25.01.2022 Is your pool summer-ready? Sunshine Coast Council Media Release Thursday 25 September 2020... Is your pool summer-ready? Like many of us, swimming pools need to get their summer body ready and spring is the perfect time to do your pool safety check. So use this time to spring into action because swimming pool safety is a joint responsibility. Council can regulate and educate but it’s up to all swimming pool owners to undertake regular checks to ensure their swimming pool barriers are compliant. Swimming pool owners are reminded that all pools, including spas and some portable pools need to comply with pool safety standards. The Queensland pool safety standards regulate the height and strength of barriers, non-climbable zones, gate latching requirements and preventing direct access from a building into a pool area. Pools capable of holding more than 300mm of water, must comply with the Queensland pool safety standard. This includes: swimming pools spas portable and inflatable swimming pools. To ensure your pool is compliant: check you have a building approval, and get advice from a pool safety inspector about how to ensure your pool complies or Contact a pool safety inspector to do a formal inspection with a view to getting a pool safety certificate. Be sure your swimming pool is summer ready by visiting council’s website or the Queensland Building and Construction Commission website for more information about pool safety compliance. ENDS

09.01.2022 Sunshine Coast volunteers make our beaches some of the cleanest in Australia Sunshine Coast Council Media Release September 3, 2020... Sunshine Coast volunteers make our beaches some of the cleanest in Australia In the past four years, 450,000 pieces of litter almost 11 tonnes of rubbish have been collected from Sunshine Coast beaches, leaving behind a much cleaner environment for residents and wildlife. This incredible feat was achieved thanks to the dedication of volunteers, schools, and charity and community groups, in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council as part of its Beach Clean-up Program. From January 2016 to June 2020, 761 clean-up events took place across the region an Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) local government record. Groups nation-wide input their information into the AMDI database, recording the location, quantities and types of marine rubbish collected, to give an overview of the impact on beaches across the country. Environmental Operations Senior Project Officer Raeleen Draper said the Beach Clean-Up Program was successful thanks to the combined effort of the Sunshine Coast community and council. We are lucky to have a community that cares so much about both humans and native animals living in a clean Sunshine Coast, Ms Draper said. While we are so grateful, it’s also a sad fact that we even have to do this which is why we are also working behind the scenes with our community to reduce, at the source, the rubbish littering our beaches and waterways in the first place. We encourage local groups to include their data in the AMDI database, as it allows us to identify the biggest impact on our local beaches. Thanks to this, we’ve been able to identify some of the main rubbish culprits like Slurpee cups, cigarette butts or doggy poo bags impacting certain areas and work with the local community to change habits and reduce use. Environment Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox invites the community to get involved and join in at a beach clean-up event, where they can see the impact of marine rubbish first hand. Our waterways, wetlands and beaches are an important part of our lifestyle. We enjoy swimming, boating and fishing, as well as walking, cycling and meeting friends and family near the water, Cr Cox said. Contributing towards a clean marine environment is also important for turtles and other native animals which permanently or seasonally call the Sunshine Coast home. There are regular community clean-ups available and council run events planned for later in the year, pending COVID restrictions. Upcoming council run events include the Schools Beach Clean Up, Clean Up for the Hatchlings and Clean Up Australia Day. Council’s website will have full details including dates in coming months. Search Beach Clean-Up Program on council’s website for more. ENDS

