25.01.2022 Years 8 and 9 students in the Super Studies Photography class have been exploring the theme of windows. Windows provide an opportunity to look outside and be aware of what is happening in our environment, our community and our city. Students captured views from their windows and then reflected on what they could see from the window, what emotions these things evoked, and how their perspective and sense of time may have changed after viewing the world from their window. Here's a lovely photo that was taken by one of the students.

23.01.2022 Inspired by David Hockney's '82 Portraits and 1 Still-life', Year 6 students recreated some of Hockney's famous portraits and then created their own compositions. Here are some terrific examples of their work!

23.01.2022 Congratulations, Kennedy - a wonderful achievement! Best wishes for your new chapter as a Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON).

22.01.2022 Our wonderful Year 5 students have written letters of gratitude to members of their local community working in hospitals, healthcare centres, cafes, supermarkets, police stations and local government offices. The students were really grateful to receive many replies to their letters. -Ruby wrote to her local hospital and her letter was circulated in the hospital's daily update, and also distributed throughout other hospitals in the network -Cayleigh wrote to the team at a...nother hospital. They thanked her and sent back a photo of themselves reading her letter -Charlie wrote to a nurse, who thanked him warmly and shared his letter with other nurses at her workplace -Roxie wrote to her GP, who rang Roxie to thank her. They said the letter had brightened everyone's day and that they would pass it on to other doctors -Liam sent a letter to his local coffee shop, who really appreciated his support What a terrific way to make a difference. Congratulations, Year 5!

22.01.2022 If you're after some tasty new recipes, perhaps you should ask the talented Years 8 and 9 students in the Global Eats Super Studies class! They have been developing their knowledge of international cuisines by researching and preparing dishes eaten throughout the world. Pictured here are Zoe and Amy, whose vegetable and black bean enchiladas and galaktoboureko custard phyllo pie look delicious!

20.01.2022 A terrific article appeared in The Age yesterday about early learning at Cornish, which sees students develop the confidence and skills for lifelong learning. Often, schools see early learning, primary schools and secondary schools as separate experiences, says Principal Nicola Forrest. We believe in the continuity of learning. We see the Early Learning Centre has such a richness to it and focus on what it takes to be a learner, rather than simply teaching topics.... We see clearly that learning starts there, not in Prep. Ashton cooked potato rosti with a poached egg, smoked salmon, rocket and homemade hollandaise sauce; Ruby crafted French toast bowls and fruity pancake sticks; and Talia whipped up some French toast, muesli cups and corn fritters. Yum!

18.01.2022 Happy Tree Week! Cornish students celebrate and learn about the importance of trees all year round, but Tree Week is a special time when they show just how much they appreciate trees. In preparation for Schools Tree Day tomorrow and National Tree Day on Sunday, students have been emailing the trees of Cornish and hugging their favourite trees at home to thank them for all of the wonderful things they do to support life on earth.

18.01.2022 Frosty mornings often turn to glorious days here at Cornish. Here are some wonderfully wintery shots of our grounds.

16.01.2022 Year 6 students have been exploring new ways to express themselves through shadowology in Dhumba-dha Biik. They have learnt about a wide range of art forms including dance, music, literature and sculpture, and reflected on how art makes them feel and what they think when they see it. Here are some fabulous examples of their creativity!

15.01.2022 Today we celebrated and farewelled our Year 12 students with a wonderful Valedictory Lunch and final assembly. The Class of 2020 have experienced unique challenges this year, but their spirit and resilience are stronger than ever. As they reflect on their time at Cornish and look forward to their next chapter with optimism and excitement, our Cornish community wishes them all the very best with their exams and their future endeavours. Congratulations, Class of 2020! We look forward to welcoming you back as alumni of our wonderful school.

