and I think a can of Russian soup Not sure what it is to be honest, Ill have to ask The new parts warehouse is slowly filling

21.01.2022 Some action today, well there has been plenty of action lately but all boring prep work so finally some shiney stuff to show. Seam sealed the front/back wheel arches, put another coat of the miracle paint in those pesky rust traps also, then on with the Raptor black. I am hoping to get some epoxy primer on the engine bay tomoz

21.01.2022 I love watching manufacturing

21.01.2022 Got some paint on today Very happy with the colour, i will try and finish the panels tomorrow weather permitting Ive decided to brush the floorpan and the exposed colour parts I may even roll the Raptor on to save making a mess.

20.01.2022 After a couple of days of putting the riggers gloves on and doing a reverse deadlift and slowly backing the Niva up the slope and into the shed my body has said enough Strained around the front/rear of my rib cage due to a poor grip yesty arvo and took a bit of pumping up to tackle it this morning and only got halfway out of the shed and the muscles around the ribs said no more old fella Now it hurts when I sneeze Now I knew Andy had this platform next door, much smarter

20.01.2022 Ticking along nicely, the donk is ready to come out so I can hook into the prep work on the engine bay. Also finished patching the tail gate but havent ground the welds back as yet, my first patch without blowing a hole as well, I must be getting better but Im also not afraid to cut more suspect material out though, but my tacks have improved a lot.

20.01.2022 Finally some colour Reasonably happy, a few oops moments here n there. 2 coats of Raptor epoxy primer and just the one coat of a shade or so off Army Green. The colour ? Maybe a tad darker would of been nicer.

20.01.2022 I got stuck into the drivers gutter, I was pleasantly surprised to find it still nice and solid with no scale or heavily pitted areas The rear passenger window area needed a patch, I blew a hole tacking it in but realized it was a technique issue so once i worked that out i was right, im so slow though and struggling a bit cleaning the welds up Had to fill a few holes near the tail light area as well. All treated/etched, top of the tailgate area next

20.01.2022 The rust repairs are coming along nicely, I am getting better but still blowing holes now n then. I cheat a lot and use flattened copper behind the panel. Took on the passenger side gutter this afternoon with a wire wheel and Im happy to say it was in good cond and didnt need any repairs. The tailgate area will need some welding in areas and so far the drivers side gutter is looking ok but I havent got to the worst looking part as yet

19.01.2022 Made up a template and then a patch for the area I cut out, I had to patch some holes on the opposing panel, I chemically treated it and gave it a coat of miracle paint. I need to give it one more coat and I will weld the patch in plus the extra strengthening area that ties in with the shock mount. Found another sneaky rusted area I had to patch as well.

18.01.2022 I came home from a quick trip to Sydney which is better known as Corona Central or Ground Zero here Australia atm and found this at my backdoor Another pro packaged shipment from Denis, so what do you do when ordering 2 x fuel pipes and need to protect them for shipping Yes thats right.......order some more parts ideally other long items to make it easier for the poor guy So one angry grille and a roof console just had to be purchased ... Thanks again Denis Next shipment was posted yesterday, its now brakes time so I should see that in approx 10 days

17.01.2022 Awesome, something you dont see everyday, 2 transporters with supercars onboard

16.01.2022 In its previous ownership someone has fitted seats from another vehicle and they had butchered one of the seat mounts on the drivers side. So today I got the cardboard out again and made a new one mirroring the passenger side. Ive only tacked it in at this stage, the passenger mounts are parallel to one another front to back the the drivers are slightly offset which is throwing me a little So once I confirm Ill finish welding it in

16.01.2022 WOW Now thats commitment from these Niva pilots

15.01.2022 Dropped the front end out this morning, only the brake booster, brake lines and cabin air inlet to remove now. Degreased everything again including the inner guards and engine.

15.01.2022 Well Ive worked my way around the Niva and finally found myself back at my starting point chasing rust and I saved the biggest for last I intended to put a dimple in for the grommet hole but I couldnt find anything to use as a die to form it so no dimple. The only trouble now is I look at my first efforts and think to myself they look crap Ill spend the day tomorrow tidying up any loose ends, I also have to make a drivers seat mount and weld it in.

