22.01.2022 As I was on my usual daily walk along Balmoral Beach I was delighted to see cafes and restaurants open with up to 10 patrons seated at a time. This got me thinking about all the other restaurants that have decided to stay closed because it is not worth opening for 10 people. Many people were so excited to be able to go out again to a restaurant I am sure not because they were hungry but because this represented a return to some semblance of a normal life. I am wondering wha...t the long term good will is for those restaurants that have opened from this weekend as opposed to those that have decided to stay closed because it is financially not worth their while to open. Whilst I understand money is important, so is customer and community good will and I do hope customers support those restaurants that have decided to open now even though it may not make financial sense to do so. 21.01.2022 Its not true that high tea is a fancy little British business, featuring witty people eating cucumber sandwiches and tiny cakes. No, no. no! That is just called tea. The high doesnt make it fancier. Quite the opposite. High tea features potted meat and soft-cooked eggs, and is what you have when you don't want to bother with a real dinner.

12.01.2022 Silver Linings of the COVID-19 Lockdown During this time of unimaginable pain and suffering there are some silver linings. Most of us are not involved in the care of the sick and dying so there is time for new activities,, hobbies and thoughts. The COVID-19 has really brought to the fore what is really important in life and what is just trivial. Our medical and scientific experts and teachers are at the forefront as well as good leaders. It is hard to find any talk of cele...brities, movie stars or other manufactured people. They are simply not important and wouldn't it lovely if we could keep it that way when all this is over. There is such a sense of unity in the air. When I go for my daily walk or to the supermarket, there really is a feeling that we are all in this together. It seems to have brought us all closer. I notice myself and others saying "hello to strangers and passing a comment or two. I do hope this continues into the future. I love watching parents play with their small children on the beach - the one near me is not closed). I am sure for a lot of families this time in isolation is bringing them closer together. I know that for many, this time is causing untold pain but this article is about the positives. There is time for those of us not directly involved in the pandemic to think. To think about our lives,, the direction we would like to take once the lockdown is over and what we believe in. In the normal hustle and bustle of life, there really isnt time to think about much except today and tomorrow. But now with days, weeks and possibly even months in lockdown, there is plenty of time for our minds to wander. I have been delighting in the innovative things people have been doing both here in Australia and overseas. I love the way people show their appreciation for the medical workers by clapping them at a certain time each day. I love the way musicians play their instruments outside their homes. The way neighbours all stand outside their homes and sing and dance. Not to mention the clever jjokes and short videos that people post on social media about the COVID19. Such clever people to make up these jokes. The human spirit cannot be extinguished. There is time to try new things For me I have been cooking more, learnt to Zoom with my grandson, held my first webinar and am exercising every day. All positives. I am sure a lot of other people are doing much greater things with their time such as learning a new language online. Whatever you are doing with your time, make it constructive and enjoy this down time The rat race will start again before we know it. Stay well, look after yourself and those around you. See more

12.01.2022 Irrespective of what you think of Andrew Twiggy Forrest and his wonderful philanthropy, bringing China's Victorian Consul General, Zhou Long to the press conference without letting Mr Hunt know in advance was poor etiquette.

12.01.2022 It is disappointing to see the frenetic rush of people buying up massive amounts of toilet paper in fear that it will become scarce because of the coronavirus outbreak. Authorities are suggesting we all stock up on 2 weeks of necessities such as toilet paper, medications, and food staples. The images of some people filling their car with toilet paper just shows greed and lack of consideration for other people. Then there are images of people actually physically fighting to get some toilet paper. If everyone just bought a little more than usual, there would be plenty to go around. But the way some people have bought it means that other people are missing out. But even lower than stocking up massive amounts of toilet paper are the people who are advertising a single roll for up to $1,000.

10.01.2022 Dorm Etiquette for Students Dorm etiquette for students is important in Australia with so many students now coming from Asian countries and India. The following guidelines should help you navigate this sometimes tricky environment: 1. Keep your part of the room neat, tidy and clean. Your mum is not here to tidy up after you so you now have to do it yourself. You may think this is a waste of time and is not what you want to be doing, but it is just something that has to be ...done. 2. Be friendly towards your room mates. You dont need to be best friends but it is going to make the experience of room sharing much nicer if you are on friendly terms. 3. If you borrow some clothes or other items from your room-mate, always return them in the same condition they were lent to you i.e. clean and in perfect condition and return them very promptly. 4. Allow your room mates some privacy. Dont always be asking them questions and intrude in their private life. 5. Keep the noise down if they need to study. If you follow the above guidelines, your time as a student in Australia will be much more fun. See more

05.01.2022 Glasses fogging up when wearing a face mask? If you are having trouble with your glasses fogging up when wearing a face mask, here are 3 suggestions from Dan Formosa, a designer with extensive experience in creating medical masks, to stop the problem. ABSORB THE MOISTURE One solution is to create an absorbent layer between your nose and your eyes to effectively soak up any moisture before it can fog up your glasses. A folded-up piece of tissue paper could do the trick. This w...as an idea that circulated around Japan, where people commonly wear masks throughout the year to reduce the spread of illnesses. The problem here is that it can be a little annoying to try to keep the tissue in place, and it may cause you to keep touching your face to readjust it or keep it from falling off. If you really want to keep the tissue in place, Formosa proposes uses medical tape to keep it firmly stuck to your nose, but he admits this might be awkward. You just dont want to put yourself in a situation where youre putting yourself more at risk, he says. USE A METAL NOSECLIP In medical masks, like the N95, there is sometimes a metal nose clip that allows you to create a better seal around your nose to prevent moisture from entering or leaving the mask. If you have a homemade mask, you can try to create a similar mechanism by incorporating a metal piece that can be adjusted to the shape of your nose. Some people have been using pipe cleaners or paperclips. Formosa recommends using the metal fasteners that are typically used to keep papers together in a paper folder. You can incorporate these into some DIY mask designs for a better fit at the top. However, it is important to be very careful here, since these metal pieces will be very close to your eyes and could cause a serious accident if they get dislodged. CREATE SPACE FOR AIR Another solution is to allow air to escape from the side of the mask or the cheek area, rather than the top. The downside of this approach is that it creates a lot less coverage, which makes the mask less effective at catching droplets from your mouth and preventing them from landing on the ground, or the person youre interacting with at the grocery store. But if you create a mask that is strategically designed to let air billow out and escape from the sides, it is less likely to come out from the top and interfere with your glasses. In Japan, for instance, the Metropolitan Police Department suggests folding the top quarter of your mask down, so air doesnt escape close to your lenses.
