25.01.2022 Theyre starting to catch crabs in the Mandurah estuary - the home of blue swimmers! Grab yourself a new drop net or two - we reckon ours are the best on the coast. The famous octagonal shape, with heavy-duty welded galvanised steel rings and premium sapphire netting...theyll last for ages. They come complete with a small EVA float to keep bridle ropes out of the way. Great value at $28 each. We also stock bait baskets, bait pockets and bait clips. Try attaching your bait to the underside of the net instead - some of the oldtimers swear by it! Chilli crab, anyone? (picture credit lifestylefood.com.au)

25.01.2022 The season is up and running - hopefully the crays are too - so from now until Christmas, Crackpots will be opening on Saturday mornings between 9am and noon. So if you're heading out on the water, come in and grab your bait, an extra pot or two, floats, ropes and anything else you need. We have plenty of brand new pots in stock and can rig them up while you wait - you'll find us at 59 Forsyth Street, O'Connor.

25.01.2022 We have posted this information before, but were reposting as there has been a fair amount of interest lately in gill nets (haul nets). Makes sense, as the still waters of autumn are perfect for gill fishing. The main question we are asked is, can the same size mesh be used to catch whiting and mullet? The short answer is no. Our experience suggests that in the south and lower SW coastal sections, a 2 mesh (the smallest legal size) is best for herring and whiting from the ...beach, while 2 to 2 works well for mullet. As you go further up the coast the choice of mesh sizes generally increases. From north of the metro area it seems that 2 is the preferred size for smaller species and 2 to 3 for mullet. From Geraldton upwards most fishermen go for 3 to 3 for eating fish, and 2 for bait fish. Whether you choose a single wing net (30m) or a double wing (60m) really depends on where you fish long shallow areas obviously suit the longer nets, while steeply shelving beaches favour the shorter nets. If youre after a gill net, we can take orders and payment over the phone, and arrange postage - weve just posted one gill net up to Beagle Bay! - or you can call in to our OConnor warehouse. We are still open regular hours with required hygiene and distancing. Enjoy your fishing safely. See more

25.01.2022 New arrival this morning! Truck loads of pots - come and get em! Thanks to Mark from Mandurah Craypots for burning the midnight oil to ensure we stay stocked up.

23.01.2022 The A to Z of anodes for your craypot ... aluminium or zinc? Most people have a preference, but for many recreational fishers that preference is based on the myth that because zinc anodes feel a lot heavier, they are therefore more effective. Not necessarily true - ali anodes are lighter, but that is actually one of several advantages they have over zinc. Obviously lighter anodes are easier to transport and handle, but and heres where it gets technical the electro chemic...al capacity of ali is around three times higher than of the same mass of zinc, which means you get longer protection for less bulk. Ali anodes also have a relatively high driving voltage, so it has better distribution of the electrical current, compared to zinc. Another advantage of ali is that it doesnt contain cadmium (zinc has a small amount) which is harmful to marine species. Also, ali anodes are significantly cheaper than zinc for the same electro chemical capacity. The bottom line is, though, that its a matter of choice a choice made easier when you have the facts! We stock both ali and zinc anodes at Crackpots, in a range of weights. http://www.crackpotsmarine.com.au/marine-hardware/ See more

23.01.2022 Do plastic pots catch? We get asked that a lot and the short answer is, yes they do. Its true that timber pots generally catch better than plastic, particularly when the plastic is new, but this difference diminishes over time. Were not completely sure why, but it seems that the longer you have a plastic pot, the more its been exposed to the elements, the better it catches. So the earlier you buy them, the better leave them in the sun or in the water for as long as yo...u can before you use them. People tell us they continue to catch better in second and subsequent seasons. Plastic pots are obviously easier to handle and lighter to pull, which makes them popular with older and younger crew and on smaller boats where space and stability are an issue. They dont rot, the teredo worm leaves them alone, theres no battens to replace at the end of the season and they still catch enough crays to make the trip worth it. They come with the three escape gaps and two bait baskets already installed, and we can rig them up for you with rope, float and ballast. Give us a call and we can rig them up for you, ready to go. If you want more proof, check out this video from our friends at Tuckeys Tackle in Mandurah! See more

22.01.2022 Heavy rain, big swells and strong winds are forecast for much of WA from Sunday, so make sure youve got everything tied down and moorings checked. Be a good time to bring the pots in before it hits and do any repairs.

