21.01.2022 Communications operators of WICEN NSW, a specialist communications squad of the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. receive the NSW Bushfire Emergency Citatio...n. Over 30 WICEN NSW VRA volunteers have been awarded the citation for their dedication to service over the 2019-2020 bushfire emergency. During the Black Summer of October 2019 to February 2020, WICEN NSW members served as radio operators and Incident Management Team staff in RFS Fire Control Centres across NSW, and as operators on the NSW Bushfire Information Line at RFS HQ in Sydney. A WICEN NSW task force established and maintained an emergency radio network for government recovery services in the Bega area after the local communications infrastructure had been destroyed. Other WICEN NSW members served continuously every day across this period in administrative and management support of the broader NSW VRA response. The NSW Bushfire Emergency Citation recognises the sustained commitment and dedication of the WICEN NSW VRA volunteers to public service throughout this unprecedented crisis. #vrarescue

18.01.2022 Strictly Ham Stage 4 Lockdown As announced today, Melbourne heads into stricter stage 4 lock-down with nearly all businesses to close for 6 weeks, this decision... also effects the way Strictly Ham is allowed to trade. As of 11:59pm Wednesday August 5th Strictly Ham will be forced to close the retail side of the business, this means no in-store traffic. I would like to point out that although the retail side of the business is closed during this time, the online side of the business will still be functional and operational 100% Also during this time I would like to inform everyone that phone support will be limited due to the increase expected with online orders and email support. If in doubt about stock levels at the moment I would suggest a quick email to ask if the item you are interested in is in stock and available, delays in production, international freight and demand for product is making it extremely hard to keep up with supply Everyone, please take care in these troubled times.

12.01.2022 ACMA announces shake-up to callsigns - Bye bye 7 letter calls The following was taken from the WIA website as an indication of changes: Changes to call signs We are making changes that will facilitate access to a wider range of digital modes for foundation licensees, and provide a ‘call sign for life’ for all licensees by: allowing all amateurs to obtain a 3 letter call sign... removing the association between call sign suffixes and qualifications. If you have a foundation, standard or advanced licence, you can apply to the AMC for any available 3 letter call sign. If you have already upgraded your 4 letter Foundation callsign to a 3 letter callsign, you can keep it if you are upgrading your qualification to Standard or Advanced. However, if you have a Foundation 4 letter call sign (Fxxx) you will be required to change your call sign if you upgrade to Standard or Advanced. Two-letter call signs remain available to advanced licensees only. Call signs and state/territory identifiers Call signs traditionally indicated the state or territory where an amateur residesfor example, VK3 indicates that the licensee resides in Victoria. Applying for new call signs If you’re applying for a new call sign, you’ll continue to be issued with a call sign that indicates your state or territory of residence. Moving interstate or changing location It has been long-standing operational policy that amateurs moving interstate must get a new call sign. However, it is no longer a requirement to get a new call sign when you move interstate, although you can get one if you wish. Under the LCD, if you’re going to operate an amateur station at a different location for a continuous period longer than 4 months (or 7 days for a repeater or beacon), you should ask the ACMA to consider varying the licence to change the location. For more information see the following https://www.acma.gov.au/changes-amateur-radio-call-sign-pol

08.01.2022 RD Contest 2020 Remembrance Day is uniquely Australian, created to remember and commemorate those who sacrificed lives, or their youth, in order that we can live in a free democracy. Especially, of course, those holding amateur radio licences. The Remembrance Day contest is designed to encourage friendly participation and help improve the operating skills of participants. It is held on the weekend closest to the 15th August, the date on which hostilities ceased in the southwe...st Pacific area. It was created as a competition between states so that everyone can be involved. The noise and activity is our tribute to the servicemen. It is a friendly contest with many just getting on to give out a few numbers and reconnect with old friends. Remembrance day is the amateur radio equivalent of Anzac Day and as such should be the primary activity on the bands open within Australia on that special day making way only for any emergency traffic. A perpetual trophy is awarded annually to the Australian state or territory with the best performance. The name of the winning State or Territory is inscribed on the trophy, and that State or Territory then holds the trophy for 12 months. The winning State or Territory is also given a certificate, as are leading entrants. NB Changes to the rules for 2020 include no multi-op stations, for more see https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/rdcontest/

01.01.2022 Ruby Boye WW2 radio operator at Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands Calling Mrs Boye on Vanikoro. So began a message from Japanese forces to Ruby Boye in 1942. What followed was a terse and direct threat for Ruby to discontinue her operations. Over the course of World War II, Ruby Boye operated the radio at Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands as Australia’s only female coastwatcher. Her service warranted a personal visit to Vanikoro by Fleet Admiral William F. Bull Halsey Jr, USN...Continue reading
