24.01.2022 The edges of the garden, that is the front is usually the driest and therefore plantings need to be chosen carefully to accommodate that. Another consideration is whether you want the plant to spread out onto the lawn or be small and neatly contained. more... http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

24.01.2022 SEATING IN THE GARDEN My favourite garden in the world is Ninfa, but I have to say that I was disappointed that there was not a seat anywhere. This beautiful garden is in Italy and because the site has fragile medieval buildings all through it, you can only go on guided tours and once your hour is up you are escorted out the gate. But it is a garden that I would visit again even without seats....more: http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

16.01.2022 Happy mother’s day to all the gardening Mums and if you do get a potted Chrysanthemum don’t forget to plant it in the garden after it has finished flowering. It will reward you for many more years, not only with lovely flowers but also memories. More http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

13.01.2022 LOROPETALUM or Chinese fringe plant is a large shrub or small tree which is extremely drought tolerant. It is known as China Pink in nurseries as it does come from China. It is in the witch hazel family and the branches can look a bit contorted. It is easily pruned and can be cloud pruned if you wanted to put it in a Japanese garden situation. see more: http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

12.01.2022 MISTING ORCHIDS Most of the orchids we grow here in Brisbane are epiphytic orchids; that is orchids that do not grow in the ground but rather on a tree branch or on a rock. Epiphytes grow in a forest situation and are often high in elevation and in close proximity to other plants and usually high humidity. see more:http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

12.01.2022 What wonderful rain we have had since Christmas. It is hard to believe the months of drought we went through. However we can learn from this. We can see what plants survived and how they have survived. There is no doubt that plants that were mulched survived better than those with little or no mulch. more...http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

09.01.2022 COLOUR IN THE GARDEN I have a very relaxed view of colour in the garden;. I like all colours however, I do have some favourite combinations. Gertrude Jekyll said ‘do not spoil a white garden by growing only white flowered plants in it’. There are some wonderful mono tone gardens....more: http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

07.01.2022 I can't open my garden, so I am bringing my garden to you. These were taken in the last couple of weeks. Have a lovely Easter and stay safe Jan and Jim

06.01.2022 Orchids have given me so much joy over the last 50+ years that I am keen to dispel the myth that they are difficult to grow. It is just that they grow differently to garden plants, as most of the orchids we grow here are epiphytic. more.....http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html

03.01.2022 MULCHING Mulching is very beneficial to the soil and therefore plants and it comes in many forms. Organic mulches are best and these can be: shredded newspaper, leaves, bark, shredded palm fronds, sugar cane, Lucerne, grass clippings, sawdust, plant cuttings and even twigs. more: http://www.coucalsgarden.com/monthly.html
