21.01.2022 Happy Monday! Just a quick reminder to our families that we have the StEPS Vision Screening happening at our centre from 9.30am-11.30am, this Thursday 19th November. If your child is 4 or over and you would like to them to receive a free vision screening (no eye drops used) then please ask one of our staff members for a consent form and ensure you bring it back by Thursday. This is a free, NSW Health Initiative. See below information about the program and as always, if you ha...ve any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch. The Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening (StEPS) Program is an initiative of the NSW Dept. of Health and offers all 4 year old children a free vision screening assessment. It is highly recommended that all children ages 4 and upward participate in the vision screening program as many vision problems remain undetected unless a child is screened by a trained professional. The StEPS program will be coming out to the centre next Thursday 19th November for a 2 hour period (9.30am-11.30am). Each screening will take approximately 10 minutes per child and will be performed by specialist StEPS Program staff employed by Nepean Blue Mountain Local Health District. Your child's vision will be screened one eye at a time and no drops will be used. All parents/carers of children screened will be informed of the results of the vision screening assessment and these results are confidential. If you would like your child to receive a free vision screening assessment then please ask Louise for a consent form, which can be collected in person at the centre. For more information on the program please copy & paste the following link in your web browser: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//Publicat/steps-brochure.pdf Thank you, The CCPS Team.

A big thank you for all you do and a special mention to The Bloom Room Richmond for always delivering such gorgeous arrangements.

06.01.2022 We say no to drugs As part of our Child Protection Week Campaign, we wanted to make our mark on our stance on drugs. As childcare Educators, we work with the most vulnerable group within society. As a service, we are currently working with members of parliament to change legislation to mandate all Early Childhood Educators to be randomly drug tested and for the legislation to reflect a zero tolerance to drugs. ... Its not a matter of if but when people take drugs, it has catastrophic and often irreversible affects on a persons life including: - Damaging the structure of the brain. - Increased stress on the cardiovascular system. - Impair the brain for longer than the high lasts and can impair for days during the come down. - Induce psychosis, schizophrenia and other mental illness. - Is highly addictive and can permanently damage the brain after one single use. We are in a trusted position with the care of your babies and we stand firm on our position and we say no to drugs. There is a great need in our community for: - Education - Prevention - Intervention - Rehabilitation - An opening for conversation around drugs and how to get help. As we do for the children, we want to be able to help members of the community and if you or someone you know is struggling with a drug addiction or abuse of drugs and alcohol, please reach out and we can help you with referral. When little lives depend on us to keep them safe, we need to be trustworthy, honest and have great integrity in our work. We are committed to providing care and intervention to children and families of the community and with that, comes a responsibility to make a stand on such an important topic like the one we have raised today.

03.01.2022 This is a little bit what Friday night Occupational Therapy and Educator brain storming sessions look like. Watch this space... we have something super exciting coming to the Educator space!

03.01.2022 Story shared with parent permission Miss Z featured in these photos is 2 years and 11 months old. Apart from being inquisitive, caring, kind and a force to be reckoned with when her older sibling is around, Miss Z has a diagnosis of Verbal Dyspraxia and mild whole body Dyspraxia. Typically by now, Miss Z should be using words, small sentences and be able to express herself using her words. Until this little one tries to speak, you would never know she has a diagnosed dis...ability because this little champion understands every word said, follows instructions and is incredibly independent. So what is Dyspraxia? Dyspraxia is a disorder of movement and coordination in which messages sent from the brain to the muscles are interrupted. It is often identified in early childhood, but can also come on later in life after an illness or an injury. Typically in other settings Miss Z may fall under the radar however we work really hard at finding ways for children like Miss Z to express herself other than using her words when she feels she needs to have some time out. For children who have a disability, communicating, managing their regulation and keeping it together can be really tricky. We have had an OT and Psychologist coming to the centre for quite some time now but as part of the Mamalove Program and the extensive experience of our Educational leader, we are quite skilled at splitting up our day to give children just like Miss Z the perfect opportunity to thrive but catering to their individual needs. So what does Miss Zs day look like? - Joining in to the inclusive program. - Daily one on one therapy practice with staff. These are strategies and goals put in place collaborately by our mini multi disciplinary team with our OT, Psych, Ed leader, Parents and Mamalove Coordinator. - OT. One per week. - Psychology ( when needed). - Break out time to create and communicate in other ways than using words. We are so grateful to be able to cater for children like Miss Z. All of these additional services are free of charge to parents and are paid for by the Mamalove Connect program. Inclusion, intervention and Intergration are the three Is we pride ourselves on at Cranebrook Community Preschool. Thank you to children like Miss Z who help us grow as Educators and as a service every single day. #dyspraxia #dyspraxiaawareness #inclusion #cranebrookcommunitypreschool #additionalneedsmatter #changinglives

