16.01.2022 Vinnies would like to assure the community that every dollar raised for the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal will be used to support the people impacted by the fires. Vi...nnies will not, and has never kept funds from disaster appeals for any other work or cause. The Vinnies Bushfire Appeal has raised $12.5 million to support people impacted by bushfires in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, SA and the ACT. 08.01.2022 Bishop Brian Mascord has released new directives, effective Saturday 21 March, for parishes as a result of the changing Government protocols dealing with COVID-...19. https://www.dow.org.au/covid-19 From the statement: "After considering the recent advice from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and direction from the Federal and NSW Governments, the following measures will be in place, effective Saturday 21 March 2020: - No public Masses will be celebrated in the Diocese of Wollongong. - All faithful in the diocese will be dispensed from the obligation to physically attend Mass on Sundays. However, parishioners can honour their Sunday obligation by participating in a time of prayer within the home, reading the Scriptures, or watching Mass on television/online (canon 87 1 , canon 1248 2). - Mass will continue to be said privately by priests throughout the diocese on behalf of the faithful on a daily basis. - Churches will, as far as possible, remain open for private prayer." **** We have created a page on our website dedicated to the latest guidance from the diocese outlining its role in preventing the spread of the virus in our communities. The diocese will always act in accordance with the guidelines of health authorities and update its advice as necessary. https://www.dow.org.au/covid-19

07.01.2022 MESSAGE FROM BISHOP BRIAN ON THE BLESSING OF ASH WEDNESDAY ASHES My Sisters and Brothers in Christ In early January, I wrote to the faithful of the dioces...e at a time when many within our communities were still fighting the bushfires or trying to come to terms with the feelings of loss and grief associated with the bushfires. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to visit a number of communities throughout our diocese in the Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee and Wollondilly regions, seeing the destruction firsthand. Importantly, these trips gave me the chance to simply be with, pray with and listen to the many stories from shocked, impacted, overwhelmed and brave people. There have been incredible outpourings of support for the communities impacted by these fires. I continue to be heartened by the stories of unity and generosity that continue to bring people together in the aftermath of the fires, from within the impacted communities, from our diocesan agencies, our parishes and wider communities who have sought to generously donate money, time, goods and services to help those impacted and to help communities rebuild. As a way of continuing to prayerfully show solidarity with each other, we have collected ashes from areas representing the diocesan regions ravaged by fire. I have blessed them this morning at St Francis Xavier Cathedral and have invited my clergy to add them to the ashes of their own community to be used in Ash Wednesday celebrations. I trust that they will be, as always, a powerful symbol of the start of our Lenten journey, but particularly this year, a powerful symbol of our journeying with others in our diocese, especially those amongst us in the recovery phase. Yours in Christ +BM

04.01.2022 PASTORAL STATEMENT BY BISHOP BRIAN ON TEMPORARY MASS CHANGES AS A RESULT OF CORONAVIRUS | *UPDATED* My Sisters and Brothers in Christ As you are aware, the spre...ad of coronavirus, COVID19, continues to present challenges to health authorities around the world, including here in Australia. As a result of the increased spread of coronavirus and what we know about its transmission, many dioceses around the world and closer to home have temporarily altered certain practices in the Mass to ensure the health and safety of parishioners. With this precedentand with the wellbeing of all parishioners of our diocese in mindI am issuing the following directives (effective immediately) to all clergy, religious and the lay faithful in the Diocese of Wollongong: - In those parishes and communities in the diocese where holy Communion is distributed under both kinds, this practice will cease. Communion of the Precious Blood will be for the celebrant only. - Given that one of the easiest ways to transmit a virus is by the transmission of saliva, Communion will be received only in the hand. - Clergy and parishioners are not to shake hands during the sign of peace, but should acknowledge each other at the exchange with the words, Peace be with you. - All ministers of holy Communion (both ordinary and extraordinary) are to use hand sanitisers before the distribution of holy Communion commences, and are not to physically touch anyone in the act of blessing. - Holy water fonts are to be emptied or removed. These directives are informed by the latest advice from the Australian Government Department of Health which states that everyone should practise good hygiene to protect against coronavirus infection, including avoiding close contact with others, such as touching. These directives will remain in place until the need for them ceases. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further advice as necessary. In the meantime, everyone is encouraged to monitor local and national health advice, and to practise good hygiene, including washing hands often with soap and water. Please join me in praying for all those who have passed away or been affected by coronavirus; for the women and men working tirelessly to care for those affected; and for the development of a vaccine to keep us all safe. Yours in Christ Most Rev Brian G Mascord DD Bishop of Wollongong 3 March 2020
