25.01.2022 This is an intimate and thoughtful show of mostly emerging artists who mine one topic: stereotypical representations of Asian women, writes Tiarney Miekus for the The Sydney Morning Herald. Disobedient Daughters is a top pick for what to see around Melbourne this week, so drop in and say hi! Exhibition runs until 5pm, Sun 21 Mar, 2021. https://www.smh.com.au//around-the-galleries-our-pick-of-e... Image: Janelle Low. At Your Surface, 2018 (detail). 23.01.2022 We are delighted to congratulate Dianna Wells who is the recipient of the 4th Noel Counihan Commemorative Art Award for her work Looking Closer. You can see Wells’ work, and the work of 79 other incredible artists from the Moreland Summer Show 2020, in the Counihan Virtual Gallery: https://morelandsummershow2020.netlify.app/ Dianna Wells... Looking Closer, 2020 Lumen prints on fibre based paper 100 x 100 x 5 cm Looking Closer is an archive of photographic lumen prints created from endangered indigenous grassland specimens grown in my backyard in Brunswick. During the pandemic my practice has transferred from site-based work to working with prints, made by directly exposing plants onto photo sensitive material with sunlight and fixing them in my darkroom. I have found solace working with indigenous plants, working in solitude I have gained a reverence and respect for the grasslands as it once existed. A human landscape controlled by fire, rejuvenating annually over the cooler winter months, grasslands provided a habitat for native fauna and a food source for Victoria’s indigenous population. There is grief associated with the loss of an ecosystem and with the lockdown itself. I believe that understanding resilience and recovery is the pathway forward in these times of change caused by bushfires, climate change and pandemic. #lumen #nativeflowers #solitude #solace #CounihanVirtualGallery #NoelCounihanCommemorativeArtAward #Victoria #indigenousplants #landscape #local #ecosystem #resilience #recovery #climatechange #climatecrisis #climateactivism

13.01.2022 Heather Hesterman retraced Charles Sturt’s search for an inland sea, with a trolley of exotic plants in tow. The results are startling, writes Megan Backhouse for The Age Hesterman’s exhibition prompts viewers to consider how plants are brought in to colonise landscapes. It was absurd and a bit wacky. I was pushing something into the landscape that didn’t suit, Hesterman says [of her work ‘Mobile Garden’]. These plants wouldn’t survive in those locations. To me they repr...esented nostalgia for something that’s not Australian and also ideas about the taming of the landscape. Check out the article featuring Heather Hesterman, whose solo show ‘Garden’ is on display at the Counihan Gallery until Sun 21 Mar, 5pm. https://www.theage.com.au//it-was-absurd-artist-takes-an-e The Gallery is open from Thu 18 Feb, 11am with COVID-safe measures in place. These include: digital contact tracing, density caps, hand sanitiser, masks and social distancing. If you are experiencing symptoms, please get tested then stay home. 03.01.2022 In ‘This Apology’, Son demonstrates a significant part of her art practice by scratching onto a cellophane sheet. During this abrasive process, Son also shares a personal anecdote related to her work ‘Please accept this apology, ’ featuring in the exhibition Disobedient Daughters. 'This Apology' will be available on Facebook and Instagram TV from 2 pm, Sat 20 Feb until Sun 21 Mar, 5 pm. This online demonstration is suitable for ages 15 and over. It contains some co...ntent which may not be suitable for younger viewers. About Ellen YG Son: Having lived in Korea, Singapore and Australia, Son occupies a complex cultural position. She is interested in culture, the limitations of language and racial barriers; by picking these apart, Son investigates how these factors shape identity. Son uses cellophane as a metaphorical lens; our cultural values shape the way we see the world just as looking through cellophane does. By scratching and sewing onto the surface of cellophane, Son erases, inscribes, layers and censors. As a result, Son creates installations of delicate cellophane banners that illustrate neither a definite nor indefinite sense of belonging to each culture.
