25.01.2022 Applications are now open for Cowra Council's Charles Sturt University (CSU) Scholarship for 2021. The $3000 scholarship is awarded annually by Council for a local student in their first year at CSU at either the Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Canberra, Albury-Wodonga or Port Macquarie campuses. 23.01.2022 Cowra Council's Annual Christmas Giving Tree Cowra Council staff participated in our annual Christmas Giving Tree again this year. Through the generosity of our staff members, 115 gifts were purchased and wrapped. Today, Cowra Information and Neighbourhood Centre - CINC popped by to collect the gifts to help make Christmas special for a local child this year.

21.01.2022 Splash park fun at the Cowra Aquatic Centre Exciting upgrades to the Cowra Aquatic Centre will now progress, with Council resolving at their meeting this week to go to tender for architectural and engineering designs to update the pool’s filtration system, to keep the current toddler pool with a new filtration system and to install a modern, fun splash area for kids. 19.01.2022 Cowra Council is developing a 10-year strategic vision for sport and recreation in the Cowra Shire and need your feedback to develop the latest Cowra Sport and Recreation Plan. Building on previous plans and the achievements of the community in the last 20 years, the Cowra Sport and Recreation Plan will guide sustainable investment in facilities, identify priorities and provide a strategic framework for the planning and management of sport and recreation services. Otium Plann...ing Group has been engaged by Council to facilitate community engagement and stakeholder consultation to develop the Cowra Sport and Recreation Plan and a series of consultations has been planned to ensure that everyone has a chance to have their say on the new plan. Residents are encouraged to complete a short online community survey to share their thoughts on the sport and recreation issues that matter most to them. 16.01.2022 Landholders in the Cowra Shire, please be advised that Silver Leaf Nightshade has commenced flowering which is the optimum time for chemical control with a registered herbicide. Mechanical cultivation is not a suitable control method due to the plants ability to greatly increase vegetative growth from damaged roots. Cowra Council’s Biosecurity Officers will be conducting property inspections over the next two months targeting this, and other Priority Weeds as detailed under t...he Central Tablelands Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan 2017-2022. Silver Leaf Nightshade is a Weed of National Significance, and as such measures must be taken to reduce existing infestations and prevent spread from their land under the Biosecurity Act 2015. 15.01.2022 Water Supply Alert Power outages in Koorawatha are preventing water system pumps from operating. Consumers effected are those beyond Koorawatha, including Bendick Murrell.... Essential Energy is working on the issue however if the power outage continues throughout the night assistance from consumers in minimising water consumption will help Council better manage emergency water carting.

13.01.2022 In October a number of local community and not-for-profit groups received funding as part of round one of Cowra Council’s 2020/2021 Community Grants Program. 23 groups were given grants totalling $28,000. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cowra Council were unable to host their morning tea to celebrate and thank the work these community and not for profit groups do for our community. To replace the morning tea, Council put together this short video featuring a numbe...r of the successful community groups to show what they will be doing with the funding they received. Congratulations to all the successful applicants! The next round of community grant applications will open in February 2021. 11.01.2022 Changes to Target Carpark Access this week A reminder that there is no access to the Target carpark this week from Brisbane Street and the top section of the Target carpark will be off limits while works are underway. Access is still available from Macquarie Street. From Thursday 3 December to Tuesday 8 December, a hotmix contractor is scheduled to commence paving works during which time the entire car park will be off limits with sections of the carpark slowly re-openi...ng again as sections of the paving are completed (weather permitting). 10.01.2022 Works to improve roads in the Cowra Shire over the next two years are underway as part of 20 projects funded through the Fixing Local Roads program. The work being carried out by Cowra Shire Council has been brought forward as part of NSW and Australian Governments funding that is turbocharging Fixing Local Roads, a program that reduces the maintenance backlog on local roads across the state. East of Woodstock, pavement strengthening has been completed at Quartpot Road, wi...th sealing of both Quartpot Road and Kangaroo Flat Road due to be completed in the next few months. Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West said this vital work is going to not only improve the condition of the Shire’s school bus routes, but will also bring welcome improvements for the movement of trucks and farm machinery throughout the Shire. 08.01.2022 Music for World Peace Day Launch Cowra Civic Centre will present the world premiere of a newly commissioned music composition on World Peace Day, Monday 21st September. Instead of a live performance at the Centre, the orchestral work will be broadcast through sound systems rigged onto the back of military vehicles which will be driven slowly through the residential streets of Cowra, taking the music to the people. Following a four week residency in Cowra, composer Nicho...las Gentile has been producing a recording of his new work, World Peace Suite in preparation for the launch event. 08.01.2022 Indonesian Heroes Day is a Remembrance Day annually celebrated on 10 November in Indonesia. In recognition of this significant day, Mayor Bill West on behalf of Cowra Council (pictured here) and Gordon Rolls and Graham Apthorpe on behalf of the Cowra Breakout Association laid wreaths in the Indonesian Memorial section located within Cowra Cemetery. The Indonesian Memorial is made up of the graves of 13 Indonesian political detainees who died in the Cowra POW Camp while being held on behalf of the Dutch East Indies government in the early years of WWII.