14.01.2022 A terrific article featured in The Age yesterday exploring how innovation is a fluid, evolving concept that goes hand in hand with sustainability at Cornish. As Nicole Timbrell, Deputy Principal - Innovation and Design, says, "Innovation is something we do over and over again, rather than a one-off program, event or piece of infrastructure." Nicole also explains how partnerships with organisations such as Real Time Learning enrich Cornish students' experiences by connecting t...hem with industry, preparing them for life beyond the classroom walls. "By facilitating experiences that introduce our students to the bigger picture, outside of the core curriculum, we are teaching them that you cant be what you cant see opening their eyes to a plethora of opportunities and ways of thinking they may never have imagined." 13.01.2022 Our Years 9 and 10 students have been exploring global issues and concepts. Here are some fantastic examples of their work! Year 10 students each wrote a 5,000-word thesis or report and some creative pieces to share their collective understanding around a current political, technological, social or environmental topic for their Visible Thinking Interactive. They also used Socratic dialogue techniques to debate key arguments and issues surrounding their topic. Meanwhile, Year... 9 students considered how issues such as citizenship, health, environmental issues and human rights can cause poverty. They chose an issue and created a display to show how a young person is campaigning for change and making a difference for those experiencing the issue. Year 9 students presented their findings to Year 7 students, sharing knowledge about the complexity of global issues and some action plans to help resolve these issues and end extreme poverty by 2030. Well done, Years 9 and 10!

13.01.2022 If spring cleaning has left you feeling more overwhelmed than overjoyed, here are some terrific ideas by our Year 7 Design Technology students - they're sure to bring back the joy of sorting through the jumble and getting organised!

12.01.2022 Congratulations to our new Parents Association office bearers and committee members, who were elected recently at the Annual General Meeting. New president Amy Jayasuriya-Clifford is excited, together with the new committee, to continue with the great work led by our outgoing president Lara Sinclair and her team. The key principle that will guide our activities is the Cornish motto Make A Difference and our scope is to identify opportunities to bring families together and build and strengthen our Cornish community and to assist with any school improvement projects. We look forward to seeing their exciting plans come to fruition.

12.01.2022 Our Year 7 Language students took part in a fabulous Anime Day as part of their French and Japanese studies. They participated in activities to deepen their cultural and language understanding, including a fantastic manga workshop, and enjoyed a French morning tea of croissants and hot chocolate. Students also enjoyed dressing up as their favourite animated characters - there were some terrific costumes to be seen!

12.01.2022 This year has given many of us more time to learn new things. Year 9 student Damien has been working hard learning 'Summertime' by Gershwin, so enjoy his fabulous performance. It's not quite summer yet, but what a great way to celebrate spring and the prospect of warmer weather. Great work, Damien!

12.01.2022 Congratulations to Year 5 Cornish student Leigh Harvie, who was selected to represent Victoria at the Qingdao International Optimist Training Camp and Regatta in China. This regatta is part of a reciprocal exchange program between the Victorian International Optimist Dinghy Association and the Chinese Yachting Association. Although unable to attend, Leigh's excellent sailing skills in the Optimist Nationals and State Championships earlier this year earned him a place in the top 6 Victorian Intermediate sailors and, as such, a place in the regatta - a wonderful achievement. Well done, Leigh!

11.01.2022 Isn't this enough to make your mouth water? Year 7 student Julian made this delicious breakfast as part of his Food Technology classes. Julian researched and prepared a scrumptious menu for his family to choose from, including French toast with fresh berries, maple syrup and cream; scrambled eggs, omelettes or eggs Benedict; choc-chip and white chocolate/raspberry muffins; pancakes with maple syrup, berries, jams and marmalades; coffee and hot chocolates. He then cooked the dishes his family requested and presented them beautifully! Well done, Julian!

09.01.2022 What makes a good public speaker? Year 12 Cornish College student Tierney Khan can give you some ideas, having been named the Victorian State Champion in the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authoritys Plain English Speaking Awards today! Reflecting on her success, Tierney believes its important to be honest, to have something meaningful to say and to genuinely care about your subject. She says the key is to get the audience to understand and empathise with what you ha...ve to say, even if they cant directly relate to the topic. Tierney certainly achieved this in the finals, with one of the judges moved to tears with her prepared speech, 'Not another speech about feminism'! In addition to a prepared speech, the finalists all presented an impromptu speech on the topic 'Its time'. With only four minutes to prepare, each finalist presented their 2-3 minute interpretation of the topic. A date for the National competition has yet to be announced, but Tierney has been invited to speak at The Wheeler Centre, a literary and publishing centre founded as part of Melbourne's bid to be a UNESCO Creative City of Literature. It is renowned as a leading institution for the art of conversation, and a champion of the transformative power of informed public discussion and debate. Congratulations, Tierney! 09.01.2022 We're delighted to officially launch our Cornish College Biodiversity Master Plan for 2020-2025 today, as we celebrate NAIDOC Week! The Biodiversity Master Plan will provide guidance as we strive to improve biodiversity around the College and its launch also highlights and celebrates how we care for our land in a sustainable and ethical manner. We are looking forward to sharing it with members of our community to get their ideas on how we can preserve and protect the biodi...versity of our environment, now and into the future. NAIDOC Week celebrates the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This week, our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group will hold their inaugural meeting to discuss how we can strengthen relationships, respect and opportunities while fostering higher levels of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions.