02.01.2022 Prevention, intervention & supporting families We live in a space where services are often implemented as a reactive approach to long term challenges. As part of our own services values, we like to look at prevention, intervention and supporting families for the safety and well being of children. ... So what does this look like for us as educators? Prevention We prevent by anticipating and assessing risk. We know that many families have stressors in their life from time to time such as finances, mental health, disabilities, caring roles for not only their children but older parents or grandparents, blended and separated families. Prevention for us as a service looks like: - Conversation. - Keeping communication open with families. - Recognising the signs of parents who are under stress. - Identifying the risk factors early. Intervention Intervention are ways we can help families through challenging times as part of our centres service. Intervention at our Preschool isnt just for the children, it is for the whole family and we encourage a holistic approach so that everyone feels supported. How do we provide intervention? - Referrals. - In house allied health services at the Preschool such as Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Counselling. - Assistance with food, shelter and housing. - Help with parenting strategies from our therapists who also train the team on a case by case basis. Supporting families in aid of child protection is part of our role. We all undertake compulsory child protection training on a yearly basis and we are here to not only support families with prevention and intervention but to guide and empower families. Many parents lack confidence and are often hard of themselves. We love to see happy and confident parents because this aides children to also feel happy and confident. If you are having a hard time and need assistance, please dont hesitate to call, email or send us a message through FB.

01.01.2022 A very special thank you to Kerri-Anne and Scotia for preparing this important Message Thursday 10th September 2020 | R U OK? Day is a national day of action, dedicated to inspiring all people of all backgrounds to regularly ask each other 'Are you OK?' R U OK? aims to prevent suicide by encouraging Australians to connect with someone they care about and help stop little problems turning into big ones.... You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener. Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life: 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen 3. Encourage action 4. Check in This practice of normalising asking if someone is okay and listening and supporting when someone confides in you, helps reduce stresses and anxieties people face every day. Providing support to those around you within your household, workplace, and community helps form a sense of connection and understanding. Mental health is critical to our overall health and well-being. But people have differing levels of resilience and response to life struggles. Asking someone R U OK shows our support for each other and strengthens our connection to each other. Simply asking R U OK may make all the difference in someones life. We can not always know the impact we have on anothers life or the way caring can help others. Take time today to ask someone R U O K ans while you are there ask yourself, R U OK? Its so important, especially in our current times to check in with those around us, as we are facing such an unknown and stressful time. On behalf of all the team at CCPS, R U OK?

01.01.2022 Each Wednesday evening the team come together to learn, share, discuss ideas and explore new ways to support the children, families and one another. This evening some of the team members had a turn at training the other staff in our in house policies. In particular, the social media policy, accident/injury/trauma, administering of medication and emergency evacuation policy. We ran through strategies and case management plans for children requiring additional support and ide...as on how staff support each other throughout the day. We also talked about the book the Rainbow fish and how Miss Kerri-Anne once write to the author to discuss questions from the children. We would love to include families on the topics we cover in our team meetings to give you a little insight as to what the team get you to in order to provide a personalised care and education plan for each child. This week we shared pizza together and we were excited to meet our new personal trainer Claire who will be coming along three afternoons per week to train group PT with the team.
