21.01.2022 L is for lockdown (no more!) Due to lifting of restrictions, fruit sales will reopen this Monday with the usual hand hygiene and social distancing requirements. At least our trees sort of have a mask in handy, if they ever need one again.
20.01.2022 Researching and writing this story about the history of Coromandel Valley was truly delightful. As the article explains, much of the area's pioneering past can ...be explored on-foot via the scenic Sturt River Linear Park walk. Thanks to Coromandel Valley & Districts Branch National Trust SA chairman Trevor Conlon for his assistance with providing information about the significance of the buildings in the area. The photographs are by Heath Riggs, also a long-time resident of Coromandel Valley. See more
19.01.2022 What a great story of country resilience, independence and determination this photo tells.

12.01.2022 Sometimes, you just want to make a choice with immediate results. Which one's your favourite? MacRobertson was a Victoria-based confectioner, founded in 1880, t...he original creators of Australian delights such as the Freddo Frog, Cherry Ripes, Old Gold, and Snack chocolates. The company was sold to Cadbury in 1967, which is why you'll still see these names on supermarket shelves. Even though the "fruit sundae" and "french nougat" flavours in Snack chocolate have mysteriously been replaced... 12.01.2022 Today not only falls in the middle of NAIDOC week, it's also Remembrance Day. A good time to visit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial. Thou...sands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women have served in Australia’s defence forces. While they have been present at every conflict and almost every peacekeeping mission from the Boer War to the present, it is difficult to accurately determine how many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have served. Policy varied over time, but at some points Aboriginal people were discouraged or prohibited from enlisting. This did not stop people enlisting; but did prompt people to remain silent about their cultural heritage. 10.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them. Lest we forget.
10.01.2022 There's a new podcast in town! 'Our Town' is the first podcast from the National Trust of South Australia. It captures the authentic voices of our communities ...who share stories about their place. The first episodes are South Australian, tune in to hear stories from Gawler and Clare! In 2019, the National Trust of South Australia initiated a project to collect audio recordings for its inaugural podcast program by introducing members of our branch network to new ways of documenting and sharing precious local stories. With the help of a Positive Ageing Fellowship Grant from the Office for Ageing Well, SA Health, they have been able to work with many regional participants. The first towns featured are Gawler and Clare. 09.01.2022 https://indaily.com.au//minister-tells-developer-hands-o/ ...'Speirs said he informed Charter Hall about his decision this morning, after it asked him to ove...rturn the Heritage Council’s decision. He said the Government supported the development as a state significant economic development project, but it was his strong view that the local heritage-listed façade could have been relatively easily incorporated into the development. It’s my view that the developer didn’t place enough significance on the status of local heritage listing, he said. At the end of the day local heritage listing is not an insurmountable protection, but it’s there for a reason. The developer knew it when they purchased the Sands and McDougall building and came up with their proposal for a new building on that site. This wasn’t a surprise to them, so I was quite disappointed that it got to this stage...' OMG..a win !!! Damn straight right !! Can we believe this..guess we can....AWESOME !!!

03.01.2022 To honour those who have fallen, Flanders Poppies (Papaver rhoeas) were planted in the Garden of Contemplation, near the Ginkgo Gate. They have started to bloom just in time for this Remembrance Day. #LestWeForget
03.01.2022 To celebrate World Wombat Day today 22 October we present to you ‘The First Moonta Miner’ seen here at the Moonta Mines Museum. If it had not been for an ente...rprising wombat, the rich lodes of Moonta might never have been discovered. In 1861, Patrick Ryan, noticed green copper ore in the earth thrown up from a wombat. Ryan was an illiterate Irish shepherd working for Captain Walter Watson Hughes, a retired sea captain who ran sheep on one of his properties on the Yorke Peninsula. On finding the ore, rather than showing it to his boss Hughes, Ryan took the rocks to his cronies at Port Wakefield hotel, almost 65 km to the east. A syndicate was formed with the publican which then applied for the mining lease. There was now a race between Hughes and the hotel syndicate to register the lease. Hughes won. Ryan received 6 pounds a week until the Moonta mine should pay dividends on his one-tenth interest. Unfortunately he drank away his success in the pub and died less than a year after finding a mine which became the first in Australia to pay a million pounds in dividends. You can also see two more wombats which commemorate the discovery of copper in Moonta. Erected in 2018 by the Moonta and District Progress Association, a sculpture of wombats Digger and Wanda, about to enter their copper filled hole can be found in Moonta’s Queen’s Square. Why not take a trip to the Copper Triangle (Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo) this weekend to discover its copper rich history? More about museums on the Yorke Peninsula here: https://bit.ly/2Tgxmg4 But do take care look out for wombats crossing the roads! 02.01.2022 It’s #NAIDOC Week, a time to celebrate and acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for thi...s year is ‘always was, always will be.’ These beautiful photographs from the 2020 Bay to Birdwood starting line show Senior Kaurna man Uncle Mickey Kumatpi O’Brien welcoming participants to Kaurna land. The History Trust of South Australia respects the primary place of Aboriginal people in the history of this place. Our Vision for Reconciliation is an Australia that embraces the unique, ancient and continuing history of Australia’s First Nations Peoples and confronts our shared history since colonisation. Free from injustice, a Reconciled Australia will take strength from the diversity of both First Nations and world cultures within its shores and will effect positive social change by acknowledging and reconfiguring the legacies of colonialism. 01.01.2022 Having just found a pile of clean, pressed aprons when clearing out the linen press in my 93yr old Mum's home following her move to aged care, this tale struck a chord with me.
