17.01.2022 If your business is in the building and construction industry, or if you provide cleaning or courier services and paid contractors for these services, your Taxa...ble payments annual report (TPAR) is due by 28 August You'll need to include the ABN, name and total amount you've paid to your contractors for the year. We use info from your TPAR to help pre-fill individual (sole trader) contractor tax returns, check contractor GST registrations and make sure ABNs on invoices are correct. 17.01.2022 Keep an eye on your myGov inbox this tax time! Most people will be accessing their income statement (previously called a ‘payment summary’) through our online... services in myGov. If your myGov account is linked to our online services, we’ll let you know once your employer has made your income statement ‘tax ready’ - then, it can be used to do your tax return. Remember, many employers have until 31 July to do this. Lodge through an agent? No problem. Get in touch with them as usual they’ll have access to this info too. Find more info at www.ato.gov.au//Working-as/Accessing-your-payment-summary/

06.01.2022 Calling all tradies! Brush up on the deductions you can claim this tax time. You can claim the cost of travel while working, including trips between sites.... You generally can’t claim the cost of driving from home to work, except in limited circumstances. You can claim the cost of protective clothes you’re required to wear (eg steel-capped boots). You can’t claim a deduction for plain clothes (eg t-shirt, jeans) even if your boss tells you to wear them. You can claim the cost of tools or equipment you’re required to buy for work. If you also use your tools or equipment for private purposes, you can’t claim a deduction for that portion of use. You can claim the work-related portion of your phone expenses if you have to make calls or send texts for work. If you’re a builder, plumber, sparkie or mechanic (or know someone who is!) find even more info at ato.gov.au/occupations

02.01.2022 Something’s different this year Instead of a payment summary, you might receive an ‘income statement’. So what does that mean for you at tax time? If you us...e a tax agent, you don’t need to do anything; they’ll have access to the info so they can lodge your tax return. If you lodge your own return, you can access your income statement by logging into our online services through myGov. Top tip: Wait until your employer marks your info as ‘tax ready’ in myGov before you lodge (they should get it done before 31 July 2019). Your other info will be pre-filled in your return by mid-August. Find out more at www.ato.gov.au//Working-as-/Accessing-your-payment-summary