14.01.2022 Well its back on the ground, threw the rear end under it so I can make a start on the rust repairs. Going to buy new hardware for the control arms/shocks and also colour co-ordinate the boots/springs to suit the new colour when the reinforced housing goes in after its registered and on the road. Hopefully ill have any plating that needs done finished tomorrow

13.01.2022 Wow To good not to share

13.01.2022 A recent vid of Peter Bayer in his Niva rally car Does anyone know of a website that has the current build/specs on this Niva https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGme1QI6Xk8

12.01.2022 Raptor is on, very happy with the texture, I didnt want it too rough. So I guess I better get a plan in place, might give the diff housing etc out of this one a quick paint but its only going back in temporarily. Once thats in Ill rip the engine out, paint the front wheel arches and engine bay, change the front crossmember assembly to the one i got off Eric that has the steel diff housing mounting points and start putting it back together so its running/moveable.

09.01.2022 If you are looking for Lada parts with a more personalized service get in touch with Denis. Great prices, very easy to deal with, awesome packaging

09.01.2022 Bit of action at Cornfield HQ over the weekend I finished the rear arches off, I learnt some new skills having never done any panel work and using a mig on thin material before so I feel a lot more confident to do the rust repairs now. I prepped the rear end and control arms, etch primed and 2 coats of paint. Ready to drop it back down to earth and slot the rear end back in.... Delays on shipping so thats not ideal so I will have to work around a few things but Ill continue with the body because a mate has generously loaned his mig to me so I best get any patches in. See more

08.01.2022 The engine is out, degreased and pressure washed the engine bay. So I have to drop the front end out, cut the front guards, prep underneath/finish with the black raptor, prep engine bay/paint. Ill degrease the engine and give it as well as other crap a coat of paint. Oh and good news after sitting idle on the tracking for 6 weeks my brake package is once again on the move so I should see that early next week. Big thanks to Stu for the lend of the engine lifter, Ive got half of his shed at my place

03.01.2022 Solid weekends effort at HQ Yesterday I welded the patch in, cut and folded both front guards, finished a rust repair on the passenger side door jamb/guard area. Gave the patch area and the mud trap/sill areas a coat of miracle paint. Today I sanded, sanded and did more sanding, I looked like a ghost So the passenger door, bonnet, tailgate and approx 65% of the body has been hit with 80 grit, got some areas that need a little filler.... Ill keep plugging away, getting closer to primer time but we have cool/wet conditions forecasted for next week See more

03.01.2022 Found these guys and their channel recently I thought id exhausted all the Russian 4X4 channels on youtube but its like unearthing a piece of gold when i find a new channel to watch/subscribe to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12-NIUIWaik

02.01.2022 Update from today, degreased and pressure cleaned. Went over with the wire wheel, 90% there, I will treat any bare metal with rust converter, then use etch primer and should be ready for a coat of raptor.

02.01.2022 Just going through my corona outfits, definitely blue Out in the degreasing bay giving the boxes a much needed pressure clean I will get these onto the bench now for a check over, i already noticed the gearbox input shaft has some wear where it contacts the bearing but i wont be getting too carried away, maybe a paint job, as long as they can get me through road worthy. I have spare boxes that i plan to rebuild, the transfer will get all the IZH Techno gear and when i am ready to transform it from stock i will just swap them over.

01.01.2022 Snorky is done and dusted Whilst I still have the mig here Ill reinforce the area a little

01.01.2022 So Ive been looking at the tail gate every now n then thinking I should attack the rust areas with the wire wheel to see what Im up against. The outer skin where it folds at the bottom was being pushed out by the expanding rust from the inner skin, I thought for sure Id have to plate the bottom outer skin as well but it cleaned up ok. Ive got 2 areas to plate where the rear window sits. Reasonably happy with how the bottom turned out considering its the biggest area Ive taken on so far, I will treat/etch tomorrow.
