22.01.2022 NSW State Coroner Mary Jerram has felt compelled by evidence in incidents involving Aboriginal people to point out that police "do not have a licence to act recklessly, carelessly or dangerously or with excessive force". Such behaviour constitutes "an abuse of police powers". Institutional racism must be addressed. Source: https://www.creativespirits.info//aboriginal-police-relati Members of our volunteer Committee of Management express solidarity with people on the streets... of US cities protesting against the death of George Floyd, and with Australians in the streets throughout our own country protesting on behalf of First Nations Australians who have suffered - some to their deaths - from systemic racism that affects all aspects of their lives. 18.01.2022 "Feelings advocacy is people feeling bad about what's happening, and the way they go about feeling better is by coming to a demonstration; by donating to a particular organisation; by reading a book. "If this is what they are doing, then nothing is going to change except their own feelings. "We need to move past our feelings. We should use our feelings to put into place anti-racist structures and policies. ... "This should not be about making us feel better. This should be about transformation, because if we don't, we'll be back to the same situation of being horrified by another video. The cycle will only continue." - Ibram X. 14.01.2022 "I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must at that moment become the centre of the universe."

07.01.2022 A gut-wrenching monologue from actor Meyne Wyatt from his play City of Gold to close the Q+A special on racism in Australia. He calls out racism and explains the way it has pervaded his entire life. "It's not about that one time, it's about all those times. And seeing us as animals, that shit needs to stop. Black deaths in custody, that shit needs to stop.... I don't want to be what you want me to be. I want to be what I want to be. Never trade your authenticity for approval. Be crazy, take a risk, be different, offend your family. Call them out. Silence is violence. Complacency is complicity. I don't want to be quiet. I don't want to be humble. I don't want to sit down." "The Australian Dream" is available to stream on iView. Every Australian should watch it. #BlackLivesMatter #AboriginalLivesMatter #UnitedAgainstRacism #EachPersonCanMakeADifference #CourageToCare

07.01.2022 This past Wednesday marked what would have been the 91st birthday of Anne Frank. Miep Gies was one of the courageous souls who helped to hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis during World War II. In 1994, Miep Gies was awarded the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Medal of Valor. She was introduced by Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi:... "When you feel really comfortable, take a moment to think about Miep Gies. She didn't think about being extraordinary; it was just something that needed to be done. "That's a big thing. Can any of us say that we're ready to do that? Can you say that you're ready to lay down your life for me? Can I say the same about you? "I hope it's a question that I never have to answer." At this time when #BlackLivesMatter is at the forefront of our minds, and we must all be allies to the people of colour in our communities and in our nation, Whoopi Goldberg's words have additional poignancy. #BeAnUpstanderNotABystander #AboriginalLivesMatter #UnitedAgainstRacism #EachPersonCanMakeADifference #CourageToCare
