16.01.2022 Last night I was at the Criterion Hotel in Finch Hatton to draw the bullion raffle run by the Finch Hatton Progress Association and who have also dressed up the street with Christmas lights! It looked beautiful. I also met a couple of characters who needed some light refreshments at this busy time of year. #councilloralisonjones

15.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Day! Always was always will be oldest living culture on this land. Yuwi Determination and recognition occurred in February formally acknowledged Yuwi people cultural land from Midge Point to Cape Palmerston.... Today at the flag raising ceremony Aunty Veronica gave a welcome to country like never before in Yuwi language. It gave me shivers. I got a chance to catch up with a few others and check out the youth art display at JCC I missed seeing Nanna Ramsamy at the event as our oldest elder in our community.

14.01.2022 Congratulations Linkin! You are a true inspiration to others. #CouncillorAlisonJones

12.01.2022 Mackay Community Garden Xmas party. Sponsored by council Xmas grants was celebration thanking volunteers and welcoming the community. It was my pleasure to open the event. Sustainability is key in their organisation so how good is this. Chances Cafe catered and now the grant has been used tenfold to also help employ people that are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Merry Xmas everyone.

10.01.2022 It’s marine turtle nesting season! The nesting season runs from mid-October to January, and hatchlings generally emerge from December to the end of March. We spotted these tracks last week at Blacks Beach. ... Most of our local sandy beaches are potential nesting areas for flatback and green marine turtles. If you see a female turtle crossing the beach or digging a nest, do not approach it, make loud noises or shine bright lights as they are easily disturbed and may return to the water without laying any eggs. If you see turtle tracks, nesting or hatching activity, please contact Mackay & District Turtle Watch on 4954 9613 Did you know? Flatback turtles are the most common marine turtle on our beaches. Flatbacks can lay every two to three years. They lay about three to four clutches of 50 eggs (the size of a billiard ball). Green marine turtles occasionally lay on our local beaches, mainly island beaches. Greens turtles can lay every three to seven years. They can lay up to five clutches of 120 eggs (the size of a ping pong ball). #councilloralisonjones

10.01.2022 After a tough year, there has never been a better time to recognise someone who goes above and beyond for our community. Rather than giving up on their goals or community projects, some truly inspirational people stepped up, worked harder than ever and found innovative ways to overcome social distancing restrictions - it’s time those people were recognised for their efforts. There are eight award categories including: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Arts and ...Culture, Environmental Achievement, Lori Burgess Community Volunteer, Community Group, Senior Sports and Young Sports Award. The nomination can take as little as five minutes. The awards pay tribute to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to their local community and/or achieved exceptional results in sporting, or cultural endeavours. If you know a volunteer who goes above and beyond for their community, let them know you appreciate their hard work. If there is a local sports person who has achieved exceptional results, recognise them for their achievements. Or, if you know a passionate environmentalist or budding performer who lights up the stage, show them that you are proud of them by nominating them for an Australia Day Award. To nominate someone for an Australia Day Award visit council’s website www.mackay.qld.gov.au/australiaday or return a hardcopy version of the form to one of council’s Client Service Centres. Nominations close January 6, 2021 #councilloralisonjones

10.01.2022 Great to meet the CEO North Qld sports foundation Steve Farrell. Steve came to Mackay to present the Senior Service to Sport Award to Melissa Ferrier.

08.01.2022 Council recently installed a very special commemorative artwork at the Memorial Swim Centre. The artwork was created by local resident Marie Williams and consisted of individual, handmade crocheted poppies. The display proudly honours service personnel and horses from our region who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. A small gathering took place this afternoon on Remembrance Day for Marie to view the artwork on display . Mayor Greg Williamson and councillors ...also attended to congratulate Marie on her amazing work. Well done Marie and everyone who contributed to the project.
