23.01.2022 A great article on 'death doulas' and their role in supporting individuals and families. Good Morning from Tulip Tree Therapy. www.tuliptreetherapy.com The death doula role may well incorporate some of the direct care provided by families and help them to navigate the complex needs and planning required at the end of life. If so, death doulas could represent an important opportunity to improve dying outcomes.

17.01.2022 Emotions need to be named, validated, and listened to for many reasons. Our emotions need tending too, as over time, not doing so may open the door for chronic anxiety, depression and chronic illness to be ever present in our lives. www.tuliptreetherapy.com

15.01.2022 When self care becomes a measure of whether we have reached that elusive state of glowing mental health it can be self-defeating. As blogger Kate O'Sullivan says " Its also trashing the phrase self-care if it makes me feel like Im not doing enough to save myself." I love Kate's writings and reflections and sure her her words will have resonance for many. www.tuliptreetherapy.com

11.01.2022 There is a good kind of waiting which trusts the agents of fermentation. There is a waiting which knows that in pulling away one can more wholly return.... There is the waiting which prepares oneself, which anoints and adorns and makes oneself plump with readiness for loves return. There is a good kind of waiting which doesnt put oneself on hold but rather adds layers to the grandness of ones being worthy. This sweet waiting for ones fruits to ripen doesnt stumble over itself to be the first to give but waits for the giving to issue at its own graceful pace. 08.01.2022 Good Morning from Tulip Tree Therapy after what has been a long hiatus from facebook as I have travelled the country visiting my beloved grandchildren. Whilst away, one of beautiful dogs 'Gracie' was taken from us by a snake bite. Coming home has meant that I have had to face the grief of her loss as her absence looms so large in every room of the house and every part of the routine of our lives. The temptation to move away from the difficult emotions and pain of the loss is so strong but I think this exquisite fable on the downside of denying difficult emotions is so beautiful. Another children's book that so gently imparts insights on life.

04.01.2022 ~ Chloe I was due to give birth around the time of the 1929 Launceston floods and the day the floods hit, I went into labour and my husband had to carry me out... of our bedroom window at our house in Brisbane Street, put me into a little boat and row me to the Canning Street Hospital, where I gave birth to our first child Keven. I had 11 children all up. Seven boys and four girls. Seven of my children are still alive. My eldest living child Joy is now 87 years old. I am the oldest person in Tasmania. Well, thats what they tell me anyway. I dont really care to be honest. I will turn 108 in May this year. On my birth certificate it says I was born on the 27th May 1911. My father was Frederick William Dadson and he was born in Launceston in the 1870s. He used to grow produce in Chungon and Pedder Streets in South Launceston behind the old hospital. He also used to train horses and back in the old days, there was a fountain at the Wellington Street and Hobart Road intersection where Metro Buses are now and he would stop there and give his horses a drink. One day he was there with his champion horse named Black Direct and the poor horse was hit by lightning and killed instantly. Right there at the fountain. It hit the metal harness and jig on his head and narrowly missed my father. My mother was Naomi Faulkner before she married my father and was a wonderful mother. I was a talented ballerina when I was young. I remember getting my first pair of satin dance shoes and I was so excited and I spent the next few years on my tip toes (laughs) I once danced on my tippy toes all the way down Balfour Street and the people in Balfour all came out to watch and clap me. From the top to the bottom. I remember it very well. I wore out so many pairs of ballet shoes. I went to Charles Street Primary school so when I would walk home Id go past the Sportsmans Hotel and the men in the pub would always see me dance past the window and would come out and applaud me. I became one of the better ballerinas here in Tasmania. I was pretty good I suppose. I was asked to go and dance on the mainland but my father would not allow it as my asthma was too bad. I never worked after leaving school at 12 because my father said that if my older brothers couldnt support me then we arent much of a family. Thats how it was back then. I married a man named Alfred Duncan in 1928 and fell pregnant soon after. After we married, we moved into my Aunty Ems house in Brisbane Street. I used to write nursery rhymes and include the names of my children in them and made a book out of them and they used to love it. I also wrote a poem about returned soldiers from the war and it was also put into a book of my poetry that my daughter Joy still has. We lived in St John Street for many years until we moved to Hargreaves Crescent in Mayfield in the early 50s. When we moved there, there were only two big water tanks in front of the shop, then the hydro put on the water in front of our house for the suburb of Mayfield. Our kids were never any trouble really and were always pretty happy. My husband died of pneumonia in 1977. 49 years we were married. He was a good man my Alfred. I loved him dearly and his death hit me and the kids hard. I was still gardening until I was 101, growing my own vegetables which I believe is one of the gifts of life. My kids have all chipped in helping me over the years. My son Tony has been wonderful and helped care for me and keep me living independently right up until this last month or so. He had a stroke recently so it became too hard to care for me. I am now in here and I am starting to settle in to not being home. Its not easy but I am well cared for here. I have no idea how many grand kids, great grand kids and the rest of it so dont ask me. There are a lot of them, that I am sure of. (laughs) Family is all I remember fondly now at my age. Nothing else stays with you. Just family memories and those feelings of love. I dont have any titbits of advice as to how to live so long. Okay, maybe one. Dont die. (laughs) Please share this story as Chloe said she would love her story to be read by millions. Lets make it happen folks! Thanks #humansoflaunceston

01.01.2022 Last night I had the great pleasure of attending and briefly speaking at the Huon Disability Network dinner. The topic for the evening was 'Active Citizenship' and I was asked to speak about a program offered by Tulip Tree Therapy that explores strategies to foster healthy self esteem, confidence, self-determination, autonomy and resilience for young people living with a disability. The program also incorporates a section on self-care for parents, in acknowledgement of the... impacts of having to be a constant advocate for your child. The program is able to be funded under NDIS and can be tailored to the unique needs of your child and their 'circle of support.' If you are interested in learning more do not hesitate to contact me to explore delivery options available.
