23.01.2022 MAKER INSIGHT "Through my practice I keep circling back to the idea of returning, and surrendering materials. I deliberately choose materials for the existing narratives that they hold, and build upon these through making processes. I process tensions connected to land use and what I perceive as human heavy-handedness through the pieces that I make, each work consolidating a single thread of thought" Cara Johnson. 21.01.2022 MAKER INSIGHT "Mon Mungan (Healing Weave Mats) are used by Wurrit Badjur (medicine women) for healing others, reflection and as a teaching tool. Native grasses were used to create significant and powerful floor mats, surrounded with soft and nurturing Barramul (Emu) feathers for spiritual healing and connection. White ochre dust is sprinkled over the mats in a ceremony and smoked with lemon scented gum for cleansing to give the healing mat energy to pass on to the one who sit...s upon it. Healing mats can be adorned by magical feather flowers that represent women of country and connection to country. Native bird feathers were used in dance, ceremonies, adornments, healing, and medicine, and including them in the healing mat adds another dimension of healing; through brushing or moving the emu feathers the strength of the emu is felt - strong and resilient - while each feather allows for a soft, nurturing feeling of love and respect. The emu feathers are used as they are told to keep one protected as well as safe while travelling. To feel the empowerment of these mats you truly have to embrace them in your home, either a wall hanging feature or used as a special way to sit and feel beneath you. The mats awaken your Durn Durn (Mind), Darram (Body), Murrup (Spirit), Murrup (Soul). Sometimes you can hear the soft humming of song; when I create each mat I sing in my native wurrung (tongue) and the song is weaved into the mat." Cassie Leatham Cassie is from the Taungurung people from the Kulin Nation. She is an Indigenous artist, master weaver, traditional dancer, bushtukka woman and educator. She is passionate about teaching her skills to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students of all ages to learn and understand Aboriginal culture. 14.01.2022 MAKER INSIGHT Ian McKinnon uses symmetry and repetition in his woven pieces, of which have been influenced by a career spanning 35 years as a weaving technician, (Loom Tuner). His work uses the Macrogauze technique developed in the 1960's by Master weaver Peter Collingwood of the UK. Precise measurements and angles are used to produce a pleasing visual experience. Works are pre-planned on paper before being woven on a specially modified loom, which enables elements of the ...weave structure to move uninhibited, in contrast to conventional weaving methods. Ian uses colour, but more so the structure, to express this art form. Image: Ian McKinnon, @warpweave, available at Craft and part of our current exhibition 'Inside'. 13.01.2022 MAKER INSIGHT Kirsten Perry has a background in industrial design, gold & silversmithing and multimedia and is currently teaching at RMIT. Anthropomorphism and character design feature heavily in her work, and the small scale of her production allows her to explore variations on similar concepts. Known for exploring tensions between error, chance and humour through crafted sculpture and digital media, Perry's practice is a diverse one. Where culturally errors are discarded or... covered over, Perry's work challenges this aesthetic, highlighting and exaggerating them especially through her use of humour and contemporary text language. 04.01.2022 A gorgeous yet peculiar creature has found a foster home nestled amongst the abundance of handmade curiosities in the Ochre room of Craft Victoria's latest exhibition 'Inside'. First brought to life by Melbourne-based artist Troy Emery, the creature would make the perfect companion for an extravagant yet busy craft aficionado. Troy Emery has an art practice encompassing sculpture, painting, and drawing. Emery works primarily with textiles in a sculptural practice to produce ...animal-like forms. His creations examine the discourse surrounding the delineation between fine arts and craft, as well as animals as both entrenched decorative motifs and tokens of ecological ruination. Troy’s work is held in various private and public collections, including The National Gallery of Victoria, Art Bank Australia Collection, City of Townsville Art Collection, Goulburn Regional Art Gallery Collection, Deakin Art Museum, and Macquarie University Art Gallery. 01.01.2022 VIVIANITE A collaboration installation by Clare Scanlan of Scanlan & Makers and Jordan Wood, Vivianite is the departure point for a range of enquiries into materials, including bespoke paint finishes, ceramics and collage. Vivianite is a rare blue pigment historically used in paint production. Also known as blue ochre, it is a native Victorian pigment found at Demon’s Bluff, Anglesea. Conjuring allusions as macabre as they are beautiful, vivianite occurs inside fossils, bone...s, shells, even decaying corpses. It starts life colourless, darkening to shades varying from green to blue to black upon exposure to oxygen and light. Scanlan will delve into this spectrum, expertly blending vivianite and layered handmade finishes to the surfaces of a warehouse. Wood’s ceramic forms echo the spaces in which vivianite is found as well as functioning as vessels to contain Scanlan's pigments. Her textile collages evoke the landscapes and colours of the sites where the mineral occurs. This project merges age-old paint-crafting and glazing techniques with contemporary chemistry to develop new products that focus on environmental and bodily wellbeing. Presented by @scanlanandmakers & @jordan.l.wood 17 - 21 October. Virtual opening event: Saturday 17th October 2020, 2pm - 4pm.
