25.01.2022 The Portland Foreshore project and works update:

25.01.2022 GREAT WORK AND GREAT PEOPLE At the www.facebook.com/portlandses

25.01.2022 Small business will be vital to our economic recovery and you can do your part by choosing to #buylocal, #supportlocal to help them get through this period so we can #lovewherewelive. 98% of Australia's businesses are Small Business and employ around 6 million Australians.

24.01.2022 OPINION: HISTORY TELLS US WHAT TO EXPECT While not unexpected back at the beginning of the year, the so-called second wave of Covid19 and the eventual cases increasing in Glenelg Shire has been a blow to business nation-wide.... While some (including mine), absorbed some of the impact and downturn through restrictions, partial closures and the drop in consumer demand, now, the second wave and necessarily harder restrictions is going to hurt employers, businesses, staff and the shopping public. The public health and the ability of our health services are of critical importance. We know this, and while we mostly understand it’s going to hurt. Financially, emotionally and in every way. As a Shire resident, with a stake in the wellbeing of our community, as an employer, small business and now a councillor, my mission is to stand with the community and look for every way to survive and eventually thrive once more. We, as a community, have a tough road ahead. Cliché’s like it will get worse before it gets better sound trite and empty- but in fact, they came about through adversities in past health epidemics, recessions, depression and even the war years that some residents remember only too well. Other problems, opportunities and more challenges won’t just sit on hold. We will have good days and bad days. We need to be kind to one another check-in on people and follow the health guidelines to the letter. WHAT DO WE DO? Focus on health issues like Covid19, the precautions and tactics we will use to cope with the disease until science can offer lasting resistance or even a cure. Health comes first, because without stability in the health of the community everything else will seem like an almost impossible challenge. We must fight for the physical and mental health of every person in our community. THERE IS HOPE There is a tonne of work and a lot of sadness and hardship, but the prosperity of the community is in its people, and we can help each other, and we must. Communication, Patience, Community Spirit and a Sense of Humour will help us through. Everyone is affected. I will continue to look for opportunities and ideas to make a bad situation a little less so.

23.01.2022 LOVE YOUR LOCAL - small business recognition . IS there a small local business you would like to see recognised for its outstanding approach to innovating and c...ommunicating during the past six months? To celebrate Small Business month, The Portland Observer in conjunction with Committee For Portland and Portland Signworks want to recognise small businesses in Portland that have provided exceptional service during the pandemic, with a specific focus on those that have introduced innovative approaches to their business operations, and provided excellence in communication. The campaign is an opportunity for the public to show their appreciation for small local businesses who are doing an outstanding job given the current difficult times our community is experiencing. Members of the public are invited to nominate businesses for the Love Your Local campaign in three categories: retail sector; services and hospitality sector; and industry and trade sector. Each nominated business will receive a window display sticker, designed and produced by Portland Signworks. Following on from the eye-catching "Yes We Are Open" initiative by Portland Signworks in April, "Love Your Local" will feature a colourful window sticker to help the public easily see which bricks and mortar businesses are open. Winners in the three categories will be announced on September 18 and each will receive a gourmet hamper (and bragging rights). Nominations can be made via the form on this link: https://tinyurl.com/y6j6f8rv and email it to admin@committeefor portland.com.au or hand delivered to The Portland Observer, 47 Percy St. Nominations close Friday, September 11.
