24.01.2022 We all know that it’s not possible to prevent every disaster. And you need more than just a Plan A. You need a Plan B too. Being prepared is a crucial step in building disaster resilience. Planning your response should be a whole of team effort (clue: this is a crucial step). ... When a disaster happens, your mind will be racing as you try to work out what to do. If you have a (written) plan that your whole team understands, you’ll all know exactly what to do.
23.01.2022 "If you could've done one thing to better prepare your business for COVID19 what would it have been?
23.01.2022 Excited to share our Doing Disasters Differently: The Podcast with Renae Hanvin is now live! We have launched this podcast so anyone (and everyone) can listen to real-life experiences and join the conversation towards building resilience to all types of disasters. Disasters are changing. We need to change too.... The best part about the podcast is Renae gets to chat with so many leaders from businesses, communities, governments and non-profits about what we need to think and do differently when it comes to before, during and after disasters. We are learning so much We hope you do too! Here’s a link to the first few episodes: https://corporate2community.com/podcast/ I’d be super grateful if you could share within your networks and please send me a note if you have guests you’d like to suggest.
23.01.2022 From eat-in to takeaway, gin to hand sanitizer and high-heels to uggboots, entire industries have had to change during 2020. We've gone from having to consider business resilience to now looking at entire industry resilience. For you in our small business community; how has your industry evolved and proved its resilience this year? Let us know in the comments.
21.01.2022 There's a fine line between managing risks and vulnerabilities while also sticking together and staying positive. The language used is can be big, scary, intimidating or even hard to connect with. How do you as a business owner or community member prefer to talk about it? Is it 'prevention'? 'Planning'? Preparedness? ... If we need to change the language around resilience and disasters, what words would you suggest
21.01.2022 What if it's the bureaucracy and systems which currently stand that are holding us back from dealing with disasters? What if the red tape was gone and the way the people leading disasters spoke the same language of the people experiencing them? What if the focus from Government and Corporates was flipped from being 'this is something we think communities need' to 'what do the communities actually need?' ... Margaret Moreton, Principal of Leva Consulting Community Resilience and Recovery, and corporate2community Director, Renae Hanvin talk all this and more on this week's #DoingDisastersDifferently podcast. Have a listen and subscribe now! https://corporate2community.com/episode-7-community-resili/

20.01.2022 When our Director, Renae, came across the Waffle House Index nearly a decade ago, it was without a doubt the catalyst for some of what C2C is today. That is, the important role the private sector can play in the before, during and after stages of disasters. Why? Because the Waffle House is driven by a business-wide cultural commitment to serving their community. Their commitment is to get their stores open. Even if it’s just to serve water.... Renae was over the moon when Craig Fugate Consulting LLC agreed to come on the podcast talk to how he discovered the red, yellow and green index, which still provides an overview as to how a community is doing for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today. Mmmmmh waffles...
19.01.2022 As a small business owner herself, our Director, Renae knows only too well how hard it is to find time and money to invest in preparedness and resilience. So do you want to know a little secret? It’s not actually all that time consuming and or expensive! However, disaster planning requires business owners and managers to think and do a little bit differently in their everyday business as usual. Which is exactly why she took the opportunity to speak at the recent Otways Fire and Rain Summit. If you own a business in a regional area - this one's for you!
18.01.2022 NGO's and humanitarian groups are often some of the first on the scene to disasters. Unfortunately, they generally don't get a lot of funding and can get sidelined in the response; which is far from ideal. The Humanitarian Advisory Group (HAG) exists to reverse this from happening; they aim to put local humanitarian representatives in control and provide the resources they need to lead the disaster on the ground. HAG Director, Kate Sutton, joins Renae on the #DoingDisastersD...ifferently podcast this week to discuss. https://www.buzzsprout.com//5665603-a-humanitarian-aid-per
17.01.2022 The first step in disaster resilience is really understanding your business. What disasters could affect your operations? What things would stop you from operating? Would you know what to do if you heard a flood or fire was on its way? Do you know how a power outage would affect your operations? Look at your customer chains and your supply chains. If you can identify the critical elements you need to keep doing business, you’ve started building a resilient business.
17.01.2022 It’s official, Wednesdays are soon to become disaster resilience day for small businesses across Australia (and potentially the world). Why? Well, we’re now in a new era of more frequent, compound disasters. This means every small business is at risk of not surviving a disaster.... But we need small businesses to stay in business. So, we’re leading a movement to help every small business owner better prepare for disasters. And it starts with understanding disasters. Download our FREE Disaster Checklist for Small Business Owners here. https://corporate2community.com/what-if-wednesday/ #doingdisastersdifferently #corporate2community #communityresilience #businessresilience
15.01.2022 Recovery from disasters comes in all shapes and sizes. Social recovery is fundamental for communities including re-establishing connections or creating new connections based on a shared experience. Daniel Aldrich is a global expert in building social capital. At C2C we aspire to create programs to support communities that build social capital.... Because when it comes to community recovery it is driven by people - not bridges or buildings but people. We need a bigger focus on social capital and building community connections before, during and after disasters. We'd love to hear how connected your community is?
12.01.2022 Has your community had to 'reimagine paradise?' Jennifer Gray Thompson, from Rebuild NorthBay Foundation, joins us on the podcast this week where she shares her approach to rebuilding communities through disaster and while 'normal' is not coming back, a new paradise can be imagined and created. Have a listen - it's a goodie.
10.01.2022 Nothing brings us more joy than celebrating the match of a business in need with one that can help! Mongarlowe Gourmet were hit by drought, bush fires and floods in late 2019. As are a relatively new social enterprise in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales that grows and produces unique gourmet products, they were well on their way to profiting from their business when disaster struck. We matched them with Grace Newman from Free Folk Agency who volunteered to help them... restructure and evolve their social media, marketing and business strategy to help them back on their feet. Can't wait to see the positive impact of this match over the coming months!

03.01.2022 The issues of disaster risk governance identifying, acknowledging, planning and acting on disaster risk have come into sharp focus this year. Many disasters can be avoided or prevented if there are disaster risk reduction strategies in place to manage and reduce existing levels of risk and to avoid the creation of new risk. What that amounts to is ‘good disaster risk governance’. There are clear actions we can take as countries, communities, individuals and businesses ... to improve how we manage disaster risk in order to reduce it. Join @Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience and @corporate2community as we explore the topic ‘Good disaster risk governance: perspectives from business leaders’ in recognition of International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction. When: 2.00pm-3.30pm (AEDT), 21 October 2020 Where: Delivered via Zoom Cost: Free REGISTER HERE: https://bit.ly/30XWOes

02.01.2022 This is a good short read for councils and communities about if concurrent disasters are the new normal? At C2C we refer to them as compound disasters but it's basically when communities including local councils are hit by not one (ie drought), not two (ie bushfires) but three (ie COVID-19) and four (ie floods) and more unexpected disruptions. How do communities and local councils cope and thrive when they are still dealing with one impact yet there is more to come.... In the article there's a link to a webinar I attended - a good view. As disasters are changing it's clear our preparedness and resilience to disasters need to change too. https://www.icleioceania.org//concurrent-disasters-the-new
