25.01.2022 Corumbene Care’s activity snippets.. Over the past few weeks residents have been enjoying a variety of activities at Corumbene Care. One of our ladies who loves a challenge has just completed her biggest jigsaw to date, and is currently working on her next challenge. Residents enjoyed celebrating their birthday with a High Tea, and Lachlan residents enjoyed a special High Tea last week with milkshakes and lots of yummy cakes to try.... Last week saw the return of some of our wonderful volunteers. They will be offering small group activities for an hour and half at this stage each week. Much to their delight, small groups of residents were able to enjoy poker, craft and art classes again. The Ukulele Group continues to meet every week and the group are now practicing two songs You are My Sunshine and Crystal Chandeliers.

19.01.2022 ABC Visits Corumbene Two weeks ago the Derwent Valley Strength and Balance Group received a visit from an ABC news crew as part of a story about health in the Derwent Valley region. The Team spent an hour filming the group exercising and followed up with interviews with 2 members of the Group, Fiona and Nita. They both did a wonderful job! The segment goes to air on the 27th of August at 7pm- we can’t wait to see how it turns out.

19.01.2022 Dogs of Corumbene Some staff regularly bring their doggies in during their day off to see some of our dog loving residents. Little Charli Mae, a Shar Pei X is a regular at Corumbene and loves the attention of pats, cuddles, treats and as mentioned during Velma’s profile, a rocking lullaby!... Charli has her favourite residents, including Mavene who is often in the Kentish lounge, just waiting for Charli to run direct to her. Some other favourites of Charli’s is Basil, Chris, Kaye, John, Doris, Valda and it has to be mentioned, her fascination with our Maintenance Officer, Dave, is extremely charming. Charli also fell in love with Una in the Village next door. Charli is a smart little (growing) dog, almost 6 months old. Also visiting Corumbene, and hopefully will become regular, is Ronnie, the South African Boerboel mentioned on our Facebook page recently. In these photos, Ronnie was 9 weeks of age, and look at the size of him and his beautiful paws! Next is Penelope, who is a Chugg (Chihuahua X Pug) who is the definition of pocket rocket. A fast, excitable little puppy, she had her first visit as a grown up dog recently and pleasantly surprised her owner with her loving nature toward our residents. We also know there are other dogs that visit their loved ones, and we appreciate the dedicated family members who bring them in. A huge thank you for continuing to do this. We also have two volunteer Japanese Spitz, Kobi and Misty, who love to visit the residents, but unfortunately due to current restrictions we have to wait a bit longer to see them with their lovely owner.

17.01.2022 Corumbene Care celebrates spring with a visit from Trippy the lamb Residents and staff at Corumbene Care had the opportunity to meet a little lamb called Trippy. Fiona Hume kindly brought the little lamb to visit the residents, and they were delighted to have the chance to pat, cuddle, or bottle-fed this gorgeous little creature. The residents also thought it was so cute that Trippy was wearing a nappy. What a wonderful way to celebrate spring. A big thank you to Fiona for organising this wonderful surprise for the residents, it was very much appreciated.

15.01.2022 International Cat Day On Friday 7th August, one of our staff brought their cat, Bella, to visit with residents for International Cat Day or World Cat Day which is normally celebrated on 8th August each year. Bella is a beautiful, smoochy cat, but unfortunately did not want to come out of her cage on the day. She was however more than happy to travel around and visit within her cage, on a trolley! ... We thank you for visiting our residents Bella, and hope you’ll come back again.

15.01.2022 Cards from New Norfolk Primary School At New Norfolk Primary School, the 2/3 and Prep/1 classes have been focussing on acts of kindness as part of our whole school Bridge Builders program. We knew that because of COVID, there were people in our community who could not currently spend time with their friends or loved ones. We wanted to do something to show support and to let people know that we care about them. Our friends at Corumbene welcomed our idea to connect and share k...indness through cards for the residents living there. We hope that everyone enjoys the cards we have made and we look forward to being able to continue connecting and spreading happiness in our community! Love from New Norfolk Primary School x

