06.01.2022 Dogon doors : Can you imagine that this intricate design is perfectly carved by hand, by the Dogon tribe in Mali North West African, to keep their grain ‘rooms’ safe. The grain ‘rooms’ are cut into the mountains in the Highlands, carrying the grain from the plains up to the storage rooms. The doors are to protect their precious grain harvest. The patterns carved are symbols of folklore held dear to the Dogon people. Truly works of art which takes time to prepare planks of timber (no hardware shops anywhere near here!) fix them together and start carving these magnificent doors. Sizes of the grain stores range from tiny 80x50 cm, or 1.4 x 70cm. Remember that the grain stores are hewn out holes in the mountains! Such a great skill to pass down from generation to generation. #community #sustainable #vintage
