12.01.2022 A sad day for Melbourne today with the passing of this Brunswick Street Icon. Grant was an absolute legend and if you've been to Brunswick Street, you've probab...ly met him. A couple of years ago he told me one of my favourite stories ever on the page, this is it. Rest In Peace mate... (Please read in a strong Scottish accent for the real experience) "My Name is Grant Alexander McCracken! In 1989 I was living in Long Beach, California. I had a gig on this one night at the 8121 Club, which was part of the Sunset Strip. My friend Mark and I had been drinking so neither of us can drive so my friend says I have a musician friend from Seattle who’s down and he has a car. So we go to his friend's place and as he opens the door a big whoosh of let’s say, funny smelling smoke comes pouring out the door. His friend welcomes us and we settle in for some good times. We were there for a while, and his friend plays a few songs on his old beat up acoustic guitar and then we headed to the club in his car. It was a classic, beautiful car. So we drive from Long Beach into the strip and as we’re barreling down this four lane highway at around 60 miles an hour (100kms/hr) an accident happens in front of us and we have to skid over 4 lanes! It was bloody scary but we just made it just. After gathering ourselves and settling down, we start driving again. Eventually, we get to the 8121 club and my new friend grabs me a whiskey to calm my nerves after the almost accident and because I was about to go on stage. I was performing poetry on stage that night. The set went really great and I was feeling good, considering the amount of whiskey I had consumed and the fact I had almost been in an accident, I was feeling great! My new friend came up to me and said he really liked my performance. I thanked him and introduced him to some Sydney Musicians from a band named Lubricated Goat. Lubricated Goat was a grunge band from Australia, kind of Australia’s answer to Nirvana Funnily enough, they seemed to get along very well. The rest of the night is a bit of a blur now and I can’t for the life of me remember how we got back to Long Beach because we were all wasted. I just remember waking up in the morning and thinking what a great f#$%!&g night So anyway, that guy that I met, the one who played the old acoustic guitar, that guy that I almost got into an accident with. The guy that said he liked my poetry and bought me a whiskey Well, you wouldn’t believe it, but that guy was Kurt Cobain." #Melbourneiloveyou