15.01.2022 Reindeer Games 2020 Following the success of an Ohio Nursing Home having their very first Reindeer Games, a few of the staff got together to recreate it for Corumbene. With so many of our residents wanting to participate, we organised 8 sessions over two days of Reindeer Games. All residents were asked if they wanted to participate, and overall we had an acceptance of over 40 residents to attend which was wonderful. Our Groups were: 1. Gunpowder Gals... 2. The Hot Shots 3. Eagle Eye Shooters 4. Trigger Happy Gals 5. The Blazing Bullets 6. Glamorous Shooters 7. The Danger Rangers 8. Pistol Packin’ Lady’s (plus George) We had some staff come in on their off shifts to help, either by being a reindeer, taking photos and video or helping to re-load the nerf guns. The residents thoroughly enjoyed shooting the reindeers (staff) and their laughter was infectious. We hope this will be a Christmas tradition at Corumbene, it was wonderful to see such delight on all faces, staff and residents, bringing a little joy to each other. A huge thank you to our reindeers, without you it wouldn’t have worked. Also a huge thank you to those that assisted the shooters with reloading guns and assisting where needed. Thank you Wendy, Kristy and Michelle for organising, setting up, creating the forest and organising residents and staff alike.

13.01.2022 Resident’s Christmas Party Friday the 18th of December at 2.00pm the residents attended their Christmas Party held at Corumbene Care. COVID-19 restrictions met that residents celebrated in their respective dining rooms, each dining room was decorated for Christmas. Damien Jacobs CEO welcomed everyone to the Christmas Party and wished the residents a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Residents enjoyed afternoon tea which consisted of scones, jam and cream, white Christmas..., fruit mince pies and mixed warm savouries to select from, and there was also a drinks trolley service. Dorothy, one of our lovely resident’s, cut the Christmas cake on behalf of all the residents and staff at Corumbene Care and residents got to enjoy the cake later. Residents were delighted to have a visit from Santa, and with his Santa helper gave out Christmas gifts to residents in each dining room. Big thank you to the Leisure and Lifestyle team, the Hospitality team and the catering team for their hard work ensuring that the residents had a lovely time, also Santa and his helper, volunteers Laurence and Ross, the Ladies Auxiliary for the beautiful Christmas cake, and all the wonderful Christmas gifts for the residents, it was very much appreciated. On behalf of the Corumbene Care Management and staff we wish residents and their family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

11.01.2022 Christmas in July at Corumbene Care On Saturday the 25th of July, the residents at Corumbene Care celebrated Christmas in July. There was a hive of activity as the Leisure and Lifestyle team members were busy decorating all the dining room tables in a Christmas theme complete with Christmas serviettes, placemats and bon-bons. Meanwhile, in the kitchen the fabulous catering team were preparing a delicious Christmas themed luncheon of Roast Turkey and roast vegetables with pavl...ova for dessert. While the residents were enjoying their luncheon they were offered a drinks trolley service which was well received by all. Big thank you to all the staff who made the Christmas in July so special for the residents.

11.01.2022 Quilted Blankets We are very lucky at Corumbene, especially as one of our residents’ daughters, Marguerite, and her friends, Marian, Andrea and the Care Quilters Group that have commenced making quilts for each of our residents. Yes, you read that correct, a handmade quilt for ALL Corumbene residents. This is how this lovely idea commenced:... Packing up Mum's linen cupboard I found strips of pink and blue sheeting squares. At my weekly craft group I sit alongside a remarkable group of lady quilters. I spoke of my desire to have a quilt made for my mum out of the pink and blue sheeting squares I had found, and it was done for me. One day Mum's beautiful quilt grew legs. When it was found on another resident's bed an idea was born. Bringing handmade quilts to Corumbene, it has been lovely to gift the quilts to residents, who have always asked me "how much do I pay?" The response is always the same, it’s our gift to you. This week, with the newest quilts being presented, one of the residents exclaimed bloody Hell! How lovely! when she chose her quilt from the group of quilts currently available. Another resident, Maggie stroked her quilt and raised her hands in prayer, very grateful when she was told this quilt is for you, it is all yours and we will get your name put onto it. Finally, during this visit of donating quilts, the final one went to a gentleman sitting in his extra warm room, watching television, and he smiled heartily when receiving this wonderful gift.

