22.01.2022 Getting into flow early in the day

18.01.2022 People have chosen their career and so you would expect them to enjoy their work. If this is true, then how come so few people are in flow at work? You have already experienced flow - Everyone has. It happens regularly as children engrossed in an interesting activity, and even as adults, whenever you are so engrossed in something that time passes without you realising it, you are in flow. The trick to getting in flow is to make sure that the conditions are right. Look at you...r own work situation. Do you have clear goals for this task that are not in conflict with other goals? Will you get feedback on how you are doing while you are doing it? Is the work a good match for your skill level? Is it easy to focus, or are there continuous distractions and interruptions? Do you feel in control of what is going on? Do you lose a sense of yourself, or are you worried about what others may think? If any of this stuff is missing, then you cant expect to get into flow, much less stay there. When you are in flow, whatever you are doing doesnt feel like work, or a chore. The experience is addictive, your productivity increases, and the task feels highly pleasurable. Because it is so enjoyable, you do it more frequently, and so you get better at it, doing it faster, more efficiently, which in turn makes it even more enjoyable. Flow is a closed loop system. The only time this begins to degrade is when your skills improve to the point where the work becomes boring, in which case you need to find ways to make it more interesting or challenging if you want to enter the flow-state while doing that particular task. As a team leader, you are in a unique position to infuse your team with enthusiasm and energy, help them become more productive and find more joy in their work. All it takes is some tweaking of the environment and a little teaching about what flow is and how to enter that state. Organisations keep measuring "engagement". If your team members are all in Flow, it is guaranteed that they will be engaged. If you want to get the most out of your people in the workplace, then you need to learn to recognise when they are in a state of flow, so you know whether to guide and give advice, or remain silent and allow the individuals flow state to continue.
