Usually it centers on death. We feel it when someone gets a dire diagnosis or when we have the normal thought that we’ll lose a parent someday. Anticipatory grief is also more broadly imagined futures. There is a storm coming. There’s something bad out there. With a virus, this kind of grief is so confusing for people. Our primitive mind knows something bad is happening, but you can’t see it. This breaks our sense of safety. We’re feeling that loss of safety. I don’t think we’ve collectively lost our sense of general safety like this. Individually or as smaller groups, people have felt this. But all together, this is new. We are grieving on a micro and a macro level"

19.01.2022 Overwhelming experiences that didn't get the support to resolve at the time (conditions for trauma resolution weren't present) stay locked inside of us as nervous system responses (fight, flight, freeze), feeling and emotions, thoughts and beliefs and behaviours. All elements of experience can get frozen in time. Until we can come back to the body and let what is frozen inside of us find resolution, it will continue to impact our life in the way of uncomfortable symptoms.... It can be so confusing when this happens, as its the past playing out in the present, and it often doesn't make any sense to us. For example - someone is constantly stuck in a loop of anger and reactivity (behaviour and emotion), or they may think everyone will leave them so they don't get close to people (belief and behaviour) or perhaps they are overprotective of their child limiting their sense of themselves (stuck feelings of fear). There are a myriad of ways that unresolved trauma shows up in our current day. For trauma resolution to occur, there has to be certain conditions present (too long to write about all of the conditions here). Therapy is about creating those conditions in the here and now, so they body can feel 'safe enough' to feel what was once too overwhelming to feel. We have to feel 'safe enough' (one of the conditions) to face distress and when we face and resolve those difficulties the body begins to naturally express its own signs of safety which in turn decreases the confusing symptoms and patterns expressed in our daily life.