09.01.2022 Cornish secondary students participated in Blue Day today and wore blue clothes as a symbol of hope and calmness. They also brought in donations of non-perishable food items, stationery, and hygiene and household cleaning products in support of the Lentara Foundation - a Uniting Church agency that provides asylum seeker support for individuals and families awaiting the outcome of their visa application. Each class will have a blue bag in their form room until tomorrow, Friday 27 November, for students to leave a donation (or two) in. Thank you to all who donated and well done to our proactive students for leading this great initiative to make a difference for others

08.01.2022 Congratulations to Year 10 students Eliza Mason, Amber Wilkeson and Charli Davies, who have been selected for the prestigious Monash Scholars Program! Offered by Monash University, the Monash Scholars Program gives high-achieving secondary students a unique head start into university life. Eliza, Amber and Charli will have opportunities for personal and academic development, giving them the knowledge, skills and confidence to make sound study choices so they can build a pro...fessional network, and also develop unique insights into life as a university student. Well done, Eliza, Amber and Charli!

07.01.2022 It's National Tree Day today! Cornish students learn about trees throughout the year, but today is the perfect day to acknowledge the wonderful ways that trees support life on earth, such as: -producing oxygen for us to breathe -absorbing pollutants and cleaning our air -providing homes for animals and insects -reducing the impact of climate change... -preventing soil erosion -improving water quality by filtering rainfall, and so much more! Research also suggests that trees and green space help lower blood pressure and reduce stress levels. Trees are terrific!

07.01.2022 Applications for Years 7 & 10 entry in 2022 close on Wednesday 16 September. Register today: https://www.cornishcollege.vic.edu.au/enrolme/scholarships/

06.01.2022 Many of us have looked forward to a haircut this year, but for Year 12 Cornish student Molly Dinan, this one was particularly special. Molly is raising money for Variety - the Children's Charity, and recently cut off 40cm of her hair and donated it so that it can be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition. Wigs can cost families up to $6,000 and only last 1-2 years, so Molly's donation and fundraising efforts will make a big difference t...o children in need. Well done, Molly! To support Molly's fundraising efforts, visit: https://hairwithheart.variety.org.au//moll/hair-with-heart

06.01.2022 Some lovely words of encouragement for the Class of 2020. Best wishes to our Year 12 students as they approach their final exams.

06.01.2022 Term 4 has been a busy time in the Design Technology room. The Design Technology Super Studies class are recycling wooden shipping pallets. Although pallets are often made to a strict set of guidelines so that they can be reused, millions are not. Old pallets are growing in popularity as a cheap and effective material to create rustic furniture. Through creating practical, sustainable, ‘nic-nak’ furniture, students are able to give new life to materials that are often found l...ittering industrial areas. Each student drafted a design that they wanted to bring to life, and created a small model out of icy-pole sticks before starting to build the final product. There are numerous shelves, a garden seat, a planter box, as well as a few model cars under construction. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Super Studies class have also been hard at work, constructing small robotic arms. Using servo motors controlled by potentiometers, students will operate the arm with two joysticks that allow it to move on a four-way axis. This project showcases the final steps of an engineering problem by combining hardware, software, mechanics, electronics and a whole lot of problem-solving.

05.01.2022 To celebrate Science Week, Year 3 Cornish students conducted an experiment each day. They worked through the scientific process: finding a question to answer, hypothesising about what would happen, conducting the experiment according to their method and writing about their results. They also investigated capacity, using the scientific method and their estimating and measuring skills to create hanging crystals and concoct special 'potions' for shrinking ogres, curing dragons' coughs, cleaning giants and shampooing unicorns!