22.01.2022 We reckon mullet is one of the most under-rated fish around, but were not sure why. An old fishermans wife told us how she cooks it, and we tried it with great success - it was delicious. Brush your butterflied fillet with olive oil, garlic and chilli then pop under the grill skin side up (or even better, skin side down on a pan over a fire on the beach!) til the skin is blistered and crispy. Throw on some parsley and lemon, and enjoy with a glass of your favourite vino. Si...mple and superb! Its a great time for catching mullet with a gill net; the autumn waters are warm and calm. We hear theres plenty of mullet around Geraldton way - if youre having success somewhere, let us know! We have plenty of our locally made gill nets in stock, different mesh sizes and either single wing (30m) for $160, or double (60m) for $320. Happy fishing! (Recipe pic from eatsmarter.com - we ate ours before we could take a photo...) See more

22.01.2022 Heading down south for the school holidays? Why not throw a few of our famous octagonal crab nets in with your fishing line - they dont take up much room :-) You can pick them up from our OConnor warehouse (59 Forsyth Street) or we can post them to you. We have plenty of occy shelter hides, gill nets and craypots too, including our easy-to-use plastic Katipo craypots. Happy holidays and fruitful fishing!

21.01.2022 The pros are telling us theyre starting to catch whites up around Two Rocks, so it looks like they could be starting to run. Its a bit early, but the recent heat could have kicked things off. Full moon is still a couple of weeks off. Its all speculation really but a good idea to have your pots ready and soaking. Remember were open on Saturday mornings between 9am and 12noon between now and Christmas - so come in and grab your bait for the weekend! Stocks vary from day to day, so give us a call to see what we have in the freezer. We sell by the box or by the kilo.

20.01.2022 We've unloaded another truckload of quality pots, and we're now open on Saturday mornings from 9am until 12noon, so come in and say g'day and grab your pots, bait, ropes, floats, bait baskets or whatever you need for a weekend's fishing. Buy a new pot and we'll even rig it for while you wait, complete with float ID. We've also got occy shelter pots, so why not drop a few of them while you're out on the water. Happy hunting!

19.01.2022 WINCHES - We are currently out of stock of Anchormax winches but new stock is on its way. We have been waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting for a shipment to arrive from the eastern states and have been assured it will arrive towards the end of the month. Best to give us a call beforehand to check they're in - they'll sell quickly, judging by the number of calls we're getting. We're OK for tippers, though. You can contact us on 9337 2211.

16.01.2022 We had a customer in this morning who called Crackpots crayfishing heaven. If you want to check out the biggest range of professionally made pots on the WA coast - pro and amateur, jarrah and jarrah/pine, plastic - plus a huge range of ropes and floats, gaps and gates, baskets and ballast, lids and lead, winches and tippers, shackles and thimbles, nails and staples, nets and needles - come and see us at crayfishing heaven! Plus of course our friendly helpful advice from decades of industry experience.

16.01.2022 Everybody seems to have a different view about what makes the best crayfish bait, and there's always a bit of contention on what to use. It should tell you something that by far the most popular crayfish bait are tuna heads, followed by Orange Roughy and then mackerel. Obviously, the choice of crayfish bait depends a lot on how long you go between pulls. Hoki, salmon and tuna heads will all out-perform mackerel or sardines during those long stretches, but a bit of oily fish s...eems to give great results in the short term. Consider a mix if you’re not sure. If you’re serious about catching crayfish - and who isn't - we also recommend changing your bait regularly the higher concentrations of fresh oil and blood work a lot better than some half-rotten bit that’s falling apart, and as the pros will tell you, if you’re competing with other fishermen good bait is a must. If you need bait, give us a call and see what we have in the freezer - cheaper by the 15kg or 20kg box, but we can also sell by the kilo. See more

14.01.2022 Days after a Geraldton commercial rock lobster fisherman was hit with millions of dollars in fines for overcatching, we hear of illegal catches of undersize blue manna in Mandurah. People are being caught, but are the fines enough of a deterrent? Call Fishwatch if you see anything on 1800 815 507.

13.01.2022 We are very fortunate in WA to be able to travel to spots like this and enjoy the freshest crayfish in town! Lobster Shack Cervantes

13.01.2022 Normally at this time of year wed be busy helping customers preparing to head off for an Easter road trip, with craypots, crab drop nets, gill/haul nets, occy hides and more walking out the door. 06.01.2022 There are plenty of reports of good occy catches up and down the coast this winter - one professional we spoke with said he hadnt moved his lines in five years and he was still catching the same amount, in waters just north of Perth. One fun fact we learned recently - wed assumed the occies we were catching were the Octopus tetricus, or gloomy octopus, but weve been reliably informed by FRDC (Fisheries Research) that our local occy is as yet unnamed - an application to name it is forthcoming, subject to taxonomy. So there you have it - our own Octopus anonymous! Any suggestions?? (photo: Wikipedia creative commons: Sylke Rohrlach)

06.01.2022 The world and the rules that govern it are changing at a rapid rate, often from hour to hour. Here at Crackpots we have decided to remain open for the foreseeable future, in the interests of our valued customers and employees. In order to keep staff on we will be running a skeleton roster, but be assured we are still able to meet your needs, and will of course be undertaking all relevant health precautions to ensure the wellbeing of our customers and staff. We are also happy to take orders over the phone and arrange delivery. There are still crayfish and crabs to be caught, and plenty of food to grow and harvest, so stay busy, be safe and keep well.

