11.01.2022 Australia’s first hemp beer to hit the market By Tam Allenby on August 31, 2017 in Beer & Breweries, Beer Styles, Craft Beer, New Beers, News, Products East 9th Brewing from Melbourne has announced that they’re set to release Australia’s first commercially available hemp beer. The human consumption of hemp has been banned in Australia since the early 1900s due to its association with cannabis, but will become legal by mid-November this year.... To coincide with this, East 9th Brewing will release up to 50,000 litres of Doss Blockos Hempire Hemp Ale in kegs to select venues across the country, with plans to expand distribution and product range into packaging by early 2018 as well. East 9th co-founder Benjamin Cairns says the brew will emulate the success of hemp beer in the US, where at least eight hemp beer products are available on the market including the Lagunitas Brewing Company’s SuperCritical Ale, a beer brewed with an essential oil called terpene from cannabis itself, which debuted last week. From the health-foods space to hemp-related ASX stocks, and now beer. There’s a great deal of anticipation brewing and it’s a taste that Australians have been deprived of for a century, and now we can all experience it, said Cairns. At East 9th we’re always eager to add innovative products to our growing portfolio, which is why we jumped at the opportunity to create Australia’s first hemp beer. It’s something that we’ve been keen on bringing to life for years, and now we can finally do it, legally! Consumable hemp is expected to be worth an estimated $1 billion in Australia within the next decade. The East 9th team a trio that includes Cairns as well as Josh Lefers and Stephen Wools have a history of releasing politically-oriented products, including ‘The People Vs.’ series of Fog City Cloudy Cider that comes adorned with one of six bold political statements. The team say they’re in the final stages of perfecting the first batch of Doss Blockos Hempire Hemp Ale, which uses organic hemp seeds in the brew, and that the resulting flavour profile is quite distinctive think nutty and smoky, with a subtle creamy mouth feel. 08.01.2022 Melbourne is set to welcome a new brewpub this month with the opening of Tallboy and Moose in Preston. The brainchild of Dan Hall and Steve Germain, Tallboy and Moose will have eight craft beers on tap, takeaway growler fills and lots of local food options. Hall has brewed at several of Melbourne’s best local breweries, including Hawkers Beer, BrewCult and Moon Dog, while Germain has worked in sales and marketing for several local and international craft brands and breweries.... The new brewpub will open Friday, 21 October, with four draught taps pouring the first few batches made by Tallboy and Moose, and the remaining four taps featuring a rotation of locally sourced guest beers and a cider. House beers in the starting line-up include: Deep Steep (chamomile amber ale), Only Ella (single hop pale ale), Tallboy’s Cream Ale (easy drinker) and Tallboy’s Table Beer (balanced mid-strength). Growler fills are on offer, with one-litre XL Tallboy cans to be available at a later date. Tallboy and Moose has an open-plan warehouse style, with beer-hall benches, as well as date night café tables and lounge areas. We wanted to bring the best of both worlds, said Hall. We’ve got the freshest beer possible, in an old industrial building, but we’ve brought in a lot of wood to cosy the space up. We want Tallboy and Moose to feel like a second living room for our locals. A beer garden out the front is in the works and will be ready in time to catch the summer sun. The main feature of the 490 square-metre space is the central 12m bar where drinkers can pull up a stool and sink into a tasting paddle. For the first few weeks the venue will be open Friday and Saturday, while the brewery pumps away to fill additional taps with new styles. Eventually, Tallboy and Moose will open five days a week. Tallboy and Moose 270 Raglan Street Preston, VIC 3072 Official opening Friday, 21 October 21 from 4pm (l-r) Tallboy and Moose’s Dan Hall and Steve Germain

07.01.2022 Still Spirits Our Classic American Bourbon creates a rich smoky bourbon with wood barrel aromas and subtle chocolate and vanilla notes for a smooth finish. Similar to Jim Beam in commercial terms. For a Bourbon to be authentic it has to be made in America, contain 51% corn, be stored in new, charred oak barrels and cannot be distilled above 160 proof.

