24.01.2022 Has the Covid-19 crisis made you more appreciative of farmers and local food production? If so, you’re well and truly in the majority. According to new social research conducted through the Love Food Hate Waste Program, 70% of people appreciate farmers more and 86% are glad to live in a country like Australia that grows its own food! People are wasting less food, they’re making the most of the food they buy and they are really valuing the role of our food producers and our country’s food supply chain more, says Love Food Hate Waste program manager Amanda Kane. A big shout out to our local farmers for providing us with quality food, especially in challenging times like these.

19.01.2022 Country of Origin Labelling, or CoOL, requirements introduced in 2016 are now under review. CoOL uses a bar chart to display the proportion of a product grown, produced and manufactured in Australia but with import rates of ham, bacon, cheese and even cut flowers surprisingly high, our local producers want to know whether CoOL is actually working. 18.01.2022 Like in South Australia and Tasmania, our oyster farmers need some government fee relief. As an industry that relies upon hospitality and tourism for around 70% of sales, #COVID19Aus restrictions have had a dramatic effect on oyster businesses. This comes while growers are still recovering from some of the lasting impacts of the summer bushfires. NSW Farmers is calling on the NSW Government to waive all fees and levies payable by oyster growers until the industry is able to bounce back > https://bit.ly/2WavgiK

So if you are tucking into a Tim Tam while in self-isolation, thank farmers like Glen and Julie who are #keepingusfed and working hard to help provide some Easter cheer during this challenging time. 16.01.2022 The Narrabri Gas Project has been a significant issue facing members over recent months. We have now formalised our opposition to the project, based on the unacceptable risk it poses to water resources, soil and air quality.
14.01.2022 Know what the difference between Beef Jerky and Biltong is? Both are meat snacks that have seen a rise popularity in Australia. One has origins in North and South America and is typically marinated with salt, pepper and soy sauce. The other hails from South Africa and involves vinegar and spices. Find out more in The Farmer magazine, which recently spoke to three producers about what drew them to ‘the jerky life’ and what farmers need to know about this growing sector > https://thefarmermagazine.com.au/beef-jerky-biltong/
12.01.2022 The stump jump plough. The Ridley Stripper. The Harrington Seed Destructor just some of the grand names for inventions, contraptions and innovations by Australian farmers. 11.01.2022 Are you considering buying goods online from overseas? Food, seeds, plants, meat and pet food are considered high-risk goods as they may pose a biosecurity risk to Australia and may not be permitted. 10.01.2022 It’s time for supermarkets to step up and lift the price of their dairy products. Milk prices in Australia are unrealistically low, and it needs to stop. Australia cannot afford to lose our dairy farmers, but sadly this could become the reality if dairy products continue to be devalued. Dairy farmers need to be paid a fair price, and it starts with retailers lifting the prices of their dairy products! Let’s start with a minimum of $1.50 per litre for milk and $9.00 per kilo for cheese. Check out this article in the The Weekly Times >https://bit.ly/3b8rcVJ and the NSW Farmers media release >https://bit.ly/35EJQUn
09.01.2022 Happy #WorldMilkDay! #Raiseyourglassofmilk and thank our wonderful dairy farmers for a delicious dose of calcium and protein. #MilkMatters as part of a healthy, balanced diet. And it’s yummy, too! Today is an important day for our dairy farmers, as it marks the first time dairy processors will be required to disclose their farmgate milk prices publicly. Let’s hope our dairy farmers start getting fairer prices for the milk that we love! 05.01.2022 NSW Farmers is pleased the ACCC will be launching an inquiry into the fresh food and dairy supply chain, scrutinising the treatment of farmers by supermarkets. We have been advocating for some time for this on behalf of our members.
05.01.2022 Persimmon farmers Brett and Kate Guthrey have entered the new world of contactless drive through and Click & Collect on their historic farm at Cobbitty, 35km southwest of Sydney. With the closure of the Flemington Markets to the public, the generational farmers have adopted digital marketing to sell direct from the tree to the public. Kate says it’s not a bumper crop this year, but the first pick of Hachiya persimmons are eating lovely. This is the astringent, soft eating variety . The crunchy, non-astringent Fuyu persimmon will be picked next and Kate says fresh persimmons will be available for the next 6 to 8 weeks. Order online at https://www.kathleenhaven.com.au/. #keepingusfed Persimmons contain a big dose of dietary fibre, minerals and antioxidants. Persimmons are also a good source of vitamin C and beta carotene.
04.01.2022 The buzz is all about bees today. It’s #WorldBeeday and you could say these little wonder workers are the most important organism on the planet for food and fibre production. A third of all that we eat and much of what we wear, relies on pollination by bees. Did you know about 53 different food crops in Australia depend on bee pollination for production? Australia’s estimated 1650 native bee species also play a critical role in the lifecycle of our native plants.
