This weekend alone in NSW, 540 people were arrested and 1062 charges laid. The violence has not been suburb exclusive, from a 23 year old being bashed and left in a comma in Bondi, a King Hit on a 44 year old man in Balmain, & assaults and drink driving charges occuring within the outer western suburbs of Sydney. The level of violence has increased o...ver the same period as last year when 548 people where arrested but only 966 charges laid during the same period. 03.01.2022 In a significant decision today, the High Court handed down its decision in relation to the controversial and much publicised efforts by the ACT to legislate same sex marriages. The High Court unanimously held that the legislation introduced by the ACT Parliament last month could not operate concurrently with the Marriage Act 1961 which is the governing legislation across Australia in relation to marriages which, as it currently stands, only allows for a marriage to occur b...etween two persons of the opposite sex. A summary of the High Courts decision can be read below. The result of this decision means that the flurry of marriages, some 27 in total, which occurred in the ACT since the legislation came into operation in the ACT on 7 December 2013 have now been declared invalid and are therefore not legally recognised in Australia. There were a number of other States across Australia including NSW, awaiting the outcome of the High Courts decision before they made a decision about passing similar legislation. This now puts an end to any future attempts by States in seeking to operate independently of the Commonwealth based legislation and means that any change to the existing laws can only be made by Federal Parliament.
