25.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who attended our Honey Hackathon for 2019! A special thank you to Mike Borowiec from Bee Firm, Jackie Ho from Yanchep Beach Joint Venture and UWA PhD student Kenneth Ho. The day was inspiring with all the collaboration and great ideas. It started with success stories from last year and ended with completely different product ideas. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for these start ups!

25.01.2022 Join us at our Monthly Bee Talk! This months talk is on "Mapping Flora to Honey" presented by A/Prof Bryan Boruff from the University of Western Australia. Over the past two years, together Bryan and Manita have been gathering all the honey bee flora data on the south-west of Western Australia they can find and in-putting it into a GIS-based database. Why is this so important to beekeepers and honey packers, and for our food security?... Where: Yanchep Institute, 128 Yanchep Beach Road, Yanchep When: Monday 10:30am, 9th of March Click on this link for event information and to get a free ticket: https://www.facebook.com/events/646996222786636/ Tickets are free but you are welcome to donate to Hive Aid (Beekeeper drought and bushfire relief) via the Eventbrite link found on the event page. Next months talk on the 6th of April will be on "The Science Behind the Art of Bee Monitoring." presented by UWA PhD student Omar Anwar... more details will be released soon!

24.01.2022 At last its out!

20.01.2022 If you are coming along to this years Honey Hackathon (Here is the event link: bit.ly/2GlgZbi ) you will be expecting these two guest speakers at our event - Mi...chael Borowiec, Brand Management Director and Edward Owen, Director of Bee Firm NRG - natural honey drinks. When Director of Bee Firm NRG, Edward Owen was out racing his Jet Boat in competition down at Baldivis, he noticed the alarming amount of energy drinks, sports drinks and soft drinks that were being consumed. Not only were these drinks full of processed sugars and artificial caffeines, they were also being consumed by children, adolescents and adults alike. The idea was born to create a drink that got rid of the nasties and could be consumed by athletes, sport minded people and the general punter. Utilising West Australian Red Gum Honey, Bee Firm NRG produced a natural honey drink and added Gubinge/Kakadu Plum and Ginseng. The result was a refreshing, tasty beverage that has been sold across the state, is making in-roads into the overseas market and best of all is West Australian. Brand Development Manager Michael Borowiec has developed marketing strategies and built a brand around Bee Firm NRG where they are recognised throughout the Honey Industry in Western Australia, across different supermarket and beverage retail chains and are starting to make an impact with the larger beverage companies. A highlight for the team was winning the 2018 Department of Primary Industries Regional Development Economic Development Award for their utilisation of regional ingredients such as Darling Range Honey and Kimberley Gubinge/Kakadu Plum. In two short years their drink has been sold through over 300 venues including The Westin Hotel, Cocos Restaurant, Parliament House and for the stargazers up at the Perth Observatory. With a presence at last years Collaborative Research Centre for Honey Bee Products Honey Hackathon as a guest speaker and as a judge, Michael is looking forward to again being a part of the Hackathon Team.

16.01.2022 This year's Honey Bee Hackathon was exceptional thanks to the incredible attendees! Lots of great ideas were shared across these two days, ideas that we hope will develop into new businesses. A special congratulations to Rhonda Flottmann for taking home the prize! Keep an eye out for more exciting events in the future.

16.01.2022 What a difference a Christmas break can make. The Australian bush is still burning and that is the fodder for our honey bees to prepare for food pollination services. Last year we did a study on the impact of fire in WA on honey production (and bush pollination) and it was devastating. The aspect we were following up on through beekeeper diaries was the rate of bush recovery - different fire intensities and species make-up. The biggest problem is species change.

16.01.2022 History shows that we even had a spiritual connection with bees! Very interesting read.

13.01.2022 World Bee Day celebrated by Australian researchers The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Honey Bee Products, which works to sustain and improve Australias honey bees, is celebrating World Bee Day (20th May). Since starting in late 2017, the CRC had attracted more than sixty researchers from a diverse range of scientific, arts and engineering fields to focus on the honey bee. This is not surprising as due to their combined effect on ensuring pollination services, the valu...e of managed and wild honey bees to the agricultural and horticultural industries in Australia is estimated at $14.2 billion. Work focused on honey bee health and honey bee products allows the industry to better understand and promote the benefits and the quality of local honeys, said CRC for Honey Bee Products CEO Liz Barbour. The CRC for Honey Bee Products has created a Geographic Information System database of honey bees favourite flora, tracked the timely production of nectar and pollen for their sustenance and equated the value of each floral zone for honey production, Dr Barbour explained. This is helping provide knowledge for a growing industry and allows them to harness crucial bee foraging resources. While Australia is known for its peroxide-bioactive Eucalypt honeys, amongst the flora the CRC genetically-defined as bioactive, it is Leptospermum species that can produce the highest-grade Manuka honey. Protecting the integrity of local honey products is also important, particularly in export markets. Australia-wide, the honey bee industry has its own quality assurance system, B-QUAL and the CRC partnership will provide the digital platform so that honey bee product traceability from our wild forests to customer can be assured, continued Dr Barbour. Australia is the lucky country for honey bee health and the CRC is aiming to keep it this way. The CRC is also developing a new set of tools including real-time disease detection and long-range electronic monitoring as well as building the immunity-defence of our bees and malnutrition detection to avoid colony collapse. With more than 30 projects running in the CRC it is an exciting place to bee. See more