06.01.2022 More good news! The whites are on their way. Make sure your pots are ready and you've got plenty of bait - we're open Monday to Friday 8-4 and Saturdays 9-12.

04.01.2022 With the relaxation of restrictions, its time to get fishing again - and the current batch of autumn weather is perfect for dropping a pot, line or haul net. Crackpots Marine would like to thank all our valued clients and friends for their patience and valued support in tough times. This support has meant we have been able to keep the doors open, although we have all taken a reduction in pay and hours to do so, like so many others. But we are doing our best to keep business moving and look forward to getting back to some kind of normality. Keep safe - and keep fishing!

03.01.2022 Will this be the season for great cray catches in WA? No need for a crystal ball - Western Australia's Western Rock Lobster Fishery has been undergoing a long-term scientific program to predict catches up to four years in advance. Part of this is regularly sampling numbers of late larval-stage lobsters (puerulus) settling on inshore reefs along the west coast. In short, this puerulus settlement index shows a strong correlation with catches of lobsters three and four years later. The attached graph shows the highest levels of larval lobsters settling between Alkimos and Mentelle was three to four years ago. So do the maths - and happy hunting! http://www.fish.wa.gov.au///Puerulus-Settlement-Index.aspx

03.01.2022 Great news for fishers and crabbers in the Swan River! Were fully stocked up with our popular, quality octagonal crab drop nets, so get out there while this glorious winter sunshine lasts!

03.01.2022 Important information from Fisheries WA.

03.01.2022 Fisheries changed the rules last year to require any pot length of 20m or more to be weighted, and its a good idea - it keeps your ropes below water and out of the way of boat props, and it keeps the surface of the water safer for migrating whales. We offer two options - a length of weighted lead core rope spliced into your pot rope, or three lead weights lazy-spliced to the top third of your pot rope. We can do this for you when we rig your pot, or you can get your lead weights from us and do it yourself. https://www.fish.wa.gov.au//Changes-to-recreational-rock-l

02.01.2022 This will be our last post for 2020 - Crackpots will shut its doors on this very strange year at noon on Thursday December 24. After a short break to recharge the batteries, we will re-open on Monday 4 January 2021. In the meantime, the Crackpots Marine team wishes you a happy and harmonious Christmas and New Year, and many thanks for your interest and support throughout the year. Here's to a summer of fun fishing! (Garden Island photo credit: Anthony Nieves)

02.01.2022 Word is people are heading out en masse for road trips in WA, both north and south. How lucky are we to have a place like WA to explore! If youre heading up north for some fishing, grab a gill net and hit the warmer waters for a catch of mullet or whiting. If youre chasing bait fish (like small whole mullet) use a 2 9/16 or 2 mesh net, and if youre chasing good sized eating fish and youre north of Geraldton, you could go up to a 3 or 3 . If youre feeling really lucky and youre way up north, try one of our seriously large 4 1/2" nets (the biggest allowed) - good for your sea mullet and threadfin salmon. Weve got plenty in stock, ready to go - happy travels!

02.01.2022 Fisheries heavily regulated octopus trigger trap trial continues until March 31 this year, but there are very few restrictions on passive shelter pots, or hides. As long as they are not traps, dont contain bait or constrict the free movement of fish, you can drop as many as you like (but remember theres a daily bag limit of 15 octopus if fishing from a boat). Shelter pots can be made of anything: old ceramic sewer pipes work exceptionally well, especially if you drop them ...in the grungiest area around like sandy rubble or weedy areas where occi hunt for molluscs and crustaceans. If alternative hiding spots are hard to find, the occi will be more likely to climb into your shelter hide and settle in. The beauty of a shelter pot is you can leave them out there for a short time or a long time. Once the occi is happily ensconced inside, it will most probably stay there until the food is gone - or theyre kicked out by a bigger occi! Crackpots bespoke shelter pots are ready to go with ballast, snap hook and rope for $20; just add whatever main line and floats you need. Most people drop around five to ten, snap-hooked onto a long main line at 10m intervals, with a bit of ballast to anchor the rope prior to the surface marker at one end. Happy hunting!

02.01.2022 Need bait in a hurry? Our freezer is well stocked with 15kg and 20kg boxes of orange roughie, blue mack and hoki heads - ring us for a price. We also stock the award-winning, environmentally friendly Burley Bricks developed by Fremantles own Mendolia Seafoods with the help of Recfishwest. Were open Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm - and weve got plenty of craypots in stock too, so no excuses not to get out there!

02.01.2022 Winters over. Are you cray season ready? Heres a check list we can help you with. Pots - timber or plastic. Ropes. Floats. Baskets and lids. Anodes and gaps. Battens and bases. Winch. Tipper. Bait, an lots more, all in the one place at Crackpots Marine Supplies. Come and visit our OConnor warehouse, or give us a call and well be happy to help!
