25.01.2022 I have contemplated writing this post for a while now...asking myself what is my motive, what do I want to achieve.....and I think it's because many only get to see one small part of the racing industry...the winners. Most of the winners are more often the 'professional trainers' and syndicates or big owners....many of who never get to know their horses on an emotional level...in fact after the race often no emotion is shown...it's just another day at the office....for the 8... or 9 winners every meeting there are another 90++ smaller trainers and owners who are just grateful their horse got around safe and they live in hope to maybe finish closer next time. I got into training when my Dad died...I wanted to give my Mum something to be able to look forward to, to get some enjoyment from and as a way of bringing the family together. Sadly now I'm feeling this was never meant to be...the fork in the road is infront of me and I'm not sure if I can continue down this path any longer. For those of you who don't know I have tragically lost two horses in a month. The first was a beautiful horse who came into my stable skin and bones...in terrible shape and completely shut down. Long story short the owner owed me money and agreed to sign him over to me....I loved this horse and when I found the reason why he couldn't run was because of chips in his fetlocks, I went ahead with surgery.....anything that would give him a chance...even if it was just to be my riding horse. Sadly 3 months later and the joints never recovered....the kindest yet most heartbreaking thing to do was say goodbye........ Then a month later my dear Mum's horse, her pride an joy, a horse who she'd been so looking forward to seeing race, had a freak accident in the paddock......he could not be saved. This has broken my poor 90+ Mum's heart and mine........I still cry every night....and every time I walk into my stable and see his empty box........ So if you're still reading..thankyou....the reason why I wanted to share all of this is not for sympathy or pity but because the public only usually sees one side of racing......they don't see the love we have for our horses....the sacrifices we make......the tears we shed.......the heartache we feel........all because we care so much for these magnificent beings. The public don't see the retired horses we pay for to live their lives out in the paddock because their owners don't want them and they can't be rehomed...... It's not all about the money or winning to some of us.........there is another side to racing ...those who truly love their horses

25.01.2022 I think Kimba the lead pony likes his new stable

21.01.2022 Perth Racing is paying the ultimate respect to Mr Riley by naming a race after him on Saturday Such a fitting gesture considering he spent 15 years as Clerk of the Course

21.01.2022 A racehorse who trains himself (although I think he should be running in NSW) and then does his own water wading

20.01.2022 Seconda Vita made us all proud today with a fast finishing second and is now enjoying the beautiful sunshine https://www.rwwa.com.au/cris/JwPlayer.aspx

19.01.2022 The "dream team" going out to work this morning Hector on Tara Iti & Julien on Baron Times. Thankyou Hector for doing such a great job with the team...and I know the cheeky pony will miss you

18.01.2022 SECONDA VITA Meaning 'second life' - this beautiful girl was named after her owners had come through a rough patch in life. After going through chemo and being financially shattered, Pebbles owners contacted me for help. I wasn't able to take her on at that stage and advertised her on their behalf for sale or lease. But as the weeks passed and no-one was interested things became desperate. Pebbles owners believed in her so much and just wanted someone to give her a chance but couldn't afford to keep her anymore - I offered to take her on until they got back on their feet. On Saturday Pebbles did us all proud winning her first race and giving me my first Saturday Metro champion. To see the joy and happiness this has bought to everyone is worth more than anything. I thank everyone who has been involved in the journey

18.01.2022 With the recent 'exposure' about the slaughter of racehorses I wish to share we at Cottman Racing do not buy yearlings or race 2 yr olds - I do not personally believe in supporting this. Cottman Racing have also rehomed a number of retired racehorses who are still with the same owner and out there competing successfully living lovely lives. For those of ours who were not suitable to be rehomed for various reasons (including one who the owners didn't want back) are living wonderful lives in the paddock supported and paid for by us. To Cottman Racing it is NOT a business it is a passion where our priority is ALWAYS the horse not the money!

17.01.2022 Due to having to carry the costs of a number of horses who weren't mine over the short time I have been training, I sadly will no longer be taking on any outside horses. The horses welfare is always my first priority, however it is not only financially draining but also emotionally devastating especially when dealing with some owners who do not care... . Yes I know it is 'the industry' ....sadly......