05.01.2022 Cornish students and staff paused at 11.00am today to acknowledge those who made the ultimate sacrifice in wars and conflicts. Our 2021 College Captains participated in a brief ceremony as our flags flew at half-mast. Year 1 students also collected natural materials and made a wreath as they talked about those before us who cared for us and our freedom, those who fought in wars and conflict, and those who are the peacekeepers. ... Lest we forget.

04.01.2022 Our General Excellence Scholarship Program for Years 7 and 10 entry in 2022 provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to join Cornish College. Applications close on Wednesday 16 September at 5.00pm. Apply online today or find out more: https://www.cornishcollege.vic.edu.au/enrolme/scholarships/

04.01.2022 Today marks 100 Days of Prep - a very special milestone for some of our youngest Cornish explorers. We're delighted to celebrate their wonderful achievements from throughout their first year of school, which has been filled with excitement, fun, challenges, growth, new friends and lots of learning. Congratulations, Prep!

03.01.2022 A fantastic article featuring Principal Nicola Forrest appears in the July edition of Mornington Peninsula Magazine: 'Nicola considers how sustainability, innovation and student-centred learning are shaping the Colleges future. Being innovative means bringing bigger ideas to the topics, Nicola says. For example, instead of just studying ancient history, lets look at that through the lens of conflict and change. Students might not need to know details about ancient Egypti...ans later in life, but they will need to apply broader, more conceptual understandings about change and conflict as they navigate their way through many aspects of life.' 03.01.2022 It was terrific to see Cornish students and staff exploring new ways of learning in the College grounds for Outdoor Classroom Day. Outdoor Classroom Day celebrates outdoor learning and play. Although we encourage outdoor learning all year round at Cornish, it was particularly important this year as many of us have spent more time inside than usual. Being outdoors helps connect us to where we live and improves our mental health, so it was great to see our students exploring, playing, climbing, discovering, sharing stories, building things, laughing and learning outside. Well done to all who participated!

02.01.2022 The demonstration of our Cornish College values - compassion, respect, integrity and creativity, always with courage - has never been more important and relevant than now. As we seek to navigate the latest set of challenges that 2020 has presented, we continue to support our community and remain connected through Cornish@Home for Parents, which provides resources, news and updates, support and advice from our College psychologists, and also CornishCommunity@Home, a collection of challenges and wellbeing activities for families to enjoy together.

01.01.2022 Science Week is the perfect time to acknowledge the important role that science plays in understanding the world around us. For Cornish students, science is more than a subject - it allows them to explore questions, delve deeply into concepts and make connections across all of their subjects. This creates a richness around their learning in and beyond the classroom, preparing them to be members of society who question why things work the way they do. Happy Science Week!

01.01.2022 Our Year 9 students were really up for a scientific challenge in creating an assortment of Rube Goldberg machines as part of their unit on physics and energy transformations in Science Week. Rube Goldberg was cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor who drew elaborate contraptions designed to solve a simple task by using pulleys, birds, cups, balloons and watering cans. His illustrations have inspired many, including our students, who designed their own contraption...s using pulleys, inclined planes, wedges and levers to solve an everyday problem or complete a simple task, such as opening a door or ringing a bell. The students drafted their grand designs, used trial and error to refine them and then recorded their final results, exploring energy transformations along the way. Heres one example of their amazing projects, created by Orlando and Thomas. [Music: 'Giant Steps' by John Coltrane, 1960]

01.01.2022 Year 8 student Bethan is striving to make a difference in her local community, having completed a Surf Rescue Certificate and become an active volunteer member of the Bonbeach Life Saving Club. Bethan started lifesaving in the Nippers program and has been competing in carnivals since she was 8. She has attended the Junior Lifesaving State Championship event for the last four years, where she was placed 3rd in the 2-person Rescue and Resuscitation event and 3rd in the ...March Past event with her team last year. Bethan is also a keen gymnast but has continued lifesaving as she sees it not only as a sport, but also a vital community activity that keeps our beaches safe. She loves to patrol and assist with water safety and the Nippers program for younger students. Well done, Bethan!

01.01.2022 Congratulations, Tierney - a wonderful achievement!
