25.01.2022 This is a significant piece about the federal government's plans for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Not surprisingly, there is more to it than the pu...blic spin. https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au//exclu/160708680010805 "As well as the independent assessments, the list of conditions that granted people automatic access to the scheme will be torn up. Every single person in the scheme will have their support reassessed from the end of next year if they seek a plan review or have a change in circumstances. The fear is this will leave them vulnerable to a reduction in care. There are also several measures in the information paper aimed at soothing the concerns of Robert and some of his conservative colleagues. Changes to the legislation will also make it clear that NDIS funds should not be used to purchase the services of a sex worker or devices solely intended for sexual stimulation and arousal, the paper read. To do this, and to bring in outsourced independent functional assessments that will govern who gets into the NDIS and what support they receive, the Coalition has been playing a years-long game of policy chess. All the key pieces are now in position to fundamentally reshape the nation’s disability scheme. The story of how they were moved into place is one of frustration, political ransom and long horizons.

24.01.2022 A shining light amidst 2020. This is Nicole. She is a 39 year old lady with cerebral palsy. She lives in supported accommodation with some of the most dedicated and caring support workers (Cooinda Terang). I received a referral for Nicole to assess her appropriateness for a self controlled powered wheelchair. As well as being predominantly paralysed in all four limbs with severe contractures, Nicole is non verbal and has limited movement in her head and hands and primarily us...es her eyes to communicate- which isn’t overly effective. It was difficult to assess Nicole’s cognition and to determine her ability to self drive a powered wheelchair- trial was the only way to know. The first photo is the hire wheelchair she was in on my first visit. Sad is an understatement (look at her head position ). With the help of the ever so knowledgeable and willing Kelvin from Active Rehab in Bendigo (Life Beyond the Norm), she is in her new wheelchair which NDIS approved and funded ($26000). It might look like just another wheelchair to the naked eye but if you look closely it has all been customised for Nicole including a cushion which has leg cut outs to accomodate her severe leg discrepancy and a back rest which supports her scoliosis and assists with further contractures. This wheelchair has not only helped Nicole with mobility but it has given her more function and independence than was ever predicted. She now takes herself to her room when she’s tired. She takes her washing to the laundry. She ventures out in the yard when SHE wants to. AND she is now mostly continent as she takes herself to the bathroom door when she needs to go. This wheelchair has enhanced Nicole’s communication, her mobility, her independence, her dignity and her right to live a meaningful life. Shared with consent.

22.01.2022 What is it you ask? This is a custom made chopping board designed by us and made by the wonderful crew at Nigretta of Hamilton (supported employment). Why’s it so special?... This board is for a client with bilateral upper limb weakness who wants to remain independent with her food preparation. It’s lightweight, is raised higher, has non slip feet, has side handles to assist with lifting and the addition of nifty raised edges to stop food slipping. My favourite features is that it doesn’t look disability specific and we were able to support a disability employment agency by purchasing from them.

22.01.2022 Tomorrow night at 8.45pm on ABC Plus airs a documentary very close to my heart. The documentary tells the story of residents moving from one of Melbourne’s last institutions into independent living. I worked here for 4 years whilst study OT and I’m so excited to watch them tell their stories to everyone. ... https://www.beat.com.au/leaving-allen-street-documentary/

21.01.2022 Meet Dean. He is 43 and has just moved into his OWN home for the first time. With the help of Country Vic OT (and an extremely caring and dedicated sister/family), significant funds were able to be secured to enable his goal become a reality. ... Dean has 1:1 care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, (in his own home) by his loyal and passionate carers. This is what NDIS can provide when your OT uses the appropriate functional assessments, has a good knowledge of & ability to reference the legislation as well as provides a strong advocacy for client centred care. Ask Dean what he enjoys about his new home...I can get around easy and having my carers. He is most excited about having friends come to his home and having more independence. We’re so happy for Dean and his family.

20.01.2022 Fantastic article in The Age this morning regarding the NDIS reforms. Unable to post link due to FB media ban, but have pasted content below "Michael* hasn’t showered or changed his clothes in three weeks, but when the National Disability Insurance Scheme independent assessor asked him how much difficulty he had washing his body, getting dressed and eating, he replied: None. He’s not lying he can physically do these tasks but due to the cognitive impacts of his disabil...Continue reading

03.01.2022 This is Rhiannon, a lovely 38 year old lady living independently with supports due to a disability from Cerebral Palsy. Rhiannon has used a wheelchair for mobility since the age of 2, so she’s gone through a few, including a lemon (her words!) Here she is in her brand new wheelchair which was customised by myself and supplied by Active Rehab.... Take a look at the positioning now vs the lemon Also check out Rhiannon getting some cheeky biscuits from the pantry (note the vertical lift isn’t the scissor lift style to protect the little fingers of Rhiannon’s much loved nieces). Wheelchair and all its accessories fully funded by NDIS. Photos and stories shared with permission.
