24.01.2022 Meet Richard Old, a Supervisor working on the Waikeria Prison Development Project, a couple of hours south of Auckland, NZ. ’ ? Interacting with the subbies. I always make time to be available to them and we solve problems together. Also seeing the Release to Work site participants and prisoners from the Release to Work program who operate our cafeteria every day, because they get so much out of being part of the team. Without them we cou...ldn’t operate - there’s nothing for 10 kilometres. ’ ? 21.01.2022 At our Paradise Dam site in Central Queensland, the team is working closely with the Department of Environment and Science (DES) and dam operator Sunwater to protect the Critically Endangered White-throated Snapping Turtle during its nesting season. Supported by the CPB Contractors’ team, the state’s environmental body recovered 30 eggs which are now being housed at the site’s specially made ‘Turtle Chute’, a protective nest enclosure that helps shield the vulnerable eggs fr...om predators such as foxes and wild pigs during incubation. The protection of the eggs follows the relocation of three endangered turtles during downstream destocking, of which two were female with eggs. The enclosure will be monitored until the eggs hatch. The White-throated Snapping Turtle is one of the largest short-necked freshwater turtles in Australia and is typically found in the Fitzroy, Mary and Burnett Rivers of South East Queensland and associated waterways. It was listed as Critically Endangered in 2014.

08.01.2022 Workers at PNG’s ANGAU Memorial Hospital Redevelopment site recently helped produce face masks for colleagues, family and the wider community as part of the country’s response to COVID-19. Staff at the Lae site were provided with materials and trained in mask making, with 300 masks then issued to workers’ families and the community with instructions for use, sanitisation and how to make more. While disposable masks are readily available for use by staff on site, the DIY-activity was undertaken to assist with the country’s capacity to meet mask supply needs and reduce the need for ongoing purchase of disposable masks by PNG residents. 07.01.2022 Congratulations to Queenslander Emma McCaughey for being selected to participate in the 2021 Roads Australia Fellowship program which matches industry ‘up and comers’ with senior leader mentors in the Australian infrastructure sector. It was both humbling and gratifying to be recognised within the company by being nominated and especially to be selected into such a highly regarded program. One-to-one advice about leadership development and career direction from an experienc...ed mentor will be exceptionally valuable for me. One of the things I want to get out of the Roads Australia Fellowship is to learn how to improve my own mentoring skills. I’ve found having a mentor or coach supporting me has assisted greatly and I want to return that favour to others within the industry. With 16 years’ experience delivering successful civil projects across Australia and the UK including rail infrastructure/protection, oil and gas, mining infrastructure, road construction and tunnels, Emma is currently working as a Bid Manager in CPB Contractors’ Queensland and Papua New Guinea pre-contracts team. 03.01.2022 In recognition of National Recycling Week (9-15 November) our team delivering Parramatta Light Rail has revealed their approach to recycling and reusing materials. More than 15,000 meters of single rail, 13,500 rail sleepers and 13,000 meters of overheard wires from the decommissioned T6 Carlingford Line are being recycled and reused to construct the Parramatta Light Rail. The recycled components will make up about 70% of the materials required to construct the new light rail and all the ballast recycled to be used throughout the Parramatta Light Rail build. Lessening the environmental impacts of our operations is an important priority for CPB Contractors as not only will it keep these materials out of landfill, it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the need for new materials.