07.01.2022 Cheryl McAlister has been announced Cowra’s 2021 Citizen of the Year. Cheryl has been making a positive contribution to the Cowra community for over 40 years through her voluntary work and outstanding service and is a very worthy Citizen of the Year. This achievement is a reflection of her involvement with numerous community groups including the Cowra Eisteddfod, Cowra Family History Group, Cowra CWA Evening Branch and through her work with Aboriginal Youth at Cowra High Sch...ool, Mayor of Cowra, Cr Bill West said. Cr West revealed the winners of the 2021 Australia Day Awards at today’s presentation at the Cowra Civic Centre alongside Cowra’s 2021 Australia Day Ambassador, actor, singer, producer, teacher and film director, Peter Cousens AM (pictured here with Cheryl). The Citizen of the Year Award was one of a number of awards made today. The Cowra Nature Based Adventure Playground Committee was named Community Group of the Year, Lowanna Murray was named Young Citizen of the Year and Maree McKay received the Dr Warren Whiley Memorial Award. 04.01.2022 Cowra Council’s financial position has been described as strong and resilient, after an independent audit confirms that Council maintains a net operating surplus for the 2019-2020 financial year. Independent auditors, Intentus Chartered Accountants representing the Audit Office of NSW presented the annual Financial Statements Review at Council’s monthly meeting earlier in November. 03.01.2022 Target Carpark Drainage Work Update As work progresses towards the final stage, from Tuesday 24 November to Friday 27 November, there will be no access to the carpark from Brisbane Street and the top section of the Target carpark will be off limits (see red shaded area). From Thursday 3 December to Tuesday 8 December, a hotmix contractor is scheduled to commence paving works during which time the entire car park will be off limits with sections of the carpark slowly ...re-opening again as sections of the paving are completed. Following the paving, there will be minor works relating to lighting and landscaping that will have minimal effect to the parking. 02.01.2022 COWRA AQUATIC CENTRE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND Council regrets to advise that due to significant resourcing challenges the Cowra Aquatic Centre will be closed for the next three days Saturday, Sunday and Monday December 19-21. Council has engaged Belgravia Leisure to assist in operating the facility for the remainder of this season commencing next Tuesday. ... There have been a significant number of challenges in adequately staffing the aquatic centre this year and after looking at numerous options this is considered the best course of action at this time. Belgravia is an established operator in the industry and intends to primarily utilise existing local staff. All conditions of entry will remain unchanged for regular users under the new arrangement. This is a short term measure for the current season only to ensure the facility remains open and available for the enjoyment of the community Council apologises for the inconvenience over the next few days.