06.01.2022 The Local Taphouse in Sydney sells By Deborah Jackson on May 31, 2017 in Industry, News, NSW, People, Venues By Vanessa Cavasinni, editor Australian Hotelier Josh and James Thorpe, two brothers, have purchased The Local Taphouse in Sydney from craft beer aficionados Guy Greenstone and Steve Jeffares.... It is the first pub purchase for the brothers, who have worked in a variety of venues all over Sydney, including Newtown Hotel, The Arthouse Hotel in the CBD, and Gilroys Hotel in North Sydney. With the purchase of the Local Taphouse, a deal that was negotiated over four weeks with Greenstone through Blake Edwards at Ray White Hotels, the brothers have formed their own business, Thorpe Hospitality. They have pledged to keep the craft beer focus alive at the renowned venue. We are beyond stoked to be taking the reins at Darlinghurst’s revered Local Taphouse. We will be doubling down on the venue’s commitment to independent beer and breweries, and look forward to working closely with some of our good friends in the industry to bring Darlo locals the best that Australia and the world has to offer, said Josh Thorpe. Greenstone, who invited the Thorpes to the Sydney leg of GABS over the weekend, told Beer & Brewer that he knows the venue is in good hands. As one of the pioneer venues of the craft beer movement in Sydney, we’re thrilled that it is being taken over by people who are keen to continue the legacy of great, independent beer in Sydney. We couldn’t have asked for better custodians of the Taphouse than the Thorpe brothers and we wish them every success. Josh Thorpe is adamant that they will focus on craft beer, with some choice words for the bigger breweries. We do not and will not participate in the market-distorting practise of beverage rebates, currently in vogue with big breweries. We choose to support ‘independent’ and ‘craft’ problematic and debatable terms to be sure, but we all know what they designate: a commitment to quality and inquisitiveness over cash flow and towering management structures. Instead, the Thorpes will split their beer list in two. Half of the taps will house craft beer staples like Stone & Wood, Lord Nelson, and Pirate Life; while the other 10 taps will be rotated regularly between more adventurous and limited beers the idea being that craft beer drinkers want a bit of both. [We’ll have] all the weird, funky stuff that you want to try once, but then you can finish you’re night going back to what you normally love drinking. Thorpe Hospitality will take over operations of the pub on 7 July. See more

01.01.2022 Western Australia’s Feral Brewing Co. has deviated from its usual big hoppy ales and launched Perth Local Lager. The lager will be brewed solely for WA, in recognition of the support the Perth public have given Feral over the past 15 years. Perth Local Lager differs greatly to Feral’s usual line-up of hop-heavy ales, offering a European-style clean, crisp and refreshing beer. For years, big breweries have used, abused and commoditised lager, exploiting the style for their co...mmercial gain, while ignoring the delicacy and finesse typical of these beers. We’re hijacking the style and reclaiming it for the people of Perth, said Feral’s owner and founder Brendan Varis. A traditional, well made lager requires long, slow fermentation and extended cold maturation, often taking weeks or months and is a product of 100 per cent malted barley. By contrast, industrial lager is usually brewed and bottled within days and uses a large percentage of cane sugar as a barley substitute to reduce both cost and flavour. What we’re seeing in today’s market is consumers overwhelmed with marketing focused brands and not essentially basing their decision on flavour. Perth Local Lager is available on-tap now and will be launched as the brewery’s third canned beer release in November, after Sly Fox and War Hog. With the expansion of our new brewery and equipment upgrades, Feral has made a significant investment in sourcing a state-of-the-art packaging line from Leibinger, Germany, Feral’s marketing and communications manager, Natalie Moeahu-Pehi told Beer & Brewer. The equipment upgrade will allow us to see Sly Fox (4.5 per cent session ale) and War Hog (7.5 per cent American IPA) make the move into aluminium cans alongside 4.9 per cent Perth Local Lager. Sly Fox Cans will be available from late October/early November. The release of Perth Local comes on the back of continued success for Feral Brewing Co., which was recently named Australia’s Best Brewpub by Beer & Brewer. In August, a nation-wide survey of more than 6,500 beer consumers conducted by Beer Cartel nominated Feral as Australia’s Best Brewery. While back in July, Feral was awarded top honours at the Perth Royal Beer Show Awards for WA’s Best Brewery and the Nation’s Best Commercial Brewery. Perth Local is now on-tap at select venues around Perth with a wider draught release, 330ml bottles and 375ml cans available from November. See more
