13.01.2022 Been seeing a hell of a lot of this lately, this is what happens when flexible pointing is applied on bedding that hasn’t dried properly. A lot of the jobs we’ve repaired are roofs only 10-12 years old and done by qualified tilers. One was 2 years old. Some are jobs by unqualified restorers with poor trowel skills.

12.01.2022 Some examples of how not to repair bedding and pointing of tiled roofs. Over bedding where too much mortar under ridge capping and in valleys will suck water in and if it’s close or over the gap in tiles where they are cut it will leak onto the ceiling etc. poor trowel skills, using cement mortar instead of flexible pointing, not enough cement in bedding. Applying flexible pointing on wet mortar instead of dry bedding. These are common mistakes by untrained, unqualified resto...rers and why you should check potential restorers credentials and check references and previous jobs. Get it right the first time by engaging qualified and skilled tradesmen and save yourself the pain of having to spend thousands of dollars fixing up things that should have been done properly the first time. You get what you pay for and if there are large differences in pricing and one quote is significantly cheaper and there’s usually a reason why and it’s usually they aren’t doing the same quality of job, only repointing a roof that needs total rebedding, not replacing valleys when required, not sealing the roof properly prior to painting, using cheap paint and other materials, not applying coatings properly or enough paint. Not using safety rails, harnesses and proper OHS procedures, having adequate insurance, workcover, public liability and product insurance etc.There’s so many variables so do your due homework and use reputable, qualified, honest and transparent companies and you can’t go wrong. 10.01.2022 Classic over bedding, no wonder it leaks. Excess mortar overhanging the edge of the tile and valleys is a guaranteed leak. Concrete is porous and will suck water in even with flexible pointing over it. That’s why on Top ridge on cement tiles and cut down Terra Cotta top course tiles, you need weep holes and why we don’t bed and point valleys. Use qualified trades people, you get what you pay for.