17.01.2022 If only more did

16.01.2022 Thankyou to Julio Santarelli and the team at RWWA for giving me a chance to tell my story

16.01.2022 And Mario showed us he can be a racehorse - after many years of waiting he has finally found some confidence I love this horse https://www.rwwa.com.au/cris/JwPlayer.aspx

16.01.2022 Seconda Vita did us proud today winning her maiden and giving Julien and I our first Saturday winner! Thankyou to all who have been involved with Pebbles along the way https://www.rwwa.com.au/cris/JwPlayer.aspx

15.01.2022 Baron Times and his favourite jockey Julien Kokotajlo at trials this morning both did a super job

14.01.2022 Well yesterday wasn't our day - fair to say it was a debacle! Whatever could go wrong went wrong - just grateful Seconda Vita got around safely and we can wipe that race off and focus on the next.

13.01.2022 Beautiful view this morning

13.01.2022 Last night we sadly lost our most valuable team member Mr Riley. After spending 15 years as Clerk of the Course I was lucky enough to have him as a companion pony to the racehorses. Mr Riley was responsible for keeping all the horses calm and relaxed, especially Seconda Vita, and I know this played a big part in her success. He loved his job and took it very seriously, he touched the hearts of many and was truly a one in a million horse. I am so grateful to Jade for trusting me with him and can only imagine the sadness and loss she will be feeling. Our hearts are broken and the emptiness will never be filled. Thankyou Mr Riley for everything, I will miss your big personality and your magical charm. RIP my friend, run free, roll in the mud Jade Tangaroa

12.01.2022 Cottman Racing welcomes its newest family members....the 'stable ducks' have just proudly showed me their new family...I think this is about the 3rd generation born here

11.01.2022 One of the hardest things of being a trainer is when you take on a horse you just want to help and the owners let you down.....I'm so sorry I can't protect you from going back to the hell I hoped to save you from

10.01.2022 The little team are back

09.01.2022 Happy birthday to all the 'special' horses out there

09.01.2022 This is what real racing is all about....not the Peters & other big guys that have no passion...it's the battlers like this that make the sport great!! Good on you Scott, so happy for your win!!! https://www.rwwa.com.au//butterlea-lad-delivers-haleys-fi/

09.01.2022 Another great run from Seconda Vita For a little horse that nobody wanted I'm so glad I gave her a chance! Her owners have always believed in her and it is so rewarding seeing her prove them right! #fairytale #happystory #gopebbles https://www.rwwa.com.au/cris/JwPlayer.aspx

08.01.2022 Seconda Vita looking a treat this morning

06.01.2022 #sharpspinner #aprilfools

06.01.2022 My sister just sent me this from the racecourse in Dubai......for the love of horses

05.01.2022 CONGHUA Racecourse in China, simply amazing! If they can build this on the side of a mountain surely we can resurrect Belmont Park Racecourse @perthracing @rwwa...official @tbredwa Its about time for some big decisions, forward thinking and Government intervention @mark_mcgowan_mp @scottmorrisonmp I think the 170 million dollar industry deserves some help here in Western Australia. #1000metrestraight imagine racing over the Swan River? See more

04.01.2022 Tara Iti showed good improvement yesterday in his second trial. He is bred to stay so I'm confident once he starts racing over a bit more ground he'll be competitive https://www.rwwa.com.au/cris/JwPlayer.aspx

04.01.2022 They say water wading is good for the legs https://youtu.be/ApTPmK0OVv8

03.01.2022 Here is a thought.....what if Racing added a 'horse welfare fund' amount to every race similar to the jockeys welfare fund. Even $100 per race would add up to $$$thousands every week which could go to the after race care. registered retirement places or re-trainers/re-homers. Wouldn't this promote racing in such a positive way.....as let's face it without the horses we wouldn't have this sport. #horsewelfare #lifeafterracing #letsmakeithappen

03.01.2022 Cottman racing is looking for a track work rider at Ascot on Wed & Sat mornings - please PM me for more details

01.01.2022 Beautiful I wish more people valued horses rather than thinking of them as disposable....

01.01.2022 A beautiful fresh morning....makes you feel sooo alive!
