23.01.2022 Article’s tags: Community News - http://www.cosv.org.au/topic.php?lid=5 http://www.cosv.org.au/index.php?article=828 With a heavy heart due to the current dire situation in Eretz Yisrael, the Rabbinical Council of Victoria (RCV) and Council of Orthodox Synagogues of Victoria (COSV) have joined to call on all Shuls and communities to increase in their Torah, Tefilla and Tzedaka over the coming weekend.... Firstly, we request that the members of all communities increase their Tzedaka contributions before candle lighting on Erev Shabbat Additionally we are asking that in every shul: The following chapters of Tehilim - 20, 121, 124 - be said at each of the tefillot on Shabbat Special prayers be said for the safety of Tzahal and all of Am Yisrael living in Eretz Yisrael. All Rabbis dedicate their sermons to the current situation and where possible a special shiur also so dedicated might be arranged, perhaps before or after mincha. With prayers and hopes for a swift and lasting solution to the dire circumstances facing our brethren in the Holy Land Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant, President RCV/ORA Isaac Teller, President COSV

13.01.2022 The Rabbinical Council (our sister body) has declared "It's no mitzvah to get drunk on Purim". Here is their Media Release: With the approach of Purim, a festival which celebrates the victory of the Jewish nation over our adversaries, the RCV wishes to remind the community of its obligations in relation to the Mitzvot of Purim, specifically: Hearing the Megilla (Scroll of Esther);... Sending Mishloach Manot (gifts of food); Giving Matanot Laevyonim (charity to the poor); and Having a Seudah (Purim meal) The RCV is also mindful that there are those in the community who, in the name of Jewish Law encourage people to become intoxicated on this day. RCV President, Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant said, Jewish law makes it abundantly clear that drinking alcohol in a manner that threatens ones health and well-being, or the health and well-being of other members of the community, or makes one prone to behaviour which brings embarrassment and disrepute to individuals or the community in general, is completely and utterly forbidden. In addition, the providing of alcohol to those underage is not only inappropriate, it is illegal, said Rabbi Kluwgant. The RCV wishes the entire community a happy and safe Purim.