08.01.2022 Corumbene Care’s The Four Strings Ukulele Club Over the past few months The Four Strings Ukulele Club have been very busy playing their ukuleles and learning new songs. Members of the choir have come to join the group, and have provided the backing for the ukulele players, which is very much appreciated. The group hope you like a song that was recorded at our last get together called You Are My Sunshine.

07.01.2022 Harmony Day In March 2020 the Corumbene Health & Wellbeing team had organised to celebrate our workplace cultural diversity during National Harmony week. The team planned to host ‘A Taste of Harmony’ event on 25th of March, however these plans were unfortunately required to be postponed due to COVID. Today we were pleased to host ‘A Taste of Harmony 2.0’ albeit several months post National Harmony Week. We encouraged all staff to bring a dish either from their national back...ground or a dish they felt connected to and were overwhelmed with the vast variety of dishes from around the world. With a vast array of food bought in from all areas of the globe one of the most standout dishes brought in by one of our Nepalese staff members was ‘Jeri’ a sweet, deep-fried syrupy batter like thing. It’s hard to explain but absolutely delicious! Thank you Sabina for bringing my attention to this wonderful food! Akhila took the time and effort to turn up in her beautiful traditional outfit and looked absolutely stunning, thank you for taking the time to do this. The event was an excellent opportunity for staff to take a moment to pause from the everyday life/work grab a bite to eat and reflect on how each and everyone one of us brings something unique not only to Corumbene but our own communities. I feel privileged to work with such a diverse group of beautiful and caring people each and every day and I thank everyone who attended and showed support for the event. #ATOH20 Alyce

07.01.2022 Halloween at Corumbene The Health & Wellbeing Team put together a Halloween Event, held on Friday, 30th October at Corumbene where staff could dress up, and a parade through each area of Corumbene occurred. Some members of the HWB Team made yummy pumpkin soup, but disaster struck when at least two of the brews, were dropped and unable to be brought into share with the staff.... The ones that did make it were very yummy and appreciated by staff having their lunch break. Thank you again to the HWB Team for organising a wonderful and inclusive event, for the L&L team for putting Halloween decorations throughout the home, and for all staff that participated by dressing up for the occasion. Thank you to volunteer Ross for some of the wonderful photos.

07.01.2022 High Tea in the Linkway Café During the month of June residents have been invited to attend High Tea in the Linkway Café each Friday morning. Today residents could choose from chocolate and/or jam roll, lamingtons, slices, muffins and a selection of yummy chocolate biscuits, and this was enjoyed with a cappuccino, hot chocolate or a nice hot pot of tea.... It was a great opportunity to catch up with each other and have a chat over a cuppa. Residents were treated to a performance by our ukulele maestro, Elizer.

07.01.2022 Christmas Church Service at Corumbene Care On Wednesday the 16th of December, the Christmas Church Service was held in the Main Lounge at the home. Reverend Celia Hooker and Gayleen Meurant took the service. Members of the Ukulele Club and the Corumbene Choir were also in attendance and performed two Christmas carols Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Both groups have enjoyed rehearsing with Leisure and Lifestyle team members Elizer and Lynette leading up to thi...s their very first public performance. The oldest member of the Ukulele Club is Una who is one hundred and one year’s young and thoroughly enjoys playing the ukulele and being part of the group. Reverend Celia Hooker and Gayleen wished the residents and the staff at Corumbene Care a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

05.01.2022 AFL Footy Grand Final On Saturday evening the 24th of October residents attended the AFL Footy Grand Final in the Multi-Purpose Room. Leisure and Lifestyle team members Lynette and Debbie decorated the room with balloons and streamers of the two grand final teams Richmond and Geelong. Each resident had their favourite team and hoping that they would be victorious, but there were no surprises who Lynette was barracking for in the yellow and black! Once the drinks and food wer...e served everyone settled down to enjoy the game and the atmosphere which was intense as each score changed leading to a nail-biting finish. Finally, there can only be one winner so congratulations to Richmond, it was a great evening full of fun and good-hearted teasing.

03.01.2022 Corumbene’s 54th Birthday Celebrations On Friday 18th September, Corumbene celebrated its 54th Birthday. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we had to do things a little differently this year, and whilst the Auxiliary were not able to come on site and provide their wonderful catering, our in house catering team did a marvellous job. The Auxiliary provided a gift for each resident which was gratefully accepted. The Leisure & Lifestyle Team provided impressive table settings in three... different areas of the home to help facilitate the social distancing rules, and helped serve the food along with our catering, services and care staff. Thank you all. Valmai, on behalf of the Auxiliary, cut the cake over on side 2, and Una on behalf of residents cut the cake on side 1. As we couldn’t have our distinguished guests on site, we were very grateful to receive video messages from; Governor, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC; Premier Peter Gutwein; Craig Farrell MLC, President of Corumbene Auxiliary Irene Barnes and Prayer by Rev. Celia Hooker. Some of our residents also passed along their birthday wishes with their beautiful smiles. Thank you all for making this a very memorable birthday.

02.01.2022 More Quilts for Residents A sad week with the loss of my Mum Pat was replaced with joy as Liz and I gifted four more quilts to residents at Corumbene. I like to think my Mum's legacy lives on with every bed that gets covered with its own quilt of many colours. Earl thought he had won the raffle. 02.01.2022 Residents enjoy a Garden Tour as part of Seniors Week celebrations On Friday the 16th of October residents enjoyed a guided tour of the grounds and the beautiful gardens at Corumbene Care. The garden tour was conducted by Corumbene Care’s gardener Imco. Residents had the opportunity to learn and ask questions about the plants and flowers that are coming into full spring bloom in the facility gardens. Imco shared his love and knowledge of gardening with residents and staff whi...ch was quite comprehensive. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning, a big thank you to Imco for taking the time out of his busy day to give us a tour and we are looking forward to the next garden tour. Also thank you to our volunteer Ross who helped capture on camera a most enjoyable morning.

02.01.2022 Introducing Velma Velma grew up in the Derwent Valley. She lived on a farm in Moogara as a child, then, when she married her husband, Sid, they moved to a house in New Norfolk where Velma lived for 70 years. Velma kept the family and house running while Sid worked at Boyer (Norske Skog). Velma has always been a social butterfly and family oriented. Velma and Sid had three children, now has 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and a couple of great-great grandchildren.... Velma enjoys cooking and is famous for her cream puffs and scallop pies. Velma moved into Corumbene in January this year and has settled in wonderfully. It is Velma’s birthday today, and she is 91 years young. Velma is a lovely addition to Corumbene, always has a lovely smile for everybody. On Friday, one of the staff visited with their dog, Charli Mae. Charli often comes in to visit residents and this particular day fell in love with Velma. Charli jumped on Velma’s lap (with Velma’s permission) and was rocked by Velma while singing Charli a lovely lullaby. Charli did not want to leave! Velma, from all at Corumbene, we wish you a lovely birthday today and want to say how wonderful it is that you are part of our Corumbene Community.

01.01.2022 Staff 8 Ball Competition During the last couple of months the Corumbene staff held an 8 ball competition. Thank you to Hayley and Kristy for setting up each round’s roster of players and to all the staff who participated. While all of us didn’t make it through to the finals, most of the games were very close. Every game was well attended by residents and staff on their break, and a lot of commentary was had.... In the end, it came down to Rhys and Darren in the final. I’m told it was also a very close game, both of them ended up on the black, with Rhys being the first to pot it and win the game. It wasn’t all bad for us losers though, as each loser received a chocolate bar! Thank you also to the Health & Wellbeing Team who assisted with giving out the chocolates and organising prizes. Congratulations to Rhys, and thank you Deanne for presentation of trophy and box of chocolates. Time for another competition, what game will it be next time????

01.01.2022 Puppies Visit Corumbene On Friday 10th July, we were very lucky to have Tenille bring two of her South African Boerboel puppies in for a visit. These dogs are a Mastiff type breed, and the males can grow up to 80kg. The two puppies that visited were boys, and the brown one is called Ronnie by his (soon to be) puppy parents. The other little boy, we hope will be named Boris when he finally chooses his forever home. Boris is lighter in colour in his face than other Boerboel’s a...nd this makes him very cute. Boris was also born without most of his tail. These puppies were 5 weeks old when they visited, and already big puppies. They were very sleepy during their visit as we were told they’d just been fed. Tenille will bring them in again to the delight of all that had a cuddle. We also asked that Tenille if she would bring in one of her adult Boerboel’s in the future, so we look forward to those visits as well. Thank you Tenille.
