Interplast are a fantastic organisation that send volunteer medical staff to developing countries in the Asia Pacific region to provide free life-changing reconstructive surgery. 22.01.2022 Nexus Hospitals would like to congratulate Associate Professor Julian Rait, co-founder of Nexus facility Manningham Day Procedure Centre. Associate Professor Rait has been honoured with an OAM for his services to ophthalmology and overseas aid. Since 1987 he has helped countless people whilst volunteering as a surgeon in developing countries including Vietnam and Nepal. He has also published approximately 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and supervised over 20 clinical trials of new glaucoma therapies. We are extremely proud of Associate Professor Rait and all of his incredible achievements!

Every year in Australia skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers, with 980000 new cases of Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma requiring treatment or surgery. A further 13000 people are diagnosed every year with Melanoma, giving Australia one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. 18.01.2022 Corneal Cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus has been added to the Medicare Benefits Schedule from the 1st May, greatly improving affordability of this procedure. This welcome funding supports first line treatment of progressive keratoconus, and it is likely that suitable patients who undergo timely cross-linking will have more successful visual outcomes, and avoid more invasive treatments such as corneal transplantation.

Staff brought in some amazing dishes which highlighted their culinary skills - they are so much more than great nurses! The evening was shared with partners and children and it was a great opportunity to catch up and have a good laugh!

08.01.2022 Melanoma is now the most common cancer in Australians aged 15 to 39. Researchers from the University of Queensland have found that freckles and moles appearing on the iris indicates a higher risk of melanoma, particularly in people under 40. Dr. Laino says Its very easy to look for iris pigmented lesions, and we hope that these findings will help doctors identify those people who may be at increased risk of melanoma and need a skin check.