07.01.2022 Season’s Greetings! We are so excited to share our success with you from our participation yesterday (Saturday 5 December 2020) in the Northern Nationals First Lego League Challenge 2020 tournament! From many 100s of teams all over Queensland, The RoboKnights were 1 from 40 that were advanced to partake in this International qualifying event.... Over 7 hours, our small but great team of 3 presented shared our innovative project Engaging P.L.A.Y for the over 65s with both competing teams and judges, were judged on our team’s core values and robot engineering and performance. Being a team of only 3, competing against others that were 6-10/team, we had more than double the workload to complete in both leading up to and on the day. Since we spoke with you before our regional event in November, we further developed our project and prototype by trialling connecting website to wearable and smart home technology to showcase our monitoring systems and motivating voice activated chat bot to exercising the inactive over 65s. Due to time constraints in preparing this unique technology, on the day were only able to demonstrate it partially. However, the judges loved our concept! Additionally our robust engineering of our game field robot rewarded us with 2nd top scoring points on the day. RoboKnights were awarded 1st Place Northern Nationals FLL 2020/21: Motivators Award and 3rd Place Northern Nationals FLL 2020/21: Overall Champions Award. We are highly excited and proud to announce that our team, the RoboKnights have been advanced to compete at an international level at the Asian Pacific Open Championships expected to be held in Sydney, February 2021. Our team wish to thank you very much for your time in allowing us to share our ideas, ask questions and gain your expert feedback to help us in developing our project for this competition and would love to catch up with you again after Christmas to see how would could further improve our innovation for our international representation. We would also be happy and grateful if you were to share our success with your colleagues! 05.01.2022 Sunshine Coast Media Release November 2020 There’s more for you on new and improved MyMaps ... Did you know there’s a one-stop online shop where you can search everything from marine turtle nest locations and dog-friendly areas to updates on development and information about properties in your street? Council’s new and improved MyMaps online web mapping platform provides public access to a wide range of important information about the Sunshine Coast, including local development and details about facilities and services near you. Service Excellence Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said MyMaps was now more user-friendly and convenient after an extensive upgrade. MyMaps is one of several online development tools offered by Sunshine Coast Council. It enables users to access information about their own properties, underground services like storm water, electrical and communication infrastructure, Cr Dickson said. It also offers maps showing regional facilities, services and attractions, Divisional boundary maps that show which areas elected representatives are responsible for. You can also view maps that explain the application of local laws such as animal management and parking regulations. MyMaps is used by a wide range of people within the Sunshine Coast region including people within the development and real estate industries, land owners, community groups, civil engineers, event planners and schools and universities, Cr Dickson said. After surveying many of the people who regularly use MyMaps, council was able to make a number of upgrades and improvements to the platform including mobile responsiveness and the ability to download even more information and data about the Sunshine Coast. Businesses can also benefit from using MyMaps by accessing information about council’s current major projects and contractors for cleaning services, landscape maintenance, street cleaning, slashing and turf maintenance. To access MyMaps, click on the development tools and guidelines tab on council’s website. ENDS
04.01.2022 Our Future Waste! Have your say on the future of waste and resource recovery on the Sunshine Coast, including a third bin to capture food and organic waste (FOGO) by completing the online survey. Around half of the material in Sunshine Coast household general waste bins could be diverted from landfill and recycled.... Sunshine Coast Council is therefore looking at how we collect waste from households to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfill and achieve recycling targets outlined in the Queensland Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy. We are very interested in your views on the introduction of a third bin for collection of food organics and garden organics. Your input will help inform council on how waste is managed across the region into the future. We want to know what changes you’d be willing to make for a sustainable future. Fill out the survey before 5pm, Tuesday 2 March, 2021. https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/our-future-was

03.01.2022 Calling emerging young leaders Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group applications now open Sunshine Coast Council Media Release Tuesday 25 August 2020... Calling emerging young leaders Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group applications now open Sunshine Coast residents aged 12 to 25 our leaders of tomorrow are being invited to join an innovative Council program to inspire and engage young people and help shape inclusive and connected communities. Applications are open for the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group with the first workshop set to be held in September at the Thrive Youth Hub in Maroochydore. Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the program aimed to foster a strong connection between participants, while also empowering leadership skills and community networks. We have some great projects our young people can advise council on through the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group, including health and wellbeing programs specific to young people, plans for a junior council in 2021 as well helping us achieve our Sunshine Coast Community Strategy priorities, Cr Law said. Importantly, this is a wonderful opportunity for our future leaders to give advice on issues impacting our youth and for us to hear their voices loud and clear. Year 12 student Jordan Horne, 17, of Diddillibah, is the Queensland Youth Parliament representative for Ninderry. She said it was essential youth were engaged in fostering a better and safer community, along with encouraging a youth voice among all levels of government. Youth are continually referred to as the change-makers of the future. However, we all know change can’t start without action, Ms Horne said. By consulting youth and engaging them in council projects, we are ensuring a tight-knit community both now and into the future and helping to create active members in society who have the needs of the community in the forefront of their minds. Ms Horne said some of the biggest issues facing youth today included establishing a sense of belonging especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. While social media has most certainly aided in keeping people connected, new initiatives such as the Youth Action Group will help bring youth together to foster new friendships and also aid in strengthening community spirit. Council’s Youth Action Group is an opportunity to create change and impact people both now and into the future. If you’re questioning if you should apply, then you are the perfect candidate for this program because the sheer fact that the Youth Action Group is on your mind shows you care about your community’s future. People can register here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NTM96Q9 The program involves monthly workshops in a casual, relaxed setting. Applications close Tuesday 8 September 2020. ENDS
02.01.2022 Magpie swooping season has begun Sunshine Coast Council Media Release 24 August 2020... Magpie swooping season has begun Magpies breeding season has begun across the Sunshine Coast and council asks residents to remain tolerant of the protected native animal as they walk or ride near nests. Natural Areas Conservation Officer Tyron de Kauwe said magpies were very clever, remembering faces in their neighbourhood. Magpies are pretty amazing birds and in fact only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop, Mr de Kauwe said. Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising all the people in their neighbourhood. When they walk around with their head tilted, they are actually listening for prey and are capable of hearing earthworms and larvae moving underground. Unlike other members of the Artamidae family, magpies walk along the ground, they do not hop. They are also extraordinary parents, looking after their young for up to two years. Mr de Kauwe reminded residents of the role they played in ensuring their own safety, as well of that of young magpies and offered the following tips for living with magpies. Swooping begins once the eggs are hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks, he said. When you see male magpies defending their territory, they are merely defending their young. Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future. Move quickly through the area but do not run, wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses or use an umbrella, dismount and walk your bike and where possible, walk in groups or avoid the area altogether if possible. Most importantly though, take a moment to appreciate the complex carolling of one of Australia’s most iconic birdsthe humble magpie. ENDS
