25.01.2022 Every day when my watering system comes on we have up to 5 birds come for a shower. Their calls are so happy!

25.01.2022 Neurons are beautiful and extremely complicated. This is a single neural connection. A single neuron can have hundreds of these connections each. The experiences you have and the way you think changes these connections and grows new ones throughout our lives.... Massive complexity of interconnections is what makes you who you are. 24.01.2022 The @cortexbraintech Team spent most of yesterday being interviewed by three TV stations and ABC radio! (Australia's national broadcast network) It was very cool to be able to share how we are going to help people with our technology. We also announced that we are recruiting volunteers for trials of our headset. If you go to www.cortexbraintech.com you can sign up to be kept up to date on our progress and be involved in trialling our tech!

23.01.2022 Yesterday I spoke with a representative from Auticon Australia about finding work to support my family while I build @cortexbraintech Auticon are very invested in providing full-time employment for #autistic people in adapted workplaces. They see our skills in #patternrecognition #attentiontodetail and #puzzlesolving as a major asset! #Auticon was founded less than five years ago in Germany by family members of autistic children who saw the potential of autistic workers but ...also the barriers that needed to be overcome to make workplaces #autismfriendly Their #profitforpurpose business has proved to be so successful that #auticon are now based in 7 countries including Australia, UK and Canada This is such an amazing achievement Search Auticon if you have diagnosed autism and you would be interested in exploring the employment they offer! @auticon.us --- What autism-positive work environment would be complete without fidget toys?! #autism #autismatwork #fidgettoys #stim #neurodiversity Disclaimer: Cortex will not take payment to promote others. We repost work by people and organisations we truly love If you want us to share your great business, photos, ideas or achievements please DM us!

23.01.2022 Bridge Under Starlit Sky

21.01.2022 I want everyone to know about an awesome social enterprise called #Auticon that exists to help people with #autism find full-time roles in the #IT industry. I first heard about Auticon from my treating psychiatrist who suggested I apply for a role with them as they recently expanded into Australia. I was honestly impressed with them from the moment I looked into the history of Auticon and read that the company was founded by #parents who wanted to create something to help the...ir autistic child to work in a job that catered to the unique strengths of autistic people. I completely understand that motivation since I founded Cortex to help my daughter. I have been through the Auticon suitability testing and while it wasn't easy I felt very understood and respected by the Auticon staff. I believe that they genuinely do what they do to help people on the spectrum. Pending a suitable business whose needs suit my abilities and some pre-employment training I have been offered a full-time Auticon consultant role! This will make such a positive difference to my family and will allow Cortex to progress much faster because there are some things that just cannot be done without money to pay for them! I would honestly be posting this whether I had been offered a role or not. Because I love what Auticon stand for and the Auticon Australia team showed such respect to myself and the other candidates in the group zoom eligibility sessions. I have been through a lot of interviews over my 20 years in research and this was the first one I have ever enjoyed I would strongly suggest any autistic person with an interest and ability with computers, coding and/or mathematics look into whether there is an Auticon office in your country!

21.01.2022 Becoming aware of your internal state and making small changes can make a big difference! I absolutely love the images made by @lizandmollie They remind me of how much I love science. Biochemistry of the heart and soul

19.01.2022 This is a tiny part of the complexity inside all of us. This pathway took many decades of research for scientists to be able to understand. As a scientist I find it beautiful and awe-inspiring.

16.01.2022 As we watch in horror #Trump every day seems more like the #facist #dictator #ViceChancellorSuter from #vforvendetta Tear gassing and beating peaceful protestors and journalists just so he can cross the road for a photo opportunity. #blacklivesmatter #votehimout

16.01.2022 The colours we see are not the colour of the object we are seeing but are actually the wavelengths of light that are reflected and not absorbed

15.01.2022 I really hate trying to smile naturally for photos. If I think about it too much my smile just looks wrong I had to get our daughter to make funny faces behind my wife so that I could smile normally.

15.01.2022 Tomorrow at 4pm Australian time Cortex is online pitching with 10 other Queensland healthtech startups at the Australian Health Accelerator (AHx) Demo Day event. See the Cortex profile for the link to join the event!

14.01.2022 This is what having a great idea feels to me. A moment when a bright beam of an idea like a beam of sunlight arcs through the air and hits you right between the eyes. From that moment on you can no longer think the way you did before and from the first idea others spark around it.

14.01.2022 We had our regular individual learning plan (ILP) meeting with our daughter's teacher and the head of special education this week. Seeing this on the wall of the classroom and hearing the teacher describe our daughter as warm, caring, putting a lot of effort into her learning and genuinely liked by her classmates for herself and not for masking her autism and ADHD fills me with happiness and hope! But there is still a long way to go in acceptance and understanding of autism a...nd other conditions that affect our way of seeing and interacting with the world. Such a difference this year compared to last year where our daughter's teacher decided that her autism and ADHD were "naughtiness" that should be punished by for example, separating her from a budding friendship with another autistic kid in her class. It broke our daughters heart to be lied to when the teacher told her she could "earn" a place back with her friend if she was "good enough" but had no intention of ever letting her sit with the friend again. My wife and I contacted the head of special education and the school principal to discuss what was happening and they both agreed that punishing our daughter for obvious and documented aspects of her #autism and #ADHD was unacceptable. The teacher was told to alter her behaviour (which she got furious about). The teacher left the school soon after. I am very much hoping that the world continues to improve but also determined as heck to advocate for my daughter whenever my wife and I need to. What have you had to do to advocate for your child?

13.01.2022 Kitchen Science! All you need is a bowl of water, some paper towel and some carrot tops. Our daughter has been very excited to look at her plants every morning when she wakes up and every afternoon when she gets home from school.

13.01.2022 Queensland researchers are developing a headset that aims to retrain the brain of people with mental health disorders. Its a close cause to Cortex Brainwave T...echnologies founder, Casey Pflugers heart, whose daughter suffers from autism and ADHD. It trains your brain and reroots the connections that arent connected properly, or if there is too many connections it helps to pair them down so theyre more efficient - Founder, Casey Pfluger. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS
