Courtenay (Courts) Karoubas, ActivOT Burnside, completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) at The University of Sydney at the end of 2006. Courts has a special interest in working with children, teenagers and adults who have a diagnosis of autism, intellectual disability, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). She is also keenly interested in the impact of primitive reflexes and often undiagnosed sensory processing related difficulties affecting mental health and general difficulties in daily life. During your OT sessions with Courts, you can expect that she will work closely with you to identify difficulties and goals that are most important to you. Examples of sensory processing related difficulties that may be affecting your daily life include but are not limited to, difficulty concentrating, needing to move constantly, not noticing if you are being spoken to, feeling overwhelmed in busy places like the supermarket or parties, fear of hair cutting, wearing clothing that does not match the weather, feeling extremely overwhelmed if your routine changes, sore hand when handwriting, difficulty making friends or feeling like your body is not very coordinated when playing sports. Courts then uses her specialised skills and tools to: assess how you process and respond to sensory information from your environment identify your individual strengths and areas of difficulty implement evidence based strategies and techniques that would best assist you to achieve your goals review your goals and progress regularly with you. When working with you, Courts can provide: community based occupational therapy most suitable for your needs (preschool, school and home based) a multidisciplinary therapy approach by staying in touch with other specialists on your team (speech pathologist, psychologist) consultation, education and support tools to your family members, teachers, special education support coordinators, out of school hours staff, support workers, and disability respite services sensory profile assessment informed behaviour support sensory space design and recommendations for appropriate, cost effective therapy tools. Share away if you think it will help someone you know. As soon as possible after a Positive test (sick yet or not): ...Continue reading
