12.01.2022 Ramp Maintenance Done Before Long Weekend In preparation for the long weekend sand maintenance has taken place at the Dundee ramp overnight and has improve...d the usability of the ramp. The photo posted shows the ramp at 9:20 today (Fri) with a tide height of 3.3M (while this is an improvement we think fishers should be mindful they will need at least 3.3-3.5M to safely launch and retrieve unassisted this weekend). Please check the tides and plan accordingly. We have also been informed by NTG that a tractor will be on hand to assist with launch and retrieval during daylight hours, if needed. Further ramp cleaning may have taken place this weekend from 10PM to 4AM (ideal low tides) however this would have caused noise and light pollution for the many campers and holidaymakers and is not appropriate to be scheduled for such a peak time. Getting away for a fish and camping trip, also means getting some rest and relaxation! Maintenance should resume next week, with a major sand removal planned for early July and this should restore usability to at least 2.5M. It is no secret that the Dundee Ramp we now have, is not quite the Dundee Ramp we all hoped for (and were promised way back in 2015/16). AFANT have reported maintenance needs to NTG, reported user needs to consultants and have sought updates which we have communicated to fishers, however after the issues faced on the last set of weekend neaps, we have stepped up our involvement even more and NTG have responded positively. After consulting with fishers, local businesses, FTO's and sand removal experts, last week our President and CEO met with the Minister for Infrastructure the Hon Eva Lawler and the Minster for Fisheries the Hon Paul Kirby. We raised the issues with ongoing maintenance and (not for the first time) ramp design, and noted the complexities too. Discussions with the Ministers were positive and aimed at improving the ramp usability over the short, medium and long term. We pressed the need to ensure that the ramp is as ready as it can be for weekend visitors, especially on neaps when the low coincides with favoured launch times (eg. dawn on a Saturday). AFANT also proposed that a Dundee Boat Ramp Working Group be formed. We proposed that AFANT, DPIR (Fisheries), DIPL (Infrastructure), local Dundee business, Dundee Progress Association, and the NTGFIA (fishing guides) be included on the working group. That the group must be provided with all of the relevant reports and information, and that the group be tasked to report directly back to both Ministers on short, medium and long term options to improve the Dundee Ramp. We were pleased to receive a positive verbal response from both Ministers, and we expect this to proceed. We look forward to reporting back on a formal follow up on this request soon. We thank the Dundee community, especially Doug and staff at the Lodge, Ministers, NTG - DPIR/DIPL for engaging constructively and getting some of the built up sand cleared to improve launching this weekend. This is a good, welcome start, but there is more do, so watch this space! Have a great long weekend!

04.01.2022 Point Stuart Fishing Access Update: Today NT Minister for Fisheries Paul Kirby: Member for Port Darwin shared the good news that DIPL has released a tender for ...the design, investigation and documentation for the upgrade and partial realignment of the access road to the Point Stuart boat ramp. This project aims to deliver better public access to one of the best kept fishing secrets, only a couple of hours drive from Darwin. AFANT have been an active proponent of this project since 2017 and have been working away behind the scenes, keeping it on the agenda and ensuring it keeps progressing. Following three years of ongoing communication with Terry Holtz from Stuart's Tree Fishing Camp, NT Fisheries, DIPL and multiple meetings with the relevant Ministers, we are thrilled to see the project progress to this next important stage. Once completed, the project will improve access to the waters of Finke Bay and Chambers Bay, providing an alternative access point to areas such as, Love Creek, Carmor Creek and the Wildman River, there are excellent reefs in the area and it is an ideal spot to launch for a longer range adventure. It is envisaged that this will also alleviate some demand on the boat ramp at Shady Camp. In line with the NT Government’s $50 Million election commitment to invest in recreational fishing infrastructure, this project will encompass the upgrade of approximately 29 km of Point Stuart Road access track to public road standards which will improve road trafficability and safety of road users.
