21.01.2022 Viral Outbreak Causing Contagious Cough in Dogs in the Central Highlands. The Maraboon Vet Surgery along with The Maraboon Pet Resort wish to inform the communi...ty that we are experiencing an outbreak of a contagious canine cough in our region currently. We recognised the first cases in late October, and are continuing to see a large number of cases in the Central Highlands region. This outbreak is also being experienced at other kennels and regions throughout different parts of Australia. Canine Cough, also known as infectious tracheobronchitis, is one of the most common respiratory diseases in dogs. It is an airborne virus and can travel large distances thus making it highly contagious and difficult to control. Dogs can become infected with Canine Cough wherever they gather, such as in parks, dog runs, obedience classes, dog shows or kennels. Even if your dog is vaccinated there is still some risk of infection. The only symptom should be a harsh hacking cough, which often finishes with gagging. Tracheobronchitis should be suspected when the characteristic cough suddenly develops; about 10 days after exposure from another susceptible or affected dog. Usually, the severity diminishes during the first 5 days, although the cough may persist for 10-20 days. As this is very similar to the common cold, 95% of cases we see do not need any treatment and the dogs recover within 3-10 days. Dogs will exhibit a harsh sounding cough which can cause discomfort for your pet. Unfortunately as with the common cold, it is difficult to avoid exposure to our pets as they play such an active part in our day to day lives. If you suspect your dog is affected, it is recommended that your dog be kept as quiet as possible, as undue stress or excitement can cause these symptoms to become worse. Urgent treatment is required if signs such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or greenish nasal discharge occurs and the cough persists. If these symptoms appear, organise a time to see your vet as soon as possible. Most vets will have contagious cough protocol when entering the clinic, so please be proactive at adhering to these procedures when visiting, to decrease the rate of transmission. No amount of supervision, sanitisation, or personalised care can prevent a dog from catching an airborne virus. It is recommended you take measures to avoid your pet socialising with any other pets if you would like to minimise your chances of your pet becoming infected. Unfortunately this is difficult leading up to the festive season with the increased amount of travelling. Unfortunately using boarding kennels presents a high risk of catching this virus due to the fact that most dogs do not show any symptoms while being boarded. This makes it very difficult to determine which dogs are contagious. As we have learned in 2020, viruses can be unpredictable and difficult to control even with dramatic measures. If you must board your pet during this busy season, please do not bring them to the resort if they are unwell. Similar to child care centres, you will be asked to pick up your pet if it is showing any signs of being unwell for the benefit of the other guests. There will be no exceptions. It is important to note that of the numerous patients exhibiting this current canine cough virus which have been tested, ALL returned negative results for all known infectious causes of Canine Cough. 8 dogs ALL tested negative for ALL 10 known infectious causes of Canine respiratory disease. To do our part in developing future preventions, we have passed this information onto universities, vaccine companies, a pathologist, and a virologist. We are working through the next steps with the above experts if the coughing continues in our community for an extended period of time. We predict it will continue for the next 2-3 months. These tests show that your vaccinations are effective for the typical canine cough viruses and the negative test results suggest this is a different viral pathogen. Unfortunately it is not just kennelling your dog that can put your pet at risk. Walking your dog, taking it to dog parks and social events are all high risk areas for this airborne virus. Using people to house sit your dogs, or using pet services poses its own separate risks and need to be weighed against the benefits of your dog being in a secured kennel during you absence. Pet sitting and house sitting also put your dogs at risk for this canine cough as people can be carriers of the viruses and can be potentially spreading it around the community as well. As mentioned above, the dogs spreading the virus are often not showing any signs at all while they are contagious, and symptoms develop several days after exposure. It is our recommendation that good hand hygiene and disinfection is our best option to help decrease this risk. We want to assure the community that we as a vet clinic and pet resort are working with experts to ensure we gain as much information as possible about this outbreak. The Maraboon Pet resort is always extremely diligent on ensuring all pets are fully vaccinated on arrival, no unwell pets are allowed to board at our facility, and increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols are in place. Note the cleaning and disinfecting protocols are always of the highest standards at our facility and we have additional staff working to complete extra sanitisation to ensure your pets are as safe as possible during their stay. If you have any concerns or questions we urge you to email [email protected]. And we will try to answer any questions you may have. We appreciate your time in reading this and once again, we can assure you that this is very similar to the common cold and that your dogs may develop a loud cough for 3-10 days. If this occurs we urge you to isolate your pet from other animals to decrease the chance of transmission. Medical treatment is unlikely to be required unless you have concerns that your pets are experiencing additional symptoms to the loud cough. Some dogs will cough and bring up a small amount of white foam, but if they are otherwise happy, eating and drinking normally, there is little concern. With all that being said, if you have any concerns and want your pet checked for your peace of mind, please call your regular vet to book in a standard consult. Note that standard fees do apply. Despite this currently being the most common cause of coughing in dogs, there are other medical conditions that cause coughing that may require medical treatment, so if you have any reason to be concerned, speak to your vet. We also urge anyone whose dog is coughing for longer than the typical 3-10 days to seek medical attention. Sincerely, Your devoted Animal Care Team Maraboon Veterinary Surgery & Maraboon Pet Resort.

20.01.2022 Sweet boy Boston is ready for his new home.

19.01.2022 Chloe is an amazing family member and a very loyal friend. We’ve had her for 8 years and I think she was one of the first CQ Pet Rescue dogs. At the time my husband was working away from home and I needed a companion. Someone to come home to each night. She has a very sweet nature and loves children. She has always enjoyed our grandchildren’s visits. She wants to be doing what ever they’re doing only she forgets she weighs more than them. When we decided to get a pet I’d th...ought of buying a pure bred dog but I really have a heart for the under dog so to speak and so decided to look at a rescue dog. We love hearing about the dogs adopted from the early days of CQPR and knowing beautiful girls like Chloe are living a great life. 7 and a half years in Maree also joined us as a foster Carer and helps out where she can. Thankyou for adopting and for all you do to help keep us going. #adoptdontshop #cqpetrescue #bullarabsofinstagram #rescuedog #rescuesaveslives

06.01.2022 We adopted Stirling about 2 years ago on Australia Day. He is a very easy going cat , who has no fear of dogs, he likes to come down the paddock to feed the chooks & horses. He likes to be with you but doesn’t need to sitting on you so we get along well. ... Stirling fits in well with our lifestyle as long as he’s fed on time all is good in the world, otherwise there is a bit of window tapping & screen door jumping. Thank you Belinda for adopting with cheeky handsom fellow! He sounds like he’s definitely lapping it up with you guys. #adoptdontshop #adoptionsuccess #catsofinstagram
